At the risk of incurring Gremmi's wrath, what the hell is 'going yellow on teams' and why should anyone care?

Obviously, only if you work from home, and not kicking back in a silk dressing gown reading a book in the office. Hey! That was only the once!

At the risk of incurring Gremmi's wrath, what the hell is 'going yellow on teams' and why should anyone care? it's taken to mean you are inactive at your computer/away from your computer. Dossing essentially. It's not looked at in the public service section where I work, but in another department it's kept track and you have to account for the time you've spent away from keyboard. It's ridiculous. As long as the work is done, it shouldn't matter than Busty Fingerton was inactive on Teams between 11:05 and 11:19 this morning.

At the risk of incurring Gremmi's wrath, what the hell is 'going yellow on teams' and why should anyone care? Teams will turn from green "available" to yellow "away" if there's no activity detected And some companies will monitor how much time is spent "away" and use this as an indicator of not working. You can become "away" even if your watching training videos or watching presentations though, so it's highly ineffective. Even taking those into account it's highly ineffective. It's a measure of presenteeism, not productivity.

Dr Hickman explained it much better, and without including 'Busty Fingerton'.
Go with his explanation!

Could someone please tell me what is Geefe? Or a way to search for the answer on an internet browser?

Could someone please tell me what is Geefe? Or a way to search for the answer on an internet browser? I believe Geefe is a form of quantum physics that is AND isn't a music journalist/surveyor/teacher/gigolo/astronaut/Prime Minister of England.

Jeez. That sucks. I'm glad (a) we don't use Teams, and (b) my company doesn't pull any of that shit. What happens if you are thinking? Or going to the bathroom? Or talking to someone at the next desk?

Or talking to someone at the next desk? Some companies are even worse. Some companies will screenshot your screen periodically, will actively monitor key presses. I think it's more common in the US as it gets very invasion-of-privacy-ish but some companies will use the work laptop camera to make sure colleague are there - doubt they'd monitor it constantly but might do spot checks. My current place don't do any of that, or even the teams monitoring, but it happens. If my place introduced stricter teams monitoring I'd be looking for a new job asap.

We had an earlier form of it in the Civil Service when our office got folded into Child Benefit and we had to use a program which kept track of what we were doing and we had to give explanations as to why weren't available after a certain amount of time. Fuck I don't miss that level of micromanagement.

I literally couldn't work like that. It's bad enough now that they're asking us to log hours in the office, but at least I can use that to build flexitime credit. It's patently absurd given that they expect us to be on call at all times so not being in the office is no indication that you're not working, and vice versa, rather the opposite, so as said previously it's just presenteeist bollocks. But micro-surveillance, I couldn't be dealing with that. I can't think of a way to sweeten that to keep me in such a place. Absolutely fuck that.

Yeah, we would see a lot more malicious compliance. E.g. I would definitely not work more than my 7 hours and 12 minutes a day that I am contracted to do.

I've been monitored, micromanaged and all the shite for years and like otto says, absolutely fuck that. It's definitely not for everyone and a hateful environment. Unfortunately most people put up with it, because it's a job and leaving and doing something else is harder for them than simply putting up with it.
A good mate I drink with tried all the corporate lark years ago when he was younger, and simply couldn't deal with the bullshit authority. It's like he physically couldn't comply!
He's one of the most intelligent and worldly wise people I know and he just said, fuck this, and went self employed. Been doing it for 25 years now.
He physically cringes when I tell him about corporate and how they treat you and can't even comprehend most of it.
My current job has got its issues, but thank fuck I'm not doing corporate anymore. Life is definitely way too short for that shash.

I’m keen to log what’s going on with mine. Every so often I see some flash of activity on the screen and it’s quite distracting. Thought it was just Teams redrawing my status from “Busy” to “Away” (grass cunt software), but I think it’s something else. The joys of a Jamf managed Mac.

Fuck I don't miss that level of micromanagement. I had something similar in my first job at the job centre. Had to input how many people I'd signed on, interviewed etc. Just made it up. Ideal when you had a full day of interviews booked and you whipped through them in 5 mins each. I didn't take the job very seriously.

As shit as it is, we did have to get rid of a contractor who wasn't pulling his weight, and being constantly yellow on teams just added to the case for getting rid of the chancer. Pretty sure he had another side gig on the go (or was just utterly useless) It's not something I'd ever consider looking at as a first point of call, but if you're already suspicious someone is doing fuck all, then I can see how it can be a helpful indicator.
Like others have said, if you're doing the work that's required of you then it shouldn't be something to worry about. I can spend a big chunk of my day reproducing an issue in my home lab and not touching my work machine, as it's often a hell of a lot easier and quicker than any of our test environments at work.

Had a new boss in a previous job who came in and wanted everyone to itemise on a spreadsheet what they had done during the last 15 minutes, every 15 minutes.
Didn't last very long.

Would the itemization include filling in the itemization spreadsheet?

Mental. Treat people like adults and for the most part you will be repaid in spades. You get the occasional piss taker of course but the good outweighs it by far ime.

Don't you just love those types of bosses who come in trying to make a big splash with something completely untenable and unrealistic all in order of justifying their existence and ultimately it goes down like a fart in a lift.

Mental. Treat people like adults and for the most part you will be repaid in spades. You get the occasional piss taker of course but the good outweighs it by far ime. 100% this. We thankfully have a decent flexible policy and it largely comes down to "you're an adult, manage your workload" and as long as you attend client calls, show your face online during core hours and get your work done then when you do that is up to you. No reason to tell someone if you're picking the kids up, going off for an appointment etc (unless it requires rescheduling a call) because we're all adults. As you say Dougs, this goes a long way to ensuring people don't take the piss. The other thing I have always ensured as a manager in whatever area I've worked is a simple one but I think carries a lot of weight with people; don't ask them to do something you wouldn't do yourself.

I've got a role open for a Junior Analyst that has somehow led to me becoming a careers advisor with dozens of people asking 'I'm really interested in this role and would like to know more about how to get into cyber security'. That government advert really worked.

I’m hoping it’s good. I really want to diversify this team away from everyone looking like me on a teams call.
