The manager should have privately told him to pack it in. Humiliating him in front of everyone is never going to end well.

That was the ‘let them fight’ gif but apparently I can’t remember how to manually post images.

I've been putting off posting in here for a while, conceivably it could also go in the mental health thread, but it's definitely work related. Things have been pretty shit at work for a while:
- Last year our growing, happy team was unceremoniously slashed in half, with half being shunted off to another part of the company against their will. On a human level this was shit (although the alternative was probably redundancy), most of them were junior and I was their line-manager, so had to deal with them being incredibly upset. That's another story, but they were dumped into a very bad situation. It was sad and draining, and still is. Those left in the original team felt bereft and aggrieved. - Then our team lead left, siting stress and burnout caused by the rug being pulled from under her. That left a massive hole which is yet to be officially filled, obviously I'm largely picking up the slack, but nominally someone from outside the team is 'overseeing us'. - This new overlord knows nothing about us or our situation and offers no positive support. Instead he basically derides us for not being profitable. - We were always split between internal development projects that improved efficiency etc and external fee earning projects we piggybacked onto. But now we are not allowed to work on anything except fee earning work, which doesn't exist, so most of us are not actually doing very much. Ironically we worked largely in automation which freed us up to do more dev work, but now we have nothing to do! - Company have decided to cancel the visa sponsorship of one of our grads, with zero consultation. They haven't even formally let her know, but she heard on the grapevine, I didn't even know. She is distraught. - Company 'by mistake' promoted 2 people in the team but gave them no extra money and then 3 weeks later tried to go back on the promotion, they are distraught.
I could honestly go on, this has all happened in the space of less than 12 months, and up to that point we were extremely happy and growing team with a clear vision. Now, we're decimated and depressed!
Personally I have to bear the brunt of most of this, every day is fight after fight and bullshit, and as a result I think I'm experiencing burn-out: I have zero motivation, tasks are taking me forever, I don't want to speak to anyone, and I'm basically depressed, it is literally impossible for me to mask my contempt at this point and it's heart-breaking.
I have a meeting with the new guy about why our utilisation has tanked, and I'm honestly feeling like I'll crack and murder him.
I know, I should leave. And I do look constantly. I find CV writing, applications incredibly hard, largely because I've become so insecure over my skills, which I think is classic imposter syndrome. On the other hand I've been here a while and quite fancy the redundancy pay!
Sorry for the wall of text, needed to vent.

Vent away, that's what this thread is for.
Some of us here have aready been through the burnout and being signed off sick, so try and get ahead of that and do what you can to deal with it before the worst happens. Easier said than done I know, but try and take time to focus on your stress levels, speak to someone, embrace hobbies etc, just don't let work life get in the of actual life. Because that shit can have a serious impact on you (speaking as someone who had both mental and physical symptoms from my burnout).

It's a very real thing and causes massive problems long term.

Recent promotion cycle at my company, far too many employees put forward for an unspecified amount of promotions to the next step in title and now we're all having to deal with a massive fallout. About 5% of applicants will get promoted, the salary bumps this year are small (but hey it's better than nothing) and coupled with a RTO policy about to kick in I think we're going to see a mass exodus of staff (we're an agency, so it will impact client work).
I've had the pleasure today of telling one of my reports (who is fucking exceptional) that they got the highest ranking they could get but still won't get promoted...so hard to have that conversation. Especially when the salary bump they get will only cover the extra travel costs because of the mandated return to office. AAAargh.
I've also had to apply for an exemption to my contracted location of work because even though our company never mandated working in an office so everyone could work from home when they wwanted nobody was given a remote contract (even though I'm 200 miles away from the nearest office). Therefore technically I have a contract that makes me office bound. The joys of being acquired by a fucking massive global company. All the promises that it wouldn't change our culture have been forcefully thrown out of the fucking window.
Fun and games.

My place is about to mandate 3 days in the office each week because HR said so.
No one in our office works with each other, we all do different work with people on other sites which has always been email and phone. But sure we’ll all go sit in an office and make it harder to do those meetings because others are on their calls sat next to us.
Days in will have to be pre agreed and recorded on the system, the manager has to review each week. Someone has a lot of free time for this admin.
It’s worked fine as is for the last 4 years.

A lot of this comes down to justifying the extortionate amount of rent that is being paid to lease massive, empty buildings that have years to run the lease.

Ours owns one site and has a lease on another that doesn’t have enough space for the people there if everyone was in 3 days. The other site got rid of a load of parking.
A lot for us is the manufacturing people don’t like the office workers being able to do it. It’s always a fight for the worst option for everyone.

I for one can't wait until they inevitably mandate more days for us. Means I can spend even more time not being able to concentrate on my work because people are spending half an hour wittering on about American football and other inane bollocks...
I came close to just putting noise cancelling headphones on with nothing playing.

Small victory for me at work
Last year I got given this responsibility as the fuckwit that looked after at didn't want to do certain tasks, I was told I can improve it but at every turn almost, he and his manager have just ignored me and sabotaged any changes (also his hand over and support is shite)
With the new manager on the team, he is looking to improve it or they can take it all back, early days yet as lot of internal bullshit.
this guy that had the task, really is useless turd, he just likes to keep stuff as it, when the company is very hot on process improvements (even spoke to this business change manager who organised a process and she ending up talking over me and dismissed everything I said then ignored my request on teams for the next schedule!)

Post my situation where I thought I had to change my hours, we've had 3 people leave the company from our team. 2 of them had literally been trained up for 3 months and then they've binned it. I think a lot of promises about pay/hours have not been honoured so they walked.
The company are also asking us to work at least 1 Friday a month in the office, as they notice that not a lot of people come in on Fridays when it's a mandatory 2 days a week in the office scenario. You give people a choice, and you live with the consequences.
For now, I am just keeping my head down, ride it out and hopefully get on the Financial Crime ladder soon enough.

If I have to go in 3 days it’ll be Monday, Wednesday and Friday. No one is in two of those days and it cuts 15 minutes off my drive each way (time I would otherwise be working for free for them).

I went to the office for the first time in a couple of months today. Sat in my booth and did my work all day and didn't really talk to anyone.
Until the drinking party in the evening, which was good fun and I actually talked with people.
Moral of the story: If you want people to come in to the office, provide free beer and snacks.

If I have to go in 3 days it’ll be Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That's what I do also -even though our mandate is to be in office twice a week- as I really could use getting out of the house/walking to work, because WFH means I sit down at 930 and get up at 1930 with lunch taken at my desk...

Maybe you are looking at the wrong side! Please elaborate dear Frog. This is an internal role within the FC team, I've got a shadowing role with them next month so I just want to impress and put a good shift in should any future openings arise

I'm sure the day will eventually come where we have to go into the office more often but it is still very much personal choice. I last went into Leeds in November and I think it was June before that.
I try to avoid it as much as possible because I utterly despise sitting in a load of traffic for an hour (or 2) for the privilege of sitting in an office where people 'network' aka chat shit. I've only been in about 5 times since I started there and I hardly do anything on those days.

Reviewing stuff at the moment. Yesterday spent 45 minutes trying to work out the general location of some 19th century boundary from a ye olde timey written description. Turned over the page and there was a map.
I need a holiday.
