Do you guys actually have a HR department? If so they need to be shot into the sun and replaced with human beings.
What the actual fuck?!

I once saw someone go to them and complain about the Ops Director, five minutes later the complainant was in the office with the Ops Director in a one to one. HR in any company isn't your friend.

I did once and then came back a couple of years ago when the new job turned out to be even worse.
There's some incredible people here and lifelong friends but they're all one level below Director level. Director's are all in their 60s so I'm just trying to wait it out and wait for the decent staff to get bumped up a level and really bring the company back on track. I go back and forth weekly as to whether I can last.
I said interior fit-out to keep a vague sense of anonimity but the honest answer is what we produce is incredibly niche - there's only one other company in the country and they're located in Southampton whereas I'm from (and work in) South Yorkshire. Have a wedding to pay for next year and need a decent wage to afford it which would be hard to find if I left.
So yeah, it's a real shitshow all round.

Getting a new line manager soon and in the past I have been lucky, but have concerns who they get next. My current manager is fairly good, has 1 annoying fault but gives me a lot space and does not micro manage me

My brother in law is head developer in HR (or something) at Edinburgh uni. He's a decent chap and works extremely hard. He did make the national news that time their new system he'd been leading development of forgot to pay anyone. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd1p32pd90po

I'm currently battling HR on two fronts.
1) they mistakenly promoted 2 people in my team, didn't give them a pay rise, and then three weeks later tried to renege on the promotions, obviously after they'd been announced. Now they are straight-up lying to the 2 people in question about the reasons for no pay rise (basically blaming them for not quite performing to the required level).
2) another member of my team is in limbo as she has no idea whether the company are going to sponsor her visa, which runs out at the end of the year. She's been told by a director that they are not, and that HR told him ages ago, but they are refusing to answer my or her questions on the subject, offering no reason or even a straight definitive answer!
On both fronts I have valued junior members of staff that are having their lives fucked with for no reason other than wild incompetence and dishonesty on the part of the HR department. Just last year they forgot to pay me my bonus and it took six months to get them to actually sort it out. They are wankers.

Nothing like a rollercoaster of emotions. Asked to join an audit, for an annoyed customer... oh shit. Then have the pre-meeting, and I'm not required. Phew.

HR where I work renamed themself as "people" just call yourself "soulless corporate enforcers"
The senior manager doing interviews told me all of yesterday's interview people where a bit crap (didn't say that exactly) Shame I don't have product management experience or line management experience, not sure I would want the job right now as there is turd that floated to the top and she is awful to deal with and has no idea what the fuck is going on (the liz truss of products)

Whilst HR aren't your friends, a decent HR department is still a very useful tool.
Doesn't always work out that this way, but in principle a good HR department will listen to and take action against anything that could damage the company, both legally and reputationally,
I often see comments on Reddit saying "noo don't speak to HR to report a manager doing something actually irresponsible or illegal" but that's bullshit.
HR won't help you because they're your friend, but they would seek to stop anything that might harm the company, either now or in the future.
Again, that's if they're doing their jobs right, but like any department in most business nobody really knows what's going on.

Self-indulgent pathetic whine incoming, so apologies.
Went into the office to do the mandatory office time. Guy next to me was complaining how he'd had the flu recently, but he was still audibly bunged up and was coughing and blowing his nose every 10 minutes.
Already felt pretty disengaged, so I just went back home during my lunch break.
I've actually gone from enjoying going into the offic, to not minding going into the office, to actually finding it a massive chore and ball ache. There's zero reason for me to be there, this talk of "in the moment collaboration" bollocks our execs and senior leaders prattle on about just doesn't happen in my experience.
It just feels really lonely. I'm quite happy working by myself, being by myself, but being in an office full of people and not really feeling like there's any connection with anyone feels awful, much worse than just being sat by myself.
And feel very disengaged. I like having tasks to do but at the moment it's just a lot of waiting around, lot of trying to answer emails about things I only have vague ideas about. So I'm probably barely doing anything most of the day.
I don't mind not doing much, but it's the anxiety that somebody will realise I'm not doing much thats annoying me.
And just starting to find the way things are structured a mess.
I'd likely feel this way in any job though.

Man the last few pages of this thread are mental. :-)
Meanwhile in unemployment land. Had a good interview on Monday, just received an invite for a follow up interview next week.
Had an HR screening call on Tuesday. Awaiting a call back tomorrow to find out if they want to do an in person interview.
Had a 1st interview today, which went well.
Have a 1st interview next Wednesday through a recruitment agency. The recruiter warned me that the company's maximum budget for that job is a bit lower than what I was looking for. It'd be a 22% pay cut compared to my last job.
There's a few resumes sent it where I haven't heard back yet.
Fun times. I just hope one of these leads to an actual job offer this time.
Good luck to all fellow job hunters!

Dhhickman, it sounds very much to me that you're in a job you do not like or you wouldn't be disengaged so much. That was one of the things I had to put up in PM jobs.
And I can tell you that changing career immediately got rid of that, so I'd also wager you'd be better off doing something else tbh.

Yeah I should find something else but I can't think of anything I actually want to do.
Anyway
Our canteen at work is getting rid of toast in the morning, which is just daft. It also basically gets rid of one of the things I liked about going into the office, could get toast and poached eggs for a reasonable price from the self selection breakfast counter.
But soon, no toast. And no self selection, instead they offer pre-prepared full English breakfast pots (their description) or pre-prepared wrapped sandwiches.
I just want fucking eggs you daft bastards.
(This is very first-world problems I admit)

Get out of there and do something different. Doesn't matter what it is as long as the bills are paid!

I've meant to post previously on this but work often gets in the way Good luck Quadfather with the new job, there was an article on Radio 4 this week about storage being a booming industry right now. Let me know if you want me to dig out the Sounds link. I'm nearly 3 years into my new career and it has been transformative. A decade ago I was sat at my desk shaking with fear and alcoholism, wondering if I'd ever get out of sales. It did take some time and major changes like getting clean and moving back to my home town but now I'm a clean cut driver working for a major Bus company. I do love it. YMMV though. I'm in a small northern city with a big university bolted on the side. The hours can be extreme but the job is mostly fun and thrilling at times. I'm out on the road most of the day, almost captain of my own ship. Passengers tend to treat me with respect and are happy to see me. It's a nice combination of being outdoors but sat down in my cab looking at it all. One downside perhaps, is depot culture. There's maybe 200 drivers there, 95% male perhaps. So a mixture of alphas, bullies and general cunts. But also some thoroughly good people who I count as friends. With the shift patterns though you can go weeks at a time without running into either. So glad I did it, would recommend and good luck again to everyone. Don't let the bastards drag you down.

So glad to read that Trafford. I think it was about 10 years ago when we all met up in Manchester wasn't it?
Great stuff about the job. It makes a huge difference doesn't it when you finally take the first step to get away from a shitty career and start living a bit more!
You have some twats in the depot and I have just swept a yard and mopped the toilets. But there's no stress is there, that's the beauty of it.
No sales, no pressure, no managers being cunts. None of that anymore

There is a caveat to my rose tinted report. Because I enjoy the work and find it exillerating, my workaholic tendencies have come to the fore. I do overtime most weeks on top of a basic 4 day/40 hour contract. This I think cost me a two year relationship last September and my social life now is nothing to write home about.
