If it was occasionally, then that's probably ok, but constantly probably gets a bit wearing in a professional situation. One needs to avoid becoming...

It's lame. We're not in school anymore.
Someone in work called me by my last name once and I told them in no uncertain terms to call me by my first name or add a Mr in front of it.
No one's ever done it again, but I'm a joyless cunt. Maybe that's my nickname behind my back, but as long as they don't call me that to my face 😏

I can't remember a person's name without giving them a nickname. Mine was due to a head injury and I just don't remember good without making an additional connection. I don't call people by their nicknames though as the whole point is to help me remember their actual name. Maybe they do it for a memory issue of their own,I mean if the names aren't offensive then it's not being done just to be a dick.

One of my mates at uni, when we first met, he'd insist on calling everyone "cunty" in his broad west country accent because he couldn't be arsed to remember people's names. Obviously being 18, we turned that around and it became his nickname for the first term or so. We soon stopped using it when we realised that yelling "Oi, Cunty, get some bog roll will you" across a shop probably wasn't ideal.
Even nearly 30 years later, one of the guys we went to Uni with insists on using it when we see or talk about him. Was mildly amusing as a kid, less so as middle aged men.

New director is a monster. Two decent managers have resigned this week because of the director being, basically, an abusive cunt, with more senior staff rumoured to be looking elsewhere too. Director got their job because they're an old mate of our DCE.
Prognosis not good.

Since I stepped up to a management role, in the last few months I've had members of the public call me every name under the sun, had things thrown at me, been promised a social media and newspaper campaign of vitriol against me more than once, been challenged to a fight in the car park, and had a bloke full-throat screaming in my face.
All of these things have been because I've declined to authorise refunds for perfectly legitimate reasons, and very rarely have any of these been over a matter of more than a fiver.

After 6 years at my current gig I am currently winding down and have “stepped back” until the end of Feb when I officially leave. So not doing anything really and have stopped being involved in anything forward looking as there is no point.
After end of Feb I am taking at least 6 months completely off to focus on dog walking, cycling, the odd run and my MAME cabinet. I am also considering never going back to tech and doing a full and complete job change thing for 2024.
To say I am looking forward to it would be an understatement!

Youthist My redundancy from the IT industry came at the end of 2014. I took around half the next year off (friends here who remember my fivefold bereavement will recall how grateful I am for those months). Then, one final IT job, which I left in summer 2017 for a completely new career, and I have never looked back. The very best of luck to you.

I did the 6 months off thing after some severe burnout and it was fucking ace. Especially summer in the garden (practically lived in our hammock for a couple of weeks!)
Highly recommended.
@blue_Mike what the fuck is wrong with people? Younger me probably would've put up with that, but I think I'd snap and headbutt someone these days. Probably a good thing I'm not customer facing!

"HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW I SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE RECEIPT, I'M NOW GOING TO GET IN YOUR PERSONAL SPACE AND REPEATEDLY SCREAM AT YOU THAT MY MOTHER IS EIGHTY FOUR YEARS OF AGE AS IF THIS IS SOMEHOW RELEVANT TO THIS SITUATION" You in retail Mike? Are there blades for sale? Indeed, and yes. Thankfully we have adequate security for knives and other sharp things. As if the threat of violent attack by bastards wasn't enough to keep us vigilant, the thought of the undercover trading standards people giving us unlimited fines and potential prison sentences for selling a blade to an underage person is enough to give you an itchy arse every time someone wanders down that aisle. Unrelated, I miss my forklift driving days. I was quite content doing that.

I don't miss retail and its daily reminder of how incredibly horrible people can be without any real justification. And that's before factoring the hours, pay and conditions in.
The customer is not always right, they are frequently wrong and often utter fucking morons.

I’m haven’t worked in retail since I was at college. But some of the abuse you see being thrown at people these days is awful. I remember going into a burger place, after quite a heavy afternoon on the beer, and a few scrotes were really abusing the staff. Getting fed up with it I asked them to pack it in. They said, “Why? They can’t do anything.” In my slurring voice I point out that I could. They fucked off.
Felt really cool about that, until I left and there they were, with about half a dozen mates. Head down, I scarpered.

If enough of our customers would learn to fucking read, or just open their fucking eyes and connect the dots between what they came in for and the shelf that's right ahead of them at fucking eye level, we could probably reduce our staff wage budget by half, because the assistance just wouldn't be needed any more.

My workplace is shafting me. It's one of the few IT departments that don't allow people to work from home because...fuck you that's why. When dad passed away last year I had asked them if I could at least work 2 days a work from home to be there for mum, who has pretty bad social anxiety and she's elderly so she needs a bit of help around the house, getting medication and is a familiar presence around the house so she doesn't feel too alone. Works for me too, I save some money on travel and at the end of the day work is still being done and I can show for it, plus the majority of the week is spent in the office anyway. Well now my manager told me that HR have been asking about me and it feels like they're gonna take that away from me as they seemed to believe it was on a temporary basis. To make things doubly confusing, the developers are allowed to work from home, but no other team can, I'm one of the few outside that managed it. So it's created this weird dichotomy betwen development and other teams where they seem to get away with it when other teams cannot. I have asked to speak to the person above us who asked my manager this and written out my case on paper so there is at least some paper trail. I'm hoping these bastards just forgot or didn't even care enough to listen first time and realise their mistake, they don't even realise or care that 2 people in our team have already left for this very reason that they couldn't WFH, they don't realise they're driving decent people away and preventing others from wanting to join. Think I'll be talking to him tomorrow, it's just annoying. I'm perfectly fine with the setup, not like I was asking for the whole week, it's just seemingly taken away for no reason. Little loyalty shown to someone that's been there for 6 years and puts in additional hours to get projects over the line.

Having to do my yearly objectives and development goals, my manager gave some very valid feedback that it was very transactional, and that I need to highlight how my work will feed into the organisations goals and objectives.
But it's transactional because it is transactional. I turn up and work and you pay me. Beyond that I don't really care.
Not sure I can really be arsed with the corporate world anymore. No real desire to rise further in the ranks at all.

It's that thing where employers seem to believe that your reason for living should be your devotion to the job where for most people it's a means to end and with thay it's a sliding scale of how much you actually enjoy what you do anyway. Of course it's transactional you're not going to do something out of good nature, but I guess it's a way for people higher up than you to justify their existence in their role.

No real desire to rise further in the ranks at all. I'm in a similar predicament, although I'm reasonably good at pretending to care. Have worked for bigger and bigger corporations over the years and I just do not, and have never cared about what I do at all! I enjoy the team, and theoretically enjoy the work, but all the corporate bullshit is soul destroying. Constantly having to work on things you have no interest in but still have to sell to clients etc. As such I went part-time which is great, but you take a huge hit on salary. I'm desperate to leave, but at a complete loss what to do. I don't want to work for a corporation, I don't really want to work in an office full stop! I've looked for jobs that would use my skills but potentially be nicer, but in some cases I'd be taking a 50% pay cut, which is impossible. Feel a bit trapped to be honest. I've definitely soft-quit or whatever it's called.

Case in point: for 6 months before xmas I was working exclusively on a project which was won by someone who almost immediately left. It was interesting but we had no experience and I felt that we had effectively lied to get it. The client had no idea what they wanted either and there were so many technical problems that I was completely unable to deliver what I planned to. The whole thing was a complete shit show but somehow indicative of the way it is. It wrapped at xmas and since then I've basically felt shell-shocked and unable to really get into anything at all. Despite client saying they're happy and even giving us more work.
To make it worse the Corp are for some reason touting what i did as some miracle product, so they're selling it to other clients, and I have to present it all over the place, despite nothing actually existing!
I've said over and over again that it needs a ton of R&D behind it but no one cares. In the scheme of things its a drop in the ocean but for me personally its shit.

I work in recruitment and an currently on a community call where the focus is on career. Ugh... You can always resign. For example I recently gave my notice in and will be leaving at the end of the school year because I wasn't personally feeling fulfilled or invested as I used to be. Obviously it also means onto another country and all that entails but I learnt that when you have that feeling of unrest and non fulfilment you need to make a change. There's no way I'm going back to that negative, pessimistic Jambo. That guy's a dick.
