God, even just thinking about Tyrion's "durrrr, my famously-trustworthy sister will totally get on our side if we show her a live zombie!" plan is making me annoyed.
AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN NEED HER IN THE END

They didn't no, and also when it looked like lots of goodies died at Winterfell, it turned out that not many died at all. So the threat that was teased since the opening scene of S1 E1 amounted to fuck all in the end. How nice.

The real threat was the friends we made along the way

Still, I maintain the best thing about Game of Thrones is the title sequence and theme.

I didn't necessarily mind that as a sort of misdirect, "Oh you thought the ice zombies were the threat? NO IT'S THE DRAGON LADY" But yeah, having them all over and done with in the space of an episode felt a bit weird. Like Nick alluded to before, the last two seasons had the feel of a uni student suddenly realising his half-finished essay is due tomorrow.

Considering I actually quite liked the whole build up episode they did prior. I genuinely thought that we were going to lose a lot more of the main cast than we did. Was very disappointing.

Cersei was done dirty in the last season or two. I don't know if her screen time is documented anywhere, but she is barely in the show from what I can remember. She was the main cunt of the show, she was on the Throne, but she barely featured or did anything. Was the actress still getting the 100k an episode or whatever it was??
My main issue is probably 'Winter is Coming'. From the very first season, this was a driving factor in the show. It was meant to be the big bad, the apocalypse, etc. Well winter did come, and it was a damp fart. Was certainly the shortest Winter I've ever seen. The scariest baddie in all of Westeros and beyond, defeated by a kid who got fucked up by another small girl a season or two ago.... Trash.

Didn't the show runners decide that they just had had enough and wanted it over and done with whereas HBO would have given them more time? Sure I read that.

Yeah, they wanted to get away from it to work on Star Wars IIRC.

I mean... they could have maybe just handed it off to someone else for a season or two? Either way it felt rushed.

Agree on the build up. First 2 episodes of season 8 were genuinely very good and a return to form (or, at least, a return to post season 4 quality). Those episodes are the main reason why I would rate season 8 above 7. And, yes, HBO wanted more. I believe they offered them an extra 2 seasons to conclude it. Not sure if they were full length seasons or also shorter ones like 7 and 8. Either way, I'm sure it would have been better as a result of more time.

She was the main cunt of the show, she was on the Throne, but she barely featured or did anything. Was the actress still getting the 100k an episode or whatever it was?? Because the writers didn't know what to do with her character. Same with Jamie. Same with Varys. Same with Littlefinger. Same with Bronn etc etc. One of my favourite moments of lazy writing is that those ballistas could pinpoint a bolt through a dragons head mid flight thousands of meters away and create this huge defeat for Dany that you wonder how it can be defeated. A threat that D&D literally said "Well Dany kind of forgot about the Iron Fleet". Despite being warned in the previous scene. And when she goes back for the rematch...there's no winning strategy? No trick. It's pretty much the same confrontation except we find the ballistas can't turn around? And seemingly can't aim anymore because it's convenient. I thought I was over how bad the show turned into but I'm still mad lol

I think Littlefinger was a more interesting character in the books because he's written in a way that you, the reader, can tell he's a slimeball who's up to no good because you see his interactions with everyone else. But the characters themselves aren't actually generally aware of how much a slimeball he is, which makes it a bit more logical when someone trusts him or buys into one of his schemes.
In the show he's just kind of openly machiavellian to the extent it's kind of weird he wasn't executed decades previously.

It'll be weekly. Starts on Monday and last episode is out 24/10.
I'll just start watching it mid October.

After the crushing disappointment of Thrones, I don't know if I can bother myself with investing my time into this, but it looks pretty sumptuous so fuck it, here goes.

I'm quite looking forward to this and I feel it has a better chance of being good than the Lord of the Rings show. I suspect the knives will be out for it though, both from "fans" and the media willing it to fail.
Currently over in LA, so won't get to see it until I'm back next week.
Happened to go to LA's Natural History museum today and they randomly had a very small exhibition for House of the Dragon. It was quite a strange thing to find in a natural history museum. It featured about 3 random costumes (may or may not have been mock ups), a few dragon eggs (ditto), a dragon saddle, a dragon skull, a video of GRRM giving a Westeros history lesson and about a 10 minute queue to have photo sitting on something that definitely wasn't the actually used Iron Throne. All quite odd.

Well. Nothing plot spoilery, just thoughts, but I don't want to colour anyone's first watch. The wigs are not the best, everyone just looks like they've got unhealthily over-peroxided hair. Matt Smith's direction must have gone along the lines of "be a swaggering, smug twat", and that sure was a lot of tedious exposition about people you know nothing about. Early Thrones was the same for me in that regard. Most of the episode is exposition really, but there are some getting to know you scenes with the three main players to get the swing of them.
Overall, I think it lacked the writing, especially regarding the dialogue which had a realistic, or at least thoughtful edge to it in early Thrones, but at least it's maintaining a certain continuity with the universe that helps with placing it within your existing head canon.
Still, it's a beginning. The actors don't inhabit their characters yet, which is always a stumbling block for a while. Ultimately it might not hit the same kind of highs as Thrones managed, but god knows it can't possibly hit the same lows. First episodes suck for just about every show though, so I'll keep an open mind. I feel like it has some potential but it's got some big shoes to fill. Big shoes that trod in a big pile of shit along the way.

If I wasn't looking at the screen I would think Ramsey was on screen whenever Matt Smith talks. Still episode was fine enough my issues are its based on one of the more boring families for me. Give me wolves over dragons any day which actually look a bit of a downgrade over the ones in Thrones.
Feel it's going to be a slow burner.

The first few EPs are supposed to be a bit slower, it's meant to start picking up a bit in 4-6. Nobody has seen past that to know how it is after that though.

Enjoyed that. Felt like slipping on a comfortable pair of old bloody socks. Liked the focus on the more enjoyable aspect of GoT, with all the politicking and sleazy back stabbery. Just a shame all that winter nonsense cropped up right at the end. All in all a decent start though.

I also felt like the seven kingdoms felt more "grand", in comparison it's now obvious that it was near the end of the road in GoT with the kingslaying etc having weakend the great houses and the whole system. Like comparing Ceasar/Augustus' Rome with Caligula's.
Rhaenyra feels like a Daenerys/Arya mash up, so will be interesting to see if she is a better written character than either
I also hope that they really have some good Littlefinger style court intrigue going (bit like the recent series Versailles)

Wow this is painfully average, some good casting and great set design mind.

I'm not sure I can be arsed to watch another show about who gets to sit on the most uncomfortable chair in TV. I'll give it an episode or two more but it'll need to do something more than repeating itself.
