There was a Sonic Direct just finished. It featured a bit several minutes long where Robotnik interrupted the stream, did a long rap, then made a giant moustache Sonic from Lego. It was quite something.

A New Game+ means I might go for another run of this. Really enjoyed it first time, it'll be fun to go through it again powered up from the start and perhaps go hard mode this time.

Annoyingly, even though I've finished Frontiers I have to do it again to unlock New Game+ as my save is set before the final battles.

The GameGear ones were never good. I had them at the time because if you had a GameGear, you absolutely wanted to play Sonic on the go. they were bad then. I think people asked for them out of nostalgia alone. The good Sonic portable titles were the Advance and Rush games on GBA and DS. i want a Sonic Spinball return |

Whilst the Game Gear version were better known, honestly the Master System versions (which were basically identical, but with a wider view) were better. The 1st boss on Sonic 2 made sense because you could actually see the fucking bombs drop.

I remember having Sonic Chaos on Game Gear and really liking it as a kid. Very much on the easy side, but think I played it quite a few times. Might have actually been the only Sonic game I owned at the time, although I definitely played some of the others.

I had Sonic 1, 2 and Chaos for Master System and love them all but it looks like Sega has largely memoryholed the system so I guess this is as good as we’ll get for the 8-bit titles

Found this comparison video, it's easy to see just how less visibility the GG version gave.
I was considering getting the DLC but because Sega have just half arsed it (again) and have really basic emulation of the GG titles and ignored the objectively better MS versions (presumably because they couldn't bothered having to come up with a MS emulator for the sake of three titles), I think I'll pass. Might just find an emulator and play that instead.

I only hada game gear when I was a kid and never realised that the view was so much wider on the MS.
Mental they haven't gone with that version for the DLC. Think I'll go with an emulator aswell tbh.

If it was the Master System ones I'd more interested in buying it cheap as it's version of Sonic 1 is the best Sonic game. Jungle Zone theme is still hummed by me today and I still can't pass the first rope bridge without timing my jump and pausing to make a smiley face.

I bet this is a decision based entirely on the US market, where the Master System did so badly, it’s almost completely forgotten. They didn’t even see releases for most Master System games over there. It was probably easier to market the bundle by advertising the game gear games.
No reason they couldn’t have had both versions though.

I knew the GG was more zoomed in that MS but didn’t realise it was that bad. Some of the bosses must be basically impossible, you’d never see the attacks coming. Can you do Anniversary Mode infinite lives etc on the GG titles like you could with MD ones in the original release? The first GG sonic was decent, 2 was very strangely designed. Triple Trouble was ok - never really liked Chaos. The rest are best avoided.
Mean Bean Machine was a decent Puyo Puyo reskin, but if you can beat the computer AI about five levels in you’re some kind of machinegod.
Still Not sure why anyone would want to play the GG titles over the 16bit games or more recent titles outside of passing curiosity. As far as bonuses go it’s pretty superfluous.
