It's not enforced simply because riding a bike on the road is fucking dangerous. I walk pretty much everywhere and hate people riding a bike on the pavement, but the rational me also knows how fucking dangerous riding on the road is because there are too many dickheads who can't drive safely. The police here did a big publicity blitz about how they were going to enforce riding on the roads. They quietly dropped it a few months later when cyclist fatalities went up by either 8% or 18%, I forget which. When was the last time you saw someone wear a helmet while cycling? Only people I see do it are proper cyclists out near me. Never seen Deliveroo with one, or lights, or reflective gear. I do. But I guess I count as a proper cyclist.
I tend to find that proper cyclists wearing helmets mostly do things like stop at red lights, whereas it's the 'sunday driver' cyclists without helmets who burn through them.
When I'm sitting at a red light and someone burns past me straight through it it annoys me too.
I think there was a scientific study that found that when cyclists wore helmets and reflective gear, the car drivers drove closer to them and put them at more risk. Supposedly they subconsciously think they're 'more professional' cyclists so they don't give them as much margin.
Or maybe car drivers are just cunts.
Anyone who rides for work should be legally required to have insurance. Fuck it, anyone on the road should have insurance. No argument there, but if you start requiring every mum who's popping to the kindergarten down the road, or every 7 year old cycling to the newsagent after school to (a) ride on the road, and (b) have insurance then you're putting up big and basically unenforceable barriers to cycling. If you are actually regularly cycling decent distances on proper roads then it probably makes sense to have insurance, just for yourself if nothing else. I have to say, before these wacky antics started, I didnt actually realise how much of a victim complex cyclists have, so I do apologise for all the incredibly triggering language like 'insurance' and 'slowly' I have been using recently. Given that cyclists have a much higher probability of being killed by drivers ignoring the rules than drivers have of being killed by cyclists breaking the rules, I think their victim complex is pretty justified. |

I cycled to work in Toronto, but it was absolutely awful. Between the awful drivers and the shambolic parking it was just a nightmare. One day some cunt opened his car door, sending me onto the cable car tracks where the wheel got stuck and sent me flying, busting my hip. Didn't cycle on the road anywhere near as much after that.
Generally hate cyclists when driving myself though. But seen an honourable cyclist today actually waiting in line at the lights!

I'm primarily a pedestrian. I literally don't know how to cycle (long story - at least I can swim okay!).
This seems pretty simple to me.
I've seen on tons of occasions, car drivers actively attempt to hurt, maim or kill or or wildly risk doing those to cyclists.
I've never seen a cyclist do the same in reverse, nor, logically, could they (worst I've seen is a fist-on-bonnet - hardly compares to a guy sideswiping the cyclist, which is what caused fist-on-bonnet!).
So some car drivers are utter scum, frankly. Definitely if they regularly complain about cyclists who aren't doing something actively nuts. Car drivers who routinely complain about cyclists also tend be massive fuck-off giant hypocrites, because they make an effort to make the roads too dangerous for cyclists, then try and concern-troll that it's awful for cyclists to ride on the pavement. Fuck off whinging drivers. You abusive cunts are why they do.
Note none of this applies to the vast majority of drivers who don't whinge about cyclists routinely. But if the shoe fits...
As for "danger to pedestrians", I'd say that in my experience living in London, obviously I've had more bikes drive near me, but far fewer actual risks of death than the smaller number of cars that I've seen nearly knock people down. Just a few weeks ago I saw a dumb shitbird floor it through a zebra crossing with people on it against a red light. Moustachioed piece of shit.
I don't even really care about most pavement-cyclists because generally they're safe and polite. Far more polite than my fellow pedestrians. I think I've been forced out of the way by pavement-cyclists, like a handful of times, and never into the road. One time a lycra-warrior type, you know wealthy middle-aged guy in the full kit with a bike worth thousands did scream at a whole bunch of us pedestrians (on a bloody belisha beacon crossing, the dumb twat), but that's once in my entire life, and I work in the city, where those people are rife. Whereas I don't go a week without seeing someone running a red light or turning into a side street at speed without indicating around here. One time it was my fucking landlord and he nearly killed me, motherfucker. He didn't even recognise me which tells you a lot about his vision. Anyway, the most dangerous pedestrians are, as I've complained about before, the local "Yummy Mummy" brigade (puke - seriously heard them describe themselves that way though), who love to put two overpriced pushchairs next to each other (often feat. children far too big for pushchairs - I know there are genuine excuses but I am skeptical they apply to all these kids), and then refuse to get out of the way for any other pedestrians up to and including old ladies with canes, and make you walk in the street. Jesus. I've seen more real danger from their behaviour than cyclists.

Well, this was back in the UK I saw stuff like that. Here it’s mostly impatience and ignorance. I have a coworker who was nearly killed and ended up in a coma for several weeks because some guy in his charger thought he could beat his bicycle to a turn.

I think I must be lucky, the worst road rage I've ever seen is a guy on a motorbike punch a wing mirror off because the van cut him up.
Seen a lot of cyclists and scooter wankers go through red lights when I lived in Brighton though. It was scary just watching them do it.
I lived in Holland when I was growing up and they have got it right. The cunts will just mow you down if you step on their bike lane too.

Drivers who don't stop at crossings and give you a wave as if to say sorry or thanks or whatever they think they're saying really are twats though. I'm not letting you pass, I'm just not down for you running me over I ain't stepping off the curb until a car is close enough to tell if it's going to stop because of those people
I will wait for cyclists though because I imagine it's more of an effort to stop an start again if you're cycling

I just stopped at about a dozen red lights on the way to work.
About half of them were pedestrian crossings with no-one crossing them.
I do pretty much always stop at red lights, because I'm a good boy, but I also understand why a lot of cyclists don't.
If you stop, particularly on an uphill, you lose all your momentum and have to get moving again, which is much easier in a car.
Also, the timing on lights is usually set for cars, so if you stop for one light in a car, you'll likely cruise through the next dozen on green. The timing isn't set for bikes, so you may well get stopped at every bloody one. And because you lose your momentum at each one, there's a higher chance you'll get stopped at the next one.
I think the parking rules are different here, but what I really hate is when the car comes past you with about half an inch to spare, and then decides to pull over right in front of you.
Which is also why I hate buses.

Although, it's a long time ago and I won't claim to be a proficient cyclist. On the main road through town here, there is a great big wide pavement with shared cycling and pedestrian space and it seems to work really well. It's good to cycle and walk on. It clearly is possible, it just comes down to whether the planners want to encourage non-car usage. |
