You've seen drivers actively trying to kill cyclist tons of times? Are you from the Mad Max future? I take it you don't go round Elephant and Castle and down to Streatham much? Because I will say, it seemed like I barely saw it before I moved south of the river, but since I did? I've seen it a bunch yeah, mostly people intentionally swerving at cyclists, or intentionally trying to squeeze them off the road/into parked cars. Both risk killing the cyclist if the driver fucks up at all (and people do - a guy in the US who was trying to just "menace" cyclists killed several of them a few months ago). But Elephant and Castle, especially the roundabout seems to be some kind of hotspot for this shit. The long road down to Balham from Streatham by the park is also pretty damn special for this, I think because there are a large number of people cycling in the area - I mean, I'll be honest, it's special for all sorts of bad behaviour. I've seen, on that one road (which I used to walk 1.5 miles down twice a day for my commute): 1) Cars intentionally swerving at cyclists - multiple times. Obvious as hell too. I assume scaring is the goal, but as noted, it's risking their lives. Also just a lot of unfriendly/unsafe driving, even from bus drivers - people driving way too close to cyclists or intentionally trying to block them (which I'd put as different from swerving at them). 2) Cars refusing to stop for pedestrians and cyclists at two of the crossings, even the one with the traffic light - I get that the road before the light was kind of fast, but you don't get to just fucking drive through a red light because you're impatient, you shit. And yeah as someone mentioned, the fucking waving at people is just adding insult to injury. At least own that you're a crook, don't try and make out it's consensual! 3) Cyclists on the pavement - loads of 'em, all different types - but I'd have less sympathy if it wasn't for 1. Thankfully the Lycra Warriors tend to ride in the road, I guess it's part of their deal. 4) Lunatics on various mobility scooters, e-scooters, those weird two-wheel or one-wheel things the name of which escapes me (like a Segway but with no control column). Way more of a menace than the cyclists, because half of them - especially the white people, sorry but it's true! - can't control their vehicles. I saw an incredible confrontation between a man with three dogs and a mobility scooter OAP who managed to nearly run him and them down on the bridge over the railway. I've seen the same person nearly running over all sorts of people on the high street too - their scooter is gigantic. 5) Aforementioned "flying road block" paired rich mums with pushchairs, who as noted will happily make you walk into traffic to get around them unless you really give them the evil eye (which I honestly don't like doing to anyone who isn't an actual thug). 6) Countless "loose children" on scooters dozens or hundreds of yards from ineffectual parents. I mean, I guess that's fine, apart from the kids often nearly ram into old ladies and the like (or do!), and I feel like it's maybe unfair on the kids that their parents are letting them do this right next to a pretty fast road. That road is a shitshow. But it kept me in surprisingly good shape walking it both ways every day, I do miss it.

My biggest beef with cyclists is pretty minor but it is actually illegal here so I am in the right at least, is when they cycle on the road right next to a bike lane. And as someone who used to cycle for a living I don't buy any of the normal excuses surrounding the condition of the paths or junk that causes punctures etc.. That was my daily life, I lived in those lanes and verges. If you are getting daily punctures then you are doing something wrong. Ride to the conditions not your bloody strava record and also ride an appropriate bike, of course when you rely on it for a pay check you may take a different approach to the casual rider.
I'd also quite happily never ride a bike in anger again, haven't done so in about 10 years.

That's the longest way to say yes I've ever seen. I mean I was warned about going South of The River, so I suppose it being Mad Max is part of that.

I’ve cycled round E&C plenty of times, it’s only dangerous if you yourself are a bit of a liability

It used to be, right? I did mine at school. Although, it's a long time ago and I won't claim to be a proficient cyclist. It still is, isn't it? Last time I was back in the UK and we visited a primary school to have a look around, there was a big bunch of kids in dayglo green vests doing their cycling proficiency out the front of the school. Maybe it's optional?

I saw this little old lady doing her best to hobble past a puddle before a car came past a couple of weeks ago. She didn't make it and got completely drenched. She then literally turned around and stood there stamping her foot and shaking her fist, ranting
I felt bad for finding it funny

There’s bikability which is the new cycling proficiency provision but it’s not mandatory and not all LEAs support it

It's more than "a bit" dodgy given I've seen this from buses and on foot, especially given the bad behaviour from car and van drivers.

My favorite E&C moment from the old place is when someone had a day trip to London and was asking for recommendations. I told him to go walk around E&C ostensibly as a joke, but he took it seriously and spent half the day meandering around the markets there.

Contrary to belief, drivers rarely want to kill cyclists. In fact the vast majority of drivers just want to get where they’re going without incident. If you’re one of these cyclists who has to film their rides due to regular life threatening incidents, perhaps you need to look at yourself as the cause because I can count the number of these occurrences on one hand despite doing 10,000km on the road every year

Those markets are all gone now, place has been completely rebuilt. You have the guy a once in a lifetime opportunity there grem, you should be proud

Not that this means much either but I used to go up to E&C fairly regularly a good 15/20 years ago (jesus christ now I feel old) to see my at the time girlfriend, and there’s a distinct memory of her buying a bike, taking it out for the first time and then her going “I’m never doing that again” and selling it straight away. Not that people were trying to murder her or anything, just how crazy unsafe it all seemed.

When I'm in a car, my annoyance with cyclists is usually due to them doing something stupid that puts them at increased risk of being killed by me like going past a junction on the pavement going against traffic when I'm about to pull out and run the risk of not seeing them. It's the fact that I don't want to kill them yet some seem to want to act in a way that makes it way more likely is apparently my problem.
There's a rule of thumb that motorcyclists apply which is to ride like everybody is an idiot who can't see you and is trying to kill so, so ride appropriately. Some cyclists seem to ride like there's nobody else about.
(Can I emphasise the word "some" before knickers get twisted)

The E&C roundabout is barely functional for cars - I can't imagine why you would try to cycle around it.

It’s getting that way, high rise residential apartments are going up and it’ll be a “destination” like Stratford soon enough
