No Man's Sky on the Steam Deck!? How have they managed that??

They're porting it to switch too.

Beginning to get quite hyped for this. I'll probably end up getting the official dock too so that I can continue games on the TV after commuting.
Still a bit torn over whether the 512GB model is worth it for the anti glare screen and lack of faffing with SD cards.

I'll probably end up getting the official dock too so that I can continue games on the TV after commuting. I'll be interested to see the price on it, and if it's actually decently available. I've got a USB-C hub, which can accept power (though it's not powered by default), which might just do everything I need anyway. But if the SteamDeck one is sturdy in construction, not much more than generic USB-C docks in price and actually available (rather than "we can ship in X months") then it seems reasonable for the convenience. I ordered the 256GB model but if I'd know how much games were going to increase in storage requirements over the last year I might have thought twice about that. OTOH SD cards just seem to be getting bigger, cheaper and faster, so there's that.

Yeah, my work gave all remote workers an unpowered hub with a PD power input option, so I'll have a look and see if that can do the job first. A bit messier but it'll probably do.

I'm pretty sure it'll work with any compliant dock/USB-C monitor.
I did go for the 512 primarily for the anti-glare screen since I plan to use it like I used to use the Vita while it was viable and the games I was playing had PS3 version save transfers: playing games on commutes and trips on the Deck, then I transfer the saves using the cloud to my PC to continue with flash graphics/high resolutions, leaving the Deck open as a second screen device for streaming/browsing etc. I think it'll be surprisingly capable on the desktop with those Ryzen CPU cores and a decent amount of RAM.

All of the impressions I've seen of the Steam Deck look pretty positive (save for some question marks over the battery life) and I'm increasingly hyped for this. My only real question is whether my Q2 order will mean April or June... 🤔

My main concern with my cheapo dock is if it'll do 4k/60 (for older games obviously)

The Phawx did an interesting set of comparisons with how much power you could save by using FSR, so while a game might cane the battery if you let it run free in high detail you could reduce the res a bit, maybe cap the framerate and more than double your battery life. I think I'll get a lot of value from being able to make that choice.

The battery has remained my biggest concern with Steam Deck, especially as it seems big enough to have had a bigger battery (the GPD Win 3 has a bigger battery IIRC) included.
I have a Q2 (moved from Q1 when date fell back) 512GB ordered.

Most of my library is unplayable on Steam Deck. Makes it a much harder sell for me.

I think it'll become more clear in a couple of days when people can show more of the OS, but it looks like Gamescope might be the thing that helps the most with battery worries. I don't think running the CPU at the full 15W is going to be terribly practical for portable play as I suspect the fan will become quite loud and annoying for those around you but Gamescope lets you reduce res and cap the framerate (seemingly with better frame pacing than vsync in some cases) to fit things into 7-11W more easily. Combined with the more efficient RDNA2 graphics it should still get much more battery for the equivalent performance than any of the handheld PCs out there right now.
I do think that when the Aya Neo Next gets the AMD 6800U it'll be a really interesting comparison to make. That's going to have 8 CPU cores, Zen 3 architecture and the slightly more efficient process node in its favour. If this type of product catches on, in a year or two there are going to be some really interesting devices in this handheld form factor and it's going to affect my decisions when it comes to upgrading from my current laptop when the time for that comes in a few years. I can already see the Deck supplanting it for some trips.
edit: I also think that at some point people will be able to set system performance profiles for the Deck like they do with the controller, similar to the way Geforce Experience can edit your ingame settings for you based on your graphics card and desired frame rate.

Ooo, I've got 69 verified and 61 playable in my Steam library, and... 907 Untested.
Either >100 games a launch or less than approx 10% compatibility depending on how cynical you are...

Only some 50 games verified/playable for me.
Worst. Launch. Lineup. Ever.

Oh cool! Looks fun! Nothing here yet. I just checked my order and found out that past me decided to preorder the most expensive model, FFS! If I cancel it I'll go to the back of the queue Ah well, is what it is. I ordered 17th July 21, no idea where that puts me in the queue. Just says "after Q2"

Really? Seems like a likeable guy that does tech reviews that don’t take up half an hour.

Yeah, seems like a pretty likable paedo to me
The Steam Deck is so ugly though, even the white bit of the analogue sticks seems like an odd choice and just looks bad

Like a grown up Game Gear. Nothing will look worse than the PS5 ecosystem. Truly awful unless one is putting it next to your Transformer models below your Star Wars posters.

I kind of like the white accents in the analog stick. It's the d-pad and face button placement that gets me. It's like they HAD to put in those touch pads from the old Steam Controller and it made them shove off the actual bits you're going to use to the edge. It just looks like a big ugly block.

Mateyboy2D talks about that in the video. Says he was worried the same as you, but it works well.

Really intrigued to see what this is like with Win11 installed and GamePass games running. That would make it an absolute purchase, Xbox on the go and plug it in to TVs in other rooms.

I’m not sure if it has that Trusted Platform Module that is required for Win 11.
