If you go the EmuDeck way I highly recommend using EmulationStation over the "add all your roms to steam itself" approach. It just clutters stuff too much. If there's something you really want on there though, you can then add those individually.

Batocera is a tidy way of compartmentalising the retro emulation stuff from the rest of the team library. However, I found that:
a) you really need a mouse and keyboard connected at the start, to get everything set up optimally. Not a huge hardship though
b) Dual-booting to a SD card just felt a step too far removed for me to want to play something on the hoof. Especially when SteamOS is so slick.
After realising I barely loaded Batocera up, I ended up going down the Emudeck/EmulationStation route instead, and I do make more use of that.

I'll probably go the emudeck for when I do mine, and put a few choices on a steam collection for direct load with the rest accessible via the emu gui. Having to dual boot seems like a massive faff.
I'll start simple and just get some SNES and mega drive up and running. The YouTube videos I saw of setup l looked piss easy.
Played batman for about 4 hours last night and my hands didn't cramp once which is amazing. Used to play on the switch for about 20 mins and my hands felt like they were turning inside out

I meant a full 256/512GB image that's all set up specifically for the Steam deck. Just use Rufus or whatever to write it to the SD card and boot from it and away you go, no further config needed. I can totally see your other point though, but I kind of liked keeping steam os nice and clean and not having random ROMs scattered around it.

How do I run Elite Dangerous on the Deck? Specially want to play it in docked mode. I take it I need an Epic games account and have purchased the game. But what then? Do I install and run Heroic Launcher and that will download the game to my Deck and I can run it from the main menu?

Of course! Doh! It wasn't showing up in the Deck but just went to Steam and bought it.

Just went to get Windows set up on my OLED for a bit of P3R action on my commute. No bloody WiFi or audio drivers!
Guess it's ended up being a good thing I dragged my heels with selling my LCD, then...

I know you have already bought this on Steam, but you could also have used Heroic, as you thought. It's a pretty easy thing to set up. The only annoyance I've had with Heroic is that it occasionally loses the account information for Epic, so you have to link it up again. Other than that, it works pretty seemlessly.

There's something on GitHub called nonsteamlaunchers and it will set lots of different ones up for you. Is this better or worse than heroic (which I believe is just epic) ?
I still haven't set anything else up yet, figure I'll do it when I fancy playing one of the games I have on those stores. Currenly going through the bioshock series

Heroic does Epic, GoG and Amazon Prime. Don't know anything about nonsteamlaunchers, but Heroic seems to do the job (although, I play mostly stuff I have on Steam, so haven't used it that much).

I found Heroic and Lutris both to be finnicky as hell. Nonsteamlaunchers is the way to go.

Sid Meier’s Alpha Centaurii (plus expansion) are on the Stram store! Currently on sale for £2.
I had it installed via GOG and played through a game this time last year, but had some compatibility issues with FMV clips. I don’t know if they have been sorted, I assume it’s ok since it’s been listed again.

Youngest has decided to sell his switch lite so now I have a 128gb SD card spare and decided today was the day to install emudeck.
What was a casual 'let this install itself while I work' turned into a frustrating 6 or 7 attempts before it was finally installed. No rhyme or reason, just en error has occured, please restart or just hanging.
Still. It's all done now and I just need to put some roms on it. I'll start with some snes for a bit of stompy Cybernator or Probo...err Contra.

There are a select few games which I think properly hold up in the modern day, but quite a lot don't. In my opinion (other peoples opinion may vary).

there is a ps2 emulator on here which i'm actually impressed by so I think i might delve into some of that. surely some of the big hitters will have been done, thinking wipeout or maybe even the original god of wars which i never played

PS2 emulation was shaky for a long time but the PCSX2 team put years of work into basically redoing all of it and the Duckstation guy backported the game interface into it as well. Compared to even 5 years ago it’s made massive strides, which is way later than you’d expect given the age of the system.

I've been a nostalgia fueled rom binge through my childhood tonight.
Bit of mario all stars, Cybernator, bubsy, zool, un squadron, super alert, axelay, sonic and many others finished with a 2 hour stint on streets of rage 2. Still love that soundtrack.
I've even played some god of war on PS2, never played it before. It's showing its age, camera and control wise for sure but still very playable and I can even run it double res for the crispy grafix.
Plane journey sorted!

What I forgot over time since stopping, is that downloading versions of yuzu ever since TotK dropped for playing on my main pc, I was also hoovering up Linux versions as well, you know, just in case
Upshot is I now have yuzu slotted into emudeck and playing TotK on my deck. Runs mighty fine too, I might actually play it now.

Anybody recommend a decent power bank for the deck?
I was looking at an Anker 737 140w thing but it seems like overkill.
I've just picked up a Anker GaN nano plug that folds up, because the standard plug annoys me greatly that it doesn't fit in the banded strap in the case

No idea about power banks, but yeah the charger it comes with not fitting in the snack compartment is pretty annoying. I got a 45w Samsung travel charger for the same reason. Nice long cable too.

I have this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CB1BVHTK/But mainly because it was on some stupidly cheap deal for £25 a while back. It seems 'good' (i.e. it charges my electronic devices quickly like I want it to).

Just been playing around with Geforce Now as the ultimate tier was half price.
It's pretty impressive really, makes Game Pass look like crap in comparison. Could easily see a world where I ran my games primarily on the deck and dipped into a GFN subscription when extra oomph was worthwhile for a better experience. Think the value would compare favourably to my 7900xt based gaming pc.

As a dad of 2 and with a very busy job, I ended up selling the consoles I had and only kept the Steam Deck. I’ll need to have a play with GFN, because it could well keep me from buying a home console again for a while.

I also bought this and then saw Nvidia had produced a native version of Geforce Now for the Steam Deck which means none of the fuss of side loading which I had tried and failed miserably at. I downloaded it last night and it is fantastic on the Deck. Playing maxed out games on the machine looks amazing and feels like a very natural way to use the machine. I also signed up to the half price deal but can finally see myself sticking with the ultimate tier now I have a good way of using it (on my MacBook it didn't feel right).

Never even considered geforce now before, I'm looking through the games on their catalogue now. How come they list which drm/store the games are from, is it not through geforce now directly?

Isn’t it like a VM, like you get a desktop on which you install launchers and log in with your accounts?
