If you go the EmuDeck way I highly recommend using EmulationStation over the "add all your roms to steam itself" approach. It just clutters stuff too much. If there's something you really want on there though, you can then add those individually.

Batocera is a tidy way of compartmentalising the retro emulation stuff from the rest of the team library. However, I found that:
a) you really need a mouse and keyboard connected at the start, to get everything set up optimally. Not a huge hardship though
b) Dual-booting to a SD card just felt a step too far removed for me to want to play something on the hoof. Especially when SteamOS is so slick.
After realising I barely loaded Batocera up, I ended up going down the Emudeck/EmulationStation route instead, and I do make more use of that.

I'll probably go the emudeck for when I do mine, and put a few choices on a steam collection for direct load with the rest accessible via the emu gui. Having to dual boot seems like a massive faff.
I'll start simple and just get some SNES and mega drive up and running. The YouTube videos I saw of setup l looked piss easy.
Played batman for about 4 hours last night and my hands didn't cramp once which is amazing. Used to play on the switch for about 20 mins and my hands felt like they were turning inside out

I meant a full 256/512GB image that's all set up specifically for the Steam deck. Just use Rufus or whatever to write it to the SD card and boot from it and away you go, no further config needed. I can totally see your other point though, but I kind of liked keeping steam os nice and clean and not having random ROMs scattered around it.

How do I run Elite Dangerous on the Deck? Specially want to play it in docked mode. I take it I need an Epic games account and have purchased the game. But what then? Do I install and run Heroic Launcher and that will download the game to my Deck and I can run it from the main menu?

Of course! Doh! It wasn't showing up in the Deck but just went to Steam and bought it.

Just went to get Windows set up on my OLED for a bit of P3R action on my commute. No bloody WiFi or audio drivers!
Guess it's ended up being a good thing I dragged my heels with selling my LCD, then...

I know you have already bought this on Steam, but you could also have used Heroic, as you thought. It's a pretty easy thing to set up. The only annoyance I've had with Heroic is that it occasionally loses the account information for Epic, so you have to link it up again. Other than that, it works pretty seemlessly.

There's something on GitHub called nonsteamlaunchers and it will set lots of different ones up for you. Is this better or worse than heroic (which I believe is just epic) ?
I still haven't set anything else up yet, figure I'll do it when I fancy playing one of the games I have on those stores. Currenly going through the bioshock series

Heroic does Epic, GoG and Amazon Prime. Don't know anything about nonsteamlaunchers, but Heroic seems to do the job (although, I play mostly stuff I have on Steam, so haven't used it that much).

I found Heroic and Lutris both to be finnicky as hell. Nonsteamlaunchers is the way to go.

Sid Meier’s Alpha Centaurii (plus expansion) are on the Stram store! Currently on sale for £2.
I had it installed via GOG and played through a game this time last year, but had some compatibility issues with FMV clips. I don’t know if they have been sorted, I assume it’s ok since it’s been listed again.
