If you hammer FPS games on a handheld can you ever get natural at aiming?

The Deck in particular has a really good implementation of gyro aiming available as part of Steam Input so you do the rough aiming with the stick and then get the precision by pivoting the whole system - it’s surprisingly precise and really natural once you get your favoured level of sensitivity in.
One cool feature it has is that it can detect when you have your thumb on the stick so it can be set to only activate the gyro aiming when you have your thumb on the aiming stick. Personally I have it to activate in games like Borderlands when I pull the left trigger to aim - this prevents you just moving yourself for comfort from skewing your aim.

I don’t like it for fps games, it’s fine when they’re designed for controllers but I need a mouse for online stuff which I can’t be bothered with these days.

Ah yes, I remember when they released the Steam Controller with those haptic pads they showed a video of somebody that was highly skilled getting headshots. I think that was using gyro to fine tune. Another thing I've found is if the game is 60fps it helps a bit. Borderlands 2 on switch is awful for shanking aiming, you overcompensate and the framerate doesn't help because it seems to dip into the 20s. Bioshock and Skyrim are slightly better because they aren't really twitch games but they still don't feel natural. I guess also, the sticks on the steam deck look way better than the ones on the switch. Having said that about 60fps, I uninstalled Quake after five minutes.

My Steam Deck arrived yesterday and after that initial spate of downloading stuff, I have to say I am really impressed. I am not likely to run any (or many) modern titles on it, but the older titles in my catalogue look fantastic on the small screen and so far aside from some noise whilst it was updating, the machine seems very quiet, bordering on silent. For such a large machine, it is also surprisingly comfortable. Delighted with my purchase so far!

@locoold
Like you, I don't use mine for playing big blockbuster games. I mainly use it for smaller indie games, my existing library AND EMULATION!
If you haven't already, then you should consider getting EmuDeck on it and setting up emulation. Its so simple to do with EmuDeck, just a matter of following a few basic prompts. I mainly use my Deck for Emulation now. I have took the time to choose and download just the very best games of each system, Master System, NES, SNES, Megadrive, PS1, N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Arcade.
Its absolutely amazing, love how I can plug it into the TV for the big screen experience or take it away with me.

It's a totally excellent machine, a tweaker's paradise and it can play pretty much anything you throw at it. It's also been looking after me while waiting for my new build PC to have its motherboard replaced. Loads of fun.
I have to say I was surprised at how good stuff looked on a bigger screen when docked as well!

richyrooI've not ventured into emulating yet, it's not really something I have ever done much of so would literally have no idea where to start! Maybe once I am over the excitement of seeing games play well on a handheld system I might have a go. There is a real buzz to seeing things like Fallout New Vegas or the much maligned Alpha Protocol running on the Deck.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a portable power pack for Steam Deck? On a transatlantic flight end of next week and would like to be able to have some BG3 to pass the time. The hour and a half to 2 hours that I would likely get isn't quite long enough. Ideally it would double the time, if possible. Seen this one - www.amazon.co.uk/INIU-Charging-Portable-Powerbank-Compatible/dp/B09YLWY7V8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3But it is a little more thani wanted to spend, seeing as I probably won't use it much besides this flight (and the return).

Does your plane definitely not have laptop charging sockets? They're pretty standard on new ones especially once you get on a longer haul flight. Seatguru should give you the info you need.
Otherwise that does seem quite cheap for a 90-plus watt-hour battery pack.

It's Virgin Atlantic and they only have USB ports in Economy, with sockets only being in Premium or Upper. I would assume that the USB port wouldn't provide enough power.

You're not going to get a better charge pack than that for the price. I'd just go for that tbh.

Yeah, the Anker equivalent is 135 quid which is hard to justify if you're not going to use it much.

I always come over prepared for my flights, then decide to just pop my airpods in and close my eyes.

Thanks, seems that is the best bet then.
Looking again though, looks like there might be power sockets on the plane we are taking (b787-9). I only noticed a USB when I flew last year, but maybe it was tucked away somewhere (didn't need one then). The flight back, with Delta, is clearer that they do have power sockets.
Think I will just save the £60 and take the risk that they have a socket, but good to know if I want one in the future.

Sometimes the power socket is in the frame of the chair in front right down the bottom. Took a couple of hours on a recent flight to notice it 🤣

That's where they stash them on new trains as well. Sometimes they forget to turn them on so you might need to speak to staff but I've run a full on desktop charger out of one, with my phone and deck going at the same time.

Does the deck always slow charge when you’re gaming at the same time?

Depends on a lot of things, performance level, demanding game, battery charge level, but generally yes.

The battery can charge at about 30W if it’s in standby but the maximum power in is 45W so once your entire system hits 15 (so about 8-9W on the TDP limiter) it’s then having to skim more off. I’ve never seen it use more than about 40-42 watts even when playing and charging at low battery so in reality it’s going to slow down charging earlier. There’ll also be limitations as the heat goes up as well which will make it back off more. The Gamers Nexus deck review video noted that the battery charging IC can get really hot so there’s not much room within spec.

Thanks. It’s not usually an issue but I’m finding BG3 is wiping my battery out super fast even playing plugged in. Time to tweak the settings more I guess.

If you back off the TDP limit to 13 or even 11 watts that should make a big difference without a huge drop in performance, I think. Should make things quieter on the fan end too. 11W is right on the top of the efficiency curve for the Deck APU.

Upon browsing the steam deck reddit page, I found a thread about streaming Starfield through Xbox Cloud Gaming. There was a post recommending to use a script through the Edge browser to improve the streaming experience. github.com/redphx/better-xcloudI did this last night. The image quality is better after tweaking the options available. The image is still softer than playing natively, but so much better than it was when I first tried to use XCloud as it was called then. I am very happy with it now.

Hmm my Deck has stopped holding a charge. When unplugged it drops from 100 to 0 in about 3 minutes. Going into desktop mode 'battery health' is at zero also. Anyone had this issue?
Trying a 'leave it to discharge in BIOS mode fix' I've seen mentioned online. Fingers crossed!
Six months back I also had a dodgy dpad (had to return it for repair) so maybe I've just got an unlucky one.

Finally bitten the bullet and going to send the Steam Deck back, Valve just sent me my label etc for this RMA thing.
Basically for months, games crash for no reason (they freeze and I have to hard reset the Deck, there is no pattern as to when they are going to freeze) and various other issues. Another particular one is the Deck just resets and says "Verifying installation" several times a day.
Just playing a game now and it's done it twice in ten minutes, whilst other times I lose loads of progress when no save points and it decides to randomly freeze.
Anyway, sending it back this week and hopefully the next one won't be shite as otherwise it's a lovely bit of kit. Back to the Switch for now!

On my desktop, which admittedly is a 6 core 5 year old i5, BG3 is basically the only game I've ever played that's fully maxed out the CPU. None of the Paradox games with their deep simulation and number crunching or a Total War with thousands of units on screen have ever managed it. Also I've ordered a Steam Deck in the sale.

Giving the 3.5 preview a whirl. Early reports say there’s quite a significant performance boost, something to do with the new Linux kernel better supporting multithreading.

Seems to be a mild improvement on BG3, a huge improvement on Starfield, and things like CP2077 are running way better too. This should be good when it hits stable.
