As the son took over the TV for the new Zelda game been having a bit more of a fiddle with the old Steam Deck. Nice that PS3 level stuff can run nicely on 5W with a reasonable battery life (been playing Remember Me). One oddity is the number of "unsupported" (not "unknown" which is fair enough) titles that appear to work fine. The original Unreal on a handheld is surprisingly decent (once I found a controller profile and added a few missing buttons to it) and ran without having to cherry pick Proton versions. Pinball Arcade also runs nicely but I went with a reccomended Proton for that one. Both listed as non-working. Got quite a few oddities in the unknown category like Beeswing (which ironically I got to a non-completable state on my main PC the last time I tried it). Currently still Gogging on Heroic, but may look into adding the games to the steam liat for customised settings (Heroic is treat as one "game" for settings purposes). I still don't like the idea of buying game available on GOG on Steam but it is causing more issues now After watching the run-throughs of the newer hardware like ROG Ally, it looks like to cannot match SD on low wattages (even as high as 12) and having the same battery size as SD makes it a bit pointless (the GPD Win Max 2 or AOK Zoe A1 Pro with 65Wh+ batteries look much more viable for high-end gaming). I need to get my emulators optimised better, Saturn would be nice...

The new EA PGA Tour game runs well on the deck after the latest patch, only issue is without a internet connection you can't play the career mode.

I wonder how long that will last. Not long I'd bet. Did not last long. Negative long.

Anyone had much experience with Lutris?
I had a go the other day at getting StarCraft 2 working but it was quite a faff (adding battle.net and then StarCraft itself as non steam apps). So far still not working, so wondered if Lutris might be the easiest way...
Guessing a lot of people have been doing this sort of thing with Diablo 4 of late, What's the verdict?

I used Lutris to install Bnet and it works great - it's gone from D3 to D2R to D4 very smoothly. I just run Battle.net as a Steam shortcut and it works great. The only change I had to make was to activat the 'close Battle.net on game launch' option.

Ah nice... I thought I was using Proton Experimental which is what the other guides I'd seen recommended, as opposed to Proton GE, but after another try it seemed to work and it's pretty excellent.
I do have to go in via Battle.net (launching the StarCraft 2 exe doesn't work) but it is all working nicely now. I know it's an old game but still well impressed by how nice it looks, controls are pretty decent even with all the Deck's pads buttons and easy customisation, can see myself playing through the campaigns at least!
Still not sure what was going wrong first time, something didn't seem right and it seems most of the buttons (including the one to "play") were missing.
Useful to know that Lutris isn't necessary.

Yeah, I tried setting up shortcuts to the actual game's executable with varying luck. I just ended up using a single shortcut to run battle.net and launching games from within that instead.
It's worth going battle.net settings and choosing to close battle.net on game launch if you haven't already.

Yeah, that's the big one. Makes the whole thing feel as seamless as it can be.
I played a bunch of Diablo 4 on my Deck plugged into a TV over the weekend and it acquitted itself really well - the 720p in Integer scaling just made it look like a big 720p HDTV from like 2010 and it spent most of its time at 60fps so it played great as well.

Interesting, thanks for the tip... What difference does closing battle.net on launch make, I hadn't noticed any issues...

Less resources for it to hog, which I guess isn't as important for SC, but it's very welcome for D4. Plus it just feels a bit slicker going back to the steam deck menu when you quit the game.

The biggest thing is that you don't have to manually close it after you leave the game. If you leave the game without setting it, then it'll just put you back to the battle.net window.

I don’t bother with the link to the specific game either, just launch battle net. You can just leave it as linking to the setup one and it’ll do any updates on launch.
Also using proton 8.4 right now.

Yeah, I had both D2R and D4 installed at the same time and just launched through the launcher. If you try and do multiple games on battle.net separately, it maintains a different battle.net installation which just seemed wasteful.

I finally relented and was incredibly lucky to find a Steam Deck in stock and on sale in the Steam Summer Sale. I got the 256GB version for £390 which seems pretty decent. I had been checking most days for the last fortnight so was relieved to see one on the final day. Now the wait and anticipation!

Such a great little machine and a steal in the Steam sale.
Haven't been able to do Switch emulation on it though because I don't have the right model to dump the firmware etc. Seems like a fun thing to do but not the end of the world!

I really need to have another look at emulation on mine. Metroid Prime via primehack was a bit of a rubbish experience last summer (loads of stutter when it loaded new effects, audio cutting out, massive slowdown after playing for an hour) Probably massively improved by now.
Cracking machine though, even if my Switch always wins the toss when I'm picking something for my commute.

Does anyone have any issues with Heroic logging out their Epic account or general issues with it? Had to relog in a while ago and seemed to be fine. Hadn't really used it since, but went to show a friend how it was setup the other day and was getting lots of errors when trying to load up any game. The error messages seemed to indicate it was not logged in properly, even though it was showing that it was logged in.
Haven't actually tried to log back in to check if that was the problem, but wondering whether it is a bit more stable for others?

I'm very, very, very, VERY tempted to pick up a Deck for my upcoming 40th. My only fear is that it'll be something I'll use for a bit then put to the side just like I did with my Switch which I eventually sold. Decisions, decisions.

D4 works extremely well on it (after a bit of faffing to first set it up) if that helps at all...

Yeah Heroic is great when it works, but has never been consistent for me... at the very least it needs re-logging-in regularly, just a bit of a pain.

Perfect if you have a good backlog of games on your Steam account, particularly indie stuff. You get lots of that on Switch too, but you have to pay the Nintendo tax there. It is a little bit fiddly at times and feels a bit like PC gaming from 20 years ago with some of the tweaks you have to do. However, the reason for that tweaking is the options available to you due to it just being a PC in gaming handheld form. If you stick with the verified games then you don't have to get your hands dirty at all. If you want to get emulators and access to other stores though you mostly can, with a bit of work and acceptance that the experience might be a little less smooth.

On release it had a few issues but all got smoothed out, sometimes when EA app gets updated it's easier to delete the game and reinstall but I haven't had to do that for a few months.

. Perfect if you have a good backlog of games on your Steam account, particularly indie stuff. You get lots of that on Switch too, but you have to pay the Nintendo tax there. Nintendo tax isn’t really a thing anymore, especially not on indie titles. I constantly buy things for $0.99-$4.99. Even big publisher titles are constantly on sale for good prices, and launch prices are cheaper than other platforms because they didn’t do the $70 price hike, Tears of the Kingdom aside. I constantly consider getting a Steam Deck, but the short battery life is the thing that keeps me from jumping in. The price is reasonable at the moment, even for the 512GB option, but I don’t like playing handhelds plugged in. And now with the ASUS Ally out, I figure if I’m gonna get something that lets me play for an hour and a half, I might as well get the one that lets me play at 1080p with the graphics turned up. Then as I continue to debate this in my head, I think, by this point, I might as well wait for the next Nintendo. All that said, that’s just me, and obmaJ should treat himself.

Most games on Steam Deck will give you a lot more time than an hour and half. Unsurprisingly, if you play a modern big budget game, it is going to drain the battery quickly. Play a 2D game or something that is 5+ years old and you will get a lot long, easily 6+ hours.
Recently been playing the classic Tomb Raider games and those will get me close to 10 hours without much difficulty.
The small battery is a bit overblown. It is really quite comparable to a Switch. If you play something that is an equivalent to a Switch game you will get about the same length.
It is going to vary for different people though and what kind of game you want to play. Personally, any game that is going to drain the battery in an hour or 2 is probably something I would rather play on a big screen.
