I wonder how long that will last. Not long I'd bet.
I really should check out Dolphin. I tend to just play gamecube and wii games on my Wii, but it'd be nice to play some of them in higher resolutions. I always assumed getting games off the GC mini-discs would be a hassle though.

Dolphin is made legally, no Nintendo code at all.

That's been true of other emulators, but it hasn't endeared them to the console makers in the past.

It has survived 2 decades already with Nintendo trying to stop it, its legally fine. Downloading iso's is frowned upon and Dolphin says to use legally obtained rips you do yourself, that's all they need to do.

I haven't used Dolphin in a while but CEMU was a brilliant emulator along with the Wii U Helper.
Used it to complete Windwaker HD through lockdown.

Speaking of Nintendo, does anyone have any experience of using Yuzu for Switch emulation? Is it actually any good?

I just looked this up, BoTW runs like crap with lots of shader compilation stutter.

Shame there’s no chance Nintendo will ever do proper ports themselves

I ask out of curiosity more than anything else. The new Advance Wars and Zelda titles (maybe even Metroid Prime) will tempt me into using the Switch properly for the first time since before the Deck, other than some very casual Mario with my toddler on the TV.

The thing with Switch emulation in particular is different people have different ideas of what performance they are looking for. It’s heavy on single thread CPU performance and depending on the game there can be a lot of shader compilation stutter. I’m not happy with how the emulators run on my 3900X/3080 machine but I’m sure there are a lot of people who would be very happy with that level of performance.

SSD upgrade done and just waiting for OS to install. I went for a 1TB WD SN740 from AliExpress, which was every bit as risky as it sounds, but seems legit from my tests before putting it into the Steam Deck.
Probably shouldn't have tried it while on a work call, as I made pretty much every silly mistake that you could make. SD card not taken out before popping the cover, battery not reconnected before putting the shield back in place...

Oof, did the sd card survive?

Yeah, thankfully I didn't use too much force before I realised my mistake! Was only an old slightly ropey 256GB one I'd been using until the SSD arrived anyway.

The Steam Deck tools on windows been updated a few times since I've had it running, now remembers controls, screen refresh rate and tdp for each game I run so getting my xbox rewards for AoE auto sets it at 3 TDP and desktop controls.
Think I've had mine a year, 6 months with the 256GB steam os and 700GB windows ssd and its just getting better.

Would you say that dual-booting to run Game Pass titles on Windows is now relatively pain-free? I do use Cloud Gaming via SteamOS, but running a game natively would of course be better if it wasn't a hassle. I have Batocera to dual-boot from a SD card, but never bother using it because Emulation Station in SteamOS is so easy to use.

KD what are you running on the windows partition? The only thing that's tempted me so far is trying to run abandonware, is it mostly gamepass stuff?

Interesting to see that some Microsoft employees did think of trying to get a more Steam Deck version of Windows working - www.rockpapershotgun.com/microsoft-staff-experimented-with-a-version-of-windows-optimised-for-steam-deckThey say that they didn't have enough people to follow through with it, but I expect attempts would have been squashed. I just don't think it would be in Microsoft's interest and they would rather try to put together their own portable hardware. Personally though, outside of missing out on Game Pass, I'm really not feeling the Windows shaped gap. Outside of the odd compatibility issue (recently been playing the Devil May Cry HD Collection and the FMVs are randomly flipped vertically and horizontally), it has been a very smooth experience.

I think the big stumbling block something like that would hit in a company like Microsoft is that the way Windows has gone over the last several years has really made plain the internal conflict with marketing/upsell - hence the push to 11 after 10 was supposed to be the 'final version of Windows', the telemetry stuff, and let's not forget the shopping/loans shit in Edge or the taskbar trying to push you towards OneDrive.
Obviously there's precedent in the Xbox for ads and stuff, but I wonder how much internal resistance there would be to getting people off the 'full' Windows experience.
And yeah, when I'm using my Deck connected to my monitor it's a very pleasant desktop experience and I don't miss anything from Windows. Hell, I prefer it a lot of the time to using my Mac, though a big part of that might be because I still use Safari as my browser on that.

It was perfect for the Diablo 4 beta, when everyone was looking for proton builds that work I was playing it on Windows. It's the small things like that and of course game pass, Hifi Rush, powerwash sim, Darkest Dungeon are currently installed through GP and I'm planning on Yakuza 4 next.
I have all the launchers on Windows and just use emudeck and steam games with Steamos. I may try a game on both to see what works better or games like Tony Hawks remake, easy to install FF14, Outrun 2 modded. GOG Galaxy is installed fully linked up to my gaming accounts.

The real bonus is being able to do what I want with it and not needing to follow guides, like having crew chief running alongside a racing game, a Web browser that I can download and install from as I would my last 20+ years of pc use.
And after everything I can push a button and go back to Steamos and do all the usual battery saving settings to play on the go.

I didn't play it until the Saturday but at that point I was able to use the D4 profile on Lutris and it installed fine. In the end it's all workarounds, and it doesn't cover Game Pass, but Lutris from what I can tell is pretty good. It's got me playing Diablo 2 Resurrected nice and smoothly, while I wait for the new game.

Good shout on using Windows for D4. It worked well for me in the past just using an SD card, so I'll probably start shopping around for a new A2 one in preparation.
I know Steam OS has the option of diving into desktop mode and faffing to your heart's content, but these days I just want to pick it up and start playing. (admittedly installing Windows is a faff, but it's a one time thing and with Rufus is barely any hassle)

That SD card windows install I had first was quite slow, even on the better Samsung sd card, just longer load and patching times but it got me playing Fortnite fine.

I just remembered I have a small Samsung T5 500GB SSD that connects via USB-C. I might dabble in dual booting Windows from it for some Game Pass titles.
I just need to find an elegant solution to keeping it on the back. Adhesive Velcro?

Realised I had a USB stick with parted magic on it already and a decent bit of free space on the internal SSD, so did a bit of partition jiggery pokery and set up a dual boot earlier with 200GB for Windows. Seems good so far apart from the annoyance of it always booting into Windows unless you manually choose SteamOS from the bootloader... (didn't happen with SD card, that just seemed to remember your last choice and stick with it)
I might go down the external SSD route instead and just keep the internal purely for SteamOS, as it'll be rarely used.

I went hard on it but it's all personal choice, a ssd enclosure sounds ideal but not something I had around to try.
