The release of GoldenEye on switch online and gamepass has reminded me that I put 1964 GEPD on my deck a while back and only played Perfect Dark with it.
So I've been playing the first few levels of GoldenEye this morning, 60fps and modern controls, including gyro and touchpad aiming which I'm getting more and more used to.
I'll check out the Switch version to compare but I'll be surprised if it's as good this.

Back end of last year I was seriously considering getting an emu handheld, looking mainly at things around the Retroid Pocket3+ level, but often spiralling up to the higher end devices. Thanks to a load of YouTube vids and reading through nearly all this thread, I've placed an order for a 64GB Steam Deck.
My Steam library is pretty small, so will have to grab some indies I don't already have on Switch or finished on the main consoles, but looking forward to having Game Pass on it too.
512GB MicroSD cards seem the sweet spot for expansion at the moment so will pick one up in preparation.
Emulation will be the focus, and looks like there are lot's of options for getting that set up, but will probably start with EmuDeck.
If anyone has any good links to resources for background reading, either tweaking or just things that are handy to know, would be much appreciated.

Emu deck is the main one one, there’s also a coin ops legends, stand alone thing of mostly arcade games which is worth a look if you want to play old arcade games on your deck.

Spent this weekend setting a fresh steamos install on my deck then booting into gparted to squeeze it down from the full 1tb to 256gb, then put win11 in the roughly 700gb space left and set it up on the guide again.
It will boot into windows if it's switched on, only need to use the vol down button when booting to get into the original set up, just got to see about making a 512gb sd card the emulator package that begins with B to give me a 3rd option.

I installed 1999's Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri last night. What a game. What a machine.

Abandonwear Dos has some instructions that require setting compat level to "Windows XP" if using Win10, but guess DosBox would work?

Don't know if anyone has posted this here already but I think it's worth having a look at. github.com/CryoByte33/steam-deck-utilitiesThis guy has single handedly written loads of tweaks that eek out some juice from the steam deck. Just download the script to your desktop and run it and then run cryoutilities, you can choose what things to turn off or just revert it all back to normal. But it's garnered some nice results with games like RDR2, and other large open world games.

Gonna install that Cryoutilities thing
I hear it just generally makes things smoother in some games, what's your experience been like with it?
Mildly concerned that I just won't have a clue what to do with it - I already feel that way a bit with the power/GPU settings, I tend to just lower them if I can do so without impacting frame rate.

The good thing with the cryo one is that it's mostly just tweaks that pay off on stability in little bits here and there, but don't adversely affect other things, so there's no real need to tinker with it once it's done.
That said he's still adding functions (the most recent I've seen is a deleted file cleanup that actually cleans up what should have been deleted) so there might be some new things that you may want to monitor if you want to keep up to date.

Checkout the performance guides on Steam Deck Life, the author of CryoUtilities often contributes a range of settings according to performance or detail

Steam Sale time... what're ya buyin?
Top of my list for the Deck are probably
Cyberpunk Inscryption Maaybe FF7 remake but it's still expensive as fuck +Witcher Expansion pass so I can do some cross-play with Xbox instead of in-home streaming
Then a long list of other things that I kind of want but will never have time for:
Resi Evil 2 Tactics Ogre God of War Rollerdrome Divinity 2 Mignight Suns Rimworld Olliolli world Spiderman

Yeah, that the ff7 remake is 40% reduced and yet still somehow £40 is real unpalatable to me.

Steam Deck itself is also 10% off which is actually pretty decent albeit useless for most of us in this thread

Rare too. Valve don't seem to often discount their hardware (except when they wanted to get rid of all those Steam Links and were practically giving them away). No discount (or stock) for the Index . I should avoid buying anything this sale, as I have plenty of stuff to play at the moment. I probably will pick Paranormasight though, which just had a very positive RPS review. At least, I think it is positive; it had a bestest best award and the opening paragraph said to go in blind. Visual novel, so ideal Steam Deck game.

Seriously tempted by that 10% off deal. Brings it down to a smidge over £300. Much happier about splashing that than the £600 I was mulling over for a PSVR2.

I picked it up in the last sale with the bundle including couple of the other devs games (Hex, Pony Island) and enjoyed all three. Worth a punt I'd say! Also I've been sloooowly working my way through Divinity II on the Deck for what feels like forever now - I think I'm about halfway through and I think it's pretty well optimised for the Deck. I would never find the time to play this at all otherwise (picked up the PS5 version some time back but was never able to dedicate any time to it). As far as this sale a few popped up on my list - currently eyeing up a few - Cult of the Lamb, Arcade Paradise, Card Shark, Death's Door & Katana Zero.

At least if I don't use it I won't have that "I can't believe I just spent almost £600 on this!" feeling... ...It'll be £314 instead obviously.

By the time that I’ve burned out on this Championship Manager 01/02 addiction, it might be time for the summer sale.

I'm so on the fence about taking advantage of this sale, reading that Silent Hunter 3 is Steam Deck compatible may have just pushed me over the edge.

I’ve not played SH before, I’ve read that it still holds up well but might be too much of simulation for me. I did have a brief dabble with trying to design an adequate Steam Input profile for Cold Waters. Using a combination of action layers, mode shifting and radial menus seems the way to go with that, but I haven’t spent enough time to make it work yet.

On Steam itself it is listed as compatible and with a cursory Google. Doubt you can install Grey Wolves etc but handheld vanilla SH3 is pretty intriguing prospect.

How does the Deck work for games that require a keyboard (such as old Windows games)? Do you have to bind the buttons manually?

If it's a game that's on Steam then there's a solid chance someone's already made a controller profile that works which you can download through the controller menu in the overlay. Otherwise you can build it out yourself.

You can bring up an on-screen keyboard if you absolutely need to use the keyboard as well.

Also with Decky loader there are some nice plugins that add the protonDB badges to stuff in store and library, and link to recommended settings within the game.
