Given inflation I suppose it *is* technically cheaper now.

Finished Metroid Prime via Primehack - very much recommend it! Been meaning to finish it for years but the Steam Deck has definitely made it easier to pick things up in quieter moments around the house. Back to actual PC games now though. I saw there was a CD Projekt Red sale so picked up Thronebreaker for a change of pace.
I managed to refrain from too many Switch purchases over the years as it annoyed me that I'd lose them once Nintendo moved onto the next generation. Without that holding me back I can see my Steam list growing much faster!

I had an issue with controls not working at all with primehack. Couldn't even navigate the menus, so need to have a proper look at that at some point.
Menu music was nice, though...

I'd at least get it set up on your lunch break and charging + downloading a few games if you can, as the updates take quite a lot of valuable fiddling time.

Splitting my time between Death's Door, Doom (2016) and Secret of Monkey Island.
I'm amazed how good Doom looks and plays!

Windows installation is surprisingly not too bad with a spare SD card. Probably could do with getting an A2 one mind you... So many of the guides online are outdated, or just plain daft (copy drivers to a spare USB drive instead of the future OS drive that's already mounted in front of you... Righto)

Yeah I've got a Windows OTG installation on an SD Card, works surprisingly well.
Speaking of which, wife bought me a Steam Deck at the weekend for my birthday. Enjoying it, immediately stuck Windows on it to enjoy the Game Pass library I'm already paying for.
Quick question to those that have done similar, what solution did people go with to get the game pad working? Seems there's several (GloSC and the such), just wondering which people found the most success with?

As I still would really like a Windows install on my Deck as well as the default (for the wife). I got a fairly fast SD card for it but I assume I am going to have to format it differently for Windows?

Yeah, it's perfectly usable (especially with Steam set to big picture mode in Windows) You'll format the SD card as NTFS and it'll need to stay that way, but apparently it should be usable under steamOS later on (although you may need to change to desktop mode to mount it) You may be able to partition a card for both OS, but my plan is to just stick to two SD cards. One for Windows and one for emulation stuff.
Preparing the SD card is ridiculously easy thanks to Rufus. When you pop it into the steam deck and boot from it would be a bit fiddly without a mouse and keyboard at first, though. I just set up a Windows account without a password and installed Steam and set it to always launch in big picture mode, so should be relatively pain free when I use it in the future without M+K. Any non-steam games like windows store stuff can be added as shortcuts in Steam.

If you haven’t yet, check the purchase history in your Steam account - chances are you’ll already have a tracking number and it might be moving.

I managed to get Doom and custom source ports going smoothly on my Deck this weekend. Not a fan of the current native ports - it's nice having the "official" mods, but something about the controls doesn't feel right to me. Running Doomretro instead and it's great. Easy to set up too if anyone wants me to write up a guide.

Hmm I wonder if I can get chocolate heretic working on Deck... Was quite fun on PC but that was with kB and mouse (with full mouselook).

Shame you can’t set the display to 35hz (or 70). One for the next model maybe!

Hmm I wonder if I can get chocolate heretic working on Deck... Was quite fun on PC but that was with kB and mouse (with full mouselook). You probably can with the method I've used, you just launch a Doom engine game through steam and then you can just install which engines you want (gzdoom, doomsday, chocolate doom, prboom, doomretro), and zdl as a launcher. Then just add all your WADs into ZDL (such as the heretic WAD), link up the installed engines to ZDL, and then away you go. It's really easy, took me about 10 mins. I'll type something up later.
This is Doom 1 running through DoomRetro on my Deck. Unlike the native port, it actually fills the whole screen, plus it's got nice features like the minimal HUD if you want it. Doesn't require setting anything up as a non steam app either, it'll just launch into ZDL when you pick a Doom engine game if you want.

Just got PS5 remote play up and running which seems to work perfectly. Took about 10 minutes mainly because I don't have a keyboard.
Now to get emulation up and running and then I think I'm ready to actually play some games!

Emudeck is pretty easy to set up, but I'm glad I've got a desk set up for work with a dock I can just plug it into for that kind of thing. I found clicking on stuff with the touch screen in desktop mode way to imprecise, and pretty much impossible with the touch pads.
My two most played games on it so far are still Vampire Survivors and Seraph's last stand (even more basic)

Yeah, that's a good shout. Typing out code was doable but more annoying than it needed to be.

Here's the thing i was talking about for easy custom Doom engines + WADs.
First you have to install Luxtorpeda which is a steam play tool like Proton, except it gets native linux versions of supported games to play instead of wrapping the windows ones.
1. Go to desktop mode and the disovery app. Find "ProtonUp-Qt" and install + launch it 2. Click "add version", select Luxtorpeda and the newest version (56 for me) and install 3. Close app when done and restart Steam
Then you have to set up doom/etc, can do this in either mode (note that to use the cursor in gaming mode you hold the steam button and the trackpad moves the mouse):
1. Go to a Doom engine game's properties (Doom, Doom 2, Heretic), go to compatability and select Luxtorpeda. 2. Launch the game (pick anything in the Steam launcher). You'll get a window showing a list of Doom engines. Select the ones you want to install them (it auto launches after installing, so just quit after it's launched and then do the next) 3. Install qzdl from the list once you have all the engines you want. 4. On the settings tab, under "engines", hit add and browse to the engines you installed in step 2 - they'll be folders in your game folder, ie "Doom-retro". Each one has a ".sh" file in it, that's what you're looking for. 5. On the same tab, add your IWADs in the other section. Doom/Doom 2 have Doom/Doom2.Wad in their base folder, along with TNT/Plutonia in separate folders. 6. Back on the main tab add your mods and other wads on the external files list 7. Launch games by selecting engine/base wad/mod wad

Am I right in thinking when you download a game, you just have to leave it on the install page otherwise it stops? So you can’t download while doing something else, or even download several things at once? Because that’s a bit pants.

Nah, you can download in the background and queue up multiple stuff. Press the steam button and go to downloads to see. When stuff is downloading there's also a little icon at the top of the screen you can use to jump straight to the download queue.
One issue I've found when queueing stuff up when I first got it is to be patient and wait for something to start downloading before you move on. Some games have multiple prompts you need to accept before it downloads, so best to get those out of the way before you queue something else.

So you can’t download while doing something else, or even download several things at once? Because that’s a bit pants. You can do other things, but only play simple games as downloading kills performance. You have to go into the download section under settings and allow downloads during gameplay, or if you jump back to the download queue during a game you can set it off ad-hoc.
