After sorting Emudeck and Gamepass, got PS5 Remote Play up and running today. Was excellent playing some Elden Ring on the bog!

I've been playing Metroid Prime via primehack on mine. Played the GC version with original controls via dolphin a few years back, but this is the first time playing it with FPS controls. I can't make up my mind if I like it or not. It feels like a different game and the ease of movement is nice, but it just takes something away from it. Plus it's ridiculously easy too without the clunkiness. I'll probably have to restart on veteran.
Performance is pretty great apart from stutters when new effects come into play. I just can't shake the feeling that I might as well just be playing this on my PC, though. It's a great bit of kit, but I just can't see me grabbing it for my commute over the far more portable Switch. Can't really justify owning it, so I'll probably sell it while there's still a market for them.

I know what you mean. I have a huge back log on Switch so I need to sort that. And the size is a bit much. I’ve yet to settle on anything to properly get stuck into on the deck. And a lot of the games I would just rather play on pc if it weren’t for the fact I work in that room all day.
I have enjoyed tinckering on it though, and ps5 remote play is very handy. I’m keeping it, but it’s not clicked 100% yet.

I’ve been getting into a Vampire Survivors clone kick and the Deck is perfect for it. These lower spec early access type games with pick up and play design are perfect for the machine and being able to just go onto my big PC with the cloud saves makes it a great choice even with a big desktop available.
Soul Hackers 2 next week - that’ll be my first “new” JRPG on this thing and I can’t wait.

As someone who doesn't have a PC worth gaming on, and with no intent to sit at a desk more than I have to (I already do that 9-10 hours a day), the Steam Deck is a great way to get access to a library that would otherwise not be looked at. With a good internet connection at home Game Pass works very well for me, which is the icing on the top.

The Pro looks interesting but I kinda can’t do without RDNA2 or better at this point. Should be amazing for emulation though, whichever one you go for.

Mainly will be used for higher end emulation and Indies. Steam deck will purely just be for my steam library bigger hitters.

That’s basically what I was looking at. That OLED screen should be amazing for things like PSP and 2D games. Hope you get it soon, want to hear some impressions!

Yeah I don't want to shit this thread up with non deck talk so will probably stick some thoughts in the retro thread once it's in hand and given it a test drive.

I think it’ll be fine, though I’m no mod; these competitor handhelds and how they run SteamOS/HoloISO will almost certainly be of interest to those in the market for a handheld PC.
Myself, I’m happy with my Deck but a nice device with a good dpad for fighting and other similar games would be very useful.

Oled screen and x2 Res, they should look great. I'm hoping some of my favourite ps2 games work ok as well. Capcom Vs Snk 2 for instance.

Remember that you’ll have access to the arcade version too, which will likely give you better visual quality in a game like CVS2, I remember that being quite flickery on PS2.
Also, online with Fightcade!

Oh yeah, sorry. Meant to mention that. I've only very briefly tried it in fairness. It's certainly playable, but I didn't really dig deep enough to see if a solid 60FPS is achievable. It runs at 60 for a while, but drops to the 40s or even 30s sometimes. Would be so nice if you could just skip windows and run it in steam os with a 40FPS lock and that glorious performance overlay A locked 30 should definitely be doable, though. Just got a new SD card, so I'll take another look at it this weekend.

I find myself avoid the frame rate limiter where possible due to the input lag it introduces. There are a few games where it's necessary to remove stuttering, but I've so far found most games either run fine uncapped, or have their own internal limiter with lower latency. I'm pretty much exclusively playing it at home on the sofa tethered to a giant power bank so battery life isn't much of a priority.

Just did about two hours of Metal Gear Solid, not saving etc as trying to get the best rating I can at the end as per any Metal Gear Solid playthrough.
Steam Deck mid game decided to do an update as I was playing so lost all progress.
What the fuck.

OK a mate has told me emulators have save states so have worked out how to use that so doing that every few seconds now. Gonna skip all cutscenes and I dare say I'll be back to where I was within 20 minutes.

I started New Vegas on the deck. I'd dearly like to try it with some mods, but not enough to go through the hassle of trying to install them on Linux.
The in-game Xbox 360 controller gamepad configuration is fine, absolutely fine, but for the sake of tinkering I adapted a community controller setting. The right trackpad is for mouse look (with gyro activated when the left-trigger aims down the sight). The left trackpad has a radial menu set up for quick load and quick save. Pip-boy and VATS buttons are on L4 and R4 ie the paddle buttons on the back. I can't decide if that's an improvement or trying to solve a problem that wasn't there, but I do like the access to quick load and save for a game with a reputation of crashing.
(I don't know about anyone else, but I've always felt the paddle buttons on the back to be stiff and cheap feeling. It turns out I'm not pressing the correct part of the button - they feel much better when pressed closer to the crease of the controller grips.)

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of paddle buttons generally, but they are pleasing to idly fiddle with while playing games once I have disabled any bindings.

Fucking dogshit.

The back buttons are really useful for Spider-Man, for some reason pressing y and b together to do the finishers doesn’t always register. Same with doing a quick grab while swinging, useful for pigeon catching.

Is it likely that buying a 64GB model be problematic with regards to OS sizes / Valve support in the future? I have a Series X and Switch. I'm thinking about a Steamdeck to make play primarily indie / smaller games that are only on Steam. No AAA titles, no emulators or anything like that. (I also want to play Gamepass PC titles eventually.) I can't stress enough that it'll be a secondary or even tertiary platform. Occasional use. The 64Gb with a 512gb SD card seems to be the one to go for, as it's the cheapest option. (I used to use a cloud PC service with 256gb and it wasn't enough storage, so I'll need an SD card for sure.) But could that lack of space for the OS be a problem in the future if, for some reason, the OS or whatever gets too big? Maybe that's a silly question. I'm not a PC user, I'm not a tweaker or a modifier so I don't know how this stuff works.
EDIT
On that note, I really am plug-and-play kind of guy. I hate fiddling to get things working. Should I be wary of the machine because of that?

I doubt that Valve will deliberately make the OS footprint greater than the storage of the base model. I have the 512 model but with hindsight the 64 + SD card would have been ok for my use. I would say that if you stick to downloading only ‘verified’ games from the steam store, you might still need to do a tiny bit of playing with settings, whether to change the screen refresh rate if the game has choppy performance, or choose a controller profile if there isn’t a controller configuration provided by the game dev (which shouldn't happen but you never know). There will be plenty indie titles that ought to be verified and work straight away without any tinkering, but Valve can't verify every game on the platform. If there's a game you want to try but Valve haven't tested it yet, you could check out ProtonDB: www.protondb.com/ Neither of those are as scary as they sound, because both options are just a few button presses away thanks to a (mostly) well designed user interface. I recommend watching some vids on YouTube to put your mind at rest on that front. If you watch these and think it’s too much of a faff then the steam deck might not be for you. youtu.be/_kwF2FDINlIyoutu.be/d2YawKnfPP4

There are places, such as the first landing zone in EDZ, where the baseline framerate is more like 50fps all the time. And I can't understand if it's a CPU problem (my 5500U has a fairly low base clock, though it can boost up quite a bit), lack of memory (only 8GB), or simply bad optimization.

idgafI'm a tinkerer but I've barely tinkered with the Deck tbh. I don't even bother with the 40Hz mode everyone in here goes on about. 60 FPS is just way better imo and the added battery drain is worth it. So yeah, it's very plug and play. I've used an alternative control scheme for one game with Steam's controller options, but otherwise I've just gone default. Come to think of it, I don't even spend time in the video settings, which is the mandatory starting place for big rig PC gaming. Gotta turn up that sweet anti-aliasing etc etc. Here the devs have usually found a sweet spot between fidelity and performance, so away you go.
