I'm still umming and ahhing over whether I'll buy one when I get my email in 2 years time. I probably should as I don't have anything like a gaming PC, so it's not like it'll be redundant. It's just whether I'll have time to use it. Also in the back of my mind is if a new version will be on the horizon by the time it comes round to me. Right, but deck 2 is going to face the exact same pre-order cycle probably. Things being on the horizon means jack shit these days.

Was this an email update? My reserve is from September 2021 so I'm curious. No, I didn't receive an email. It has just been updated on Steam. If you have a reservation and go onto the Steam Deck store page, it will show you the estimate. Previously, it just vaguely said "After Q3" and the third party delivery estimates were giving me around about this time next year. Ah right, yeah mine now says between July and September this year. Gonna have to make the decision sooner than I thought.

Also, I think deck 2 is going to be a scalpers wet dream. I bet they already are making steam accounts like crazy with one $2 game purchased so they’ll be able to pre-order this time around.

And last, they didn’t expect so many people to go for the high end model, so I also bet the next one is going to be $100 more for every level they offer.

I'm hoping they add some unknown caveat like amount of hours active to sniff out scalpers. For example, if you've bought just one cheap game and not installed and played it, or not been active in steam at all apart from the game purchase.

The only thing with that, like with this one, is that then doesn't help generate new steam users.

Valve have said that everyone who has a current reservation will get it by the end of the year, so that’s nice. Apparently they’re close to being able to buy one instead of queueing.

Finally swapped out the fan today, confirmed the old one was a delta. Was a piece of piss, probably even easier than any laptop I’ve had. A little bit of a heart flutter moment when it took a little while to switch back on, but there’s a definite difference in noise, it now sounds like a fan instead of having a slight whine to it, like the forum after ecosse.

Are you using crankshaft for the Proton version management stuff? Have you seen any performance or compatibility benefit to messing with different Proton GE versions? Started using the Proton version management plugin. Allowed me to get Rebel Galaxy Outlaw running without having to resort to desktop mode

Just got my purchase within 3 days email. Decisions. I've all the other systems including a PC with decent components apart from a wheezing GTX 970. It's the steam deck or a new graphics card... Buying a card means I get reamed price wise whereas the Deck is great value. But I hardly use my Switch so why would I buy this. Gahhh I bought it. As someone pointed out, I can get most of my money back if I don't get on with it. Now to perv on my shipping updates.

Shipping updates were non-existent for me... It's pretty much pointless even checking. Got an email from parcelforce in the early hours of the morning to say it'd be delivered on Tuesday, then another one to say it's out for delivery today. Just expect it at some point a week after you've ordered it.
Just set it up and had a quick poke around a couple of games. Seems decent so far, but I can see that fan noise annoying me. Had to move it downstairs to charge and install a few bigger games.
I'll probably give it a few weeks weeks and sell it on if I'm not using it much. Although arriving the day after I've started XC3 probably isn't going to do it any favours...

In terms of fan noise, if you limit the TDP in games to about 11W (which is the point of diminishing returns anyway) then you’ll get very little fan noise in general. I’ve found it only really spools up if it’s caning the CPU a lot as it boosts up and gets hot. Mostly you’ll find yourself GPU limited though and at those power levels the fan doesn’t get too bolshy.
It’s well worth tinkering with the power options, you can really squeeze a lot out of it in older games. Something like Crimsonland (which handles fantastically well on the built in controls) is 60fps on the minimum 3W setting and it’s very quiet and cool as a result. Something like 6 and a half hours battery too. In general PS3 stuff will be happy running at 60 at 7W and for PS4 era games you’re looking at 11, possibly more if you want to push it hard.
Remember that turning down resolution is an option in many games. I played a bunch of Days Gone at 70% scaling and it was hard to tell because the game’s built in AA system is so damn blurry anyway! As a result it was happy enough at 40fps without going too crazy in terms of heat and played very nicely.

Where possible it’s also worth setting the actual res to a lower figure (like 1024x600) and letting the Deck’s built in FSR bump it to native - it’s usually a better picture and better performance that way than scaling in-game, although it also could impact the game UI more than in-game scaling, so ymmv

I’m the other way around, if it’s not pulling the full 23 watts I start looking for options to turn on. I agree with the lower res + fsr though, but mainly to get to 60fps.

I’m not a fan of FSR because I don’t like the sharpening and I don’t think it looks good with it at 0 from what I’ve tried. I prefer to let the game handle it and then I get full resolution HUD etc.

ah, was wondering why some games I'd installed from Origin looked like the text was from a late '90s game ... I had Half Rate Shading on by default. Turned it off with Maddern 22 and STAR WARS: Sqaudrons and now they look great again

I just discovered desktop mode lol. I thought I'd have to jump through hoops to get emulators on here, HA! I love this thing! Wipeout here I come I know 2097 is a better game anyway, but I was disappointed that Wipeout Fusion doesn't run at a playable rate on the Deck. Anything later than PSX seems to be really hit or miss (using RPCS3 via Emudeck).

Wip3out for me all day, specifically the Special Edition which remasters some of the earlier tracks for the best flying model. Anti-grav racing hasn’t been bettered since IMO.
BallisticNG is a strong homage to Wipeout and is verified for the deck. Recommended by me, but it has some difficulty spikes by mid-game.

I don't think I ever played Wip3out back in the day. I will check it out - thanks!
Also BallisticNG once I clear my pleasingly large backlog of games on the deck.

That reminds me I still need to buy Pacer, which is basically a Wipeout successor. Has anyone tried this on the Deck? youtu.be/n2RgiarTDrQ

So how does emudeck work, just run the script or do you need to provide firmware bin files and stuff?

Just drop into desktop mode and run it by the sound of it. Not sure why I'm answering as I haven't gotten around to trying it yet!
Going to plug into my office dock later and load the SD card up with ROMs!

Has anyone tried this on the Deck? youtu.be/n2RgiarTDrQI backed Pacer when it was Formula Fusion on Kickstarter, so I have it in my Steam library. I had completely forgotten about it, I’ll give it another go on the deck soon.

Wip3out doesn't play nicely with Duckstation or Beetle for me. The former won't even load the game and the latter crashes when I reach a certain point in the race, presumably when a particular effect is triggered.

BallisticNG is fucking miles better than any other Wipeout imitator.
There's also about a billion custom tracks and ships on the steam workshop.

Pacer mini-review, after a couple of quick races:
* Steam deck verified
* Graphics settings default to ‘very high’. I didn’t change that but got fluctuating fps ranging 38-55fps at 15W TDP. However it seems to lock in well to 40hz/40fps with barely any dips, at 11W TDP. I could tweak more but would be happy with that.
* The UI isn’t scaled well to the deck’s screen size and resolution. It’s not a deal-breaker, however.
* Gameplay is like a modern Wipeout. You can decide what type of weapons to choose, eg disrupting, long range. There is a KERS boost meter which builds up over time. Unlike Wipeout 3 and BallisticNG, it doesn’t appear to be intertwined with the shield and health, so there is little risk to using it when available.
* Too early to give a verdict. I think prefer BallisticNG but that game gets quite difficult in places, some of the time trial goals take a lot of practice.
