Wait... This year or last year? Definitely a bit optimistic if it was this year.

I’ve got a new fan for mine coming today from ifixit. I honestly don’t have much of an issue with the fan noise as it is, even though I have one of the older fans with the slight whine, it’s more an experiment to see how easy it is to repair it all. Given this a shot yet? Every time I check the site these are sold out :/

It arrived yesterday but haven’t cracked it open yet. Probably this weekend.

Damn, mine’s changed from Q3 to after Q3. That’s a bummer

You will receive an email and Steam will notify you from within the app once it's available to order.

Anyone using any of the Steam Deck plugin managers? I've got crankshaft.space/ running and using the ProtonDB plugin to check status of games in my library. There is at least one other Plugin manager that seems to have a couple of extra plugins plugins.deckbrew.xyz/, but I don't mess around with settings enough to justify a switch

Are you using crankshaft for the Proton version management stuff? Have you seen any performance or compatibility benefit to messing with different Proton GE versions?

Not yet, although that was the plan. I couldn’t get it to add any options under the properties menu. At the moment I either use experimental or v7, so any benefit in juggling multiple versions isn’t worth the effort

I use protonup for handling GE. It’s definitely better for several games, especially ones with video. Even Experimental doesn’t quite fix all the video issues.

A lot of games marked as unsupported are marked so because the video codecs don’t work for pre-recorded cut scenes and the like. Using regular or experimental proton may just result in a weird color test screen showing. It’s not a universal rule though and Valve have fixed a load already.

Ah ok - makes sense. So I guess it's only worth messing with if you come across games which haven't specifically been patched in the latest stable Proton version Valve is using.

Tbh in general I’ve found GE is a little smoother and faster all around. There are a small handful of games where the opposite is true, but they’ve been few and far between for me.

Just got my purchase within 3 days email.
Decisions.
I've all the other systems including a PC with decent components apart from a wheezing GTX 970. It's the steam deck or a new graphics card... Buying a card means I get reamed price wise whereas the Deck is great value. But I hardly use my Switch so why would I buy this. Gahhh

It's got to the point that I'll be using the deck over the winter to save on electric compared to running my pc with single monitor or triple.

In fairness GPU prices are somewhere towards being sensible again. Tricky call, though. I don't use my switch much, but at the same time I don't use my PC much as I've usually had enough of that space due to WFH.

Well, the gpu apocalypse is only scheduled for when the 4000 range starts shipping, and you’re probably not going to sell the deck at a loss if you end up not using it that much.

What games do you like to play? If it's gorgeous AAA games like Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, etc, then I'd go for the GPU. If you play a lot of 2D or indie games, I'd opt for Deck. If both, then flip a coin.

That's not to say the Deck can't run Cyberpunk and Elden Ring - but they do feel like gimped experiences on a 6 inch screen.

I'm still umming and ahhing over whether I'll buy one when I get my email in 2 years time. I probably should as I don't have anything like a gaming PC, so it's not like it'll be redundant. It's just whether I'll have time to use it.
Also in the back of my mind is if a new version will be on the horizon by the time it comes round to me.

I'd be surprised if there is another version until 2024/25 at the earliest. I would say the immediacy of it does make it a lot easier to play games. Less mental effort flicking it on than booting up a PC and sitting in front of monitor or whatver.

Just had an update on my "After Q3" delivery estimate (from a Feb 2022 reserve). Now saying that it will be Q4. A pleasant surprise, as I really was expecting to wait until 2023.
The sensible part of me is saying that I really shouldn't bother getting one, as I have enough gaming devices already, be they portable or not (a PC packing a 2080 Super, a PS5, a Switch and a recently purchased laptop with a 3060). I'm going to order it though aren't I?

If you travel a lot for work or are otherwise on buses or trains for any reason, I highly recommend it. It's definitely been worth the extra space in my bag. I got it on the same day as I was going down to London for work and it worked extremely well; battery life doesn't matter with modern trains having decent quality plugs in the seats (not on the wall anymore) and the controls are comfortable enough that it really does suck you in after a little while, especially if you have decent earphones in.

It has just been updated on Steam. If you have a reservation and go onto the Steam Deck store page, it will show you the estimate. Previously, it just vaguely said "After Q3" and the third party delivery estimates were giving me around about this time next year.
