The refresh rate change is now in stable, along with the improved fan curve. Go 40hz/40fps lock and never go back imo.

Managed to install both GOG Galaxy and EA Origin only to find that I cannot add the installed apps to the Steam Library due to not being able to find them because of the hidden folder structure of the Deck...
Do I need to learn some serious Linuxy hackery to get this thing working properly without just installing Windows and calling SteamOS a bad idea? Again happy with Steam stuff that works but as someone who prioritised GOG over Steam this is more of a pain than it should be...

Use Heroic Launcher instead for GOG stuff - heroicgameslauncher.com/ - works better than the Windows clients running under Proton.

I did go back to Heroic after that, just a shame I lose my GOG cloud saves, not sure about Epic. Not played too heavily with the games yet, only tried Witcher 3 and Phoenix Point so far on GOG.
Still would like to figure out Origin for Mass Effects and Dragon Ages (and Crysis games I suppose too).

Got Heroic and the Heroic Bash Launcher working now, had a wobble with versions and it started working after I got the 2.3.7 beta.
Still using official EGS launcher for my Epic library, bit slow but download management etc is a bit better. One disadvantage compare to having it added to steam library via the bash launcher is that you have to manually change the controller config per game.

Maybe hold out for a GOGdeck release?

I don’t think it should come as a huge surprise that the Steam deck is ‘working properly’ when you use Steam. That was more of a caveat that it was doing what it's main selling point while also being a major pain in the arse for other things you would expect from having used previous Windows handhelds (and this comes from someone who only ever had a low powered Atom based handheld with limited storage). I still remain unconvinced by SteamOS and any actual benefits, but at the same the my wife has grabbed the device to use more and is used to that environment...

Maybe hold out for a GOGdeck release? Or have a system where you don't need shell commands to be able to see SD cards outside of Steam and other user unfriendly stuff? See again, being able to see basic folders that it installs stuff to. Maybe not quite as bad as Windows Store's horrible folder nonsense but not too far off...

The main benefits of SteamOS is that they can have kernel level improvements to performance and power draw that are impossible to do in Windows, or involve hacky workarounds (like on the fly performance and power adjustments). That we have proper Windows drivers for everything now but Proton is still faster in most cases is testament to that.

Yeah, I just need the time to figure out the quirks well enough to be able to use it to my liking. I am all for avoiding Windows if I can do it in a user friendly but still customisable way. The SD card thing is annoying as I had planned to use that for emulators and they can't actually see it without messing around with console commands etc. And that had been one of my planned primary uses of the system. I also know that even if I get dualboot the SD card format won't be usable easily in both OS as it is one Windows doesn't natively support so will still have issues.

Mine got delivered today, downloaded a few things to try and got cramp in my hand already after an hour on it. Is it the weight or grip position you think does that? Compared to my Switch I find it a lot more comfy …. Unless I use the back grip buttons. They are ok for occasional use but I wouldn’t map to a frequent command

Don't know if it's because my right index finger is a little mishaped after breaking it some years ago, hopefully will get used to it over the weekend. Seemed to be using a finger each for R1 and R2.
I never actually used a switch to compare.

I still can’t work out how to use the estimator. Don't worry, the SD is easier to use than the estimator.

My deck got delivered yesterday, 11 months to the day of the reservation window opening.
First impressions:
* The carry case is massive! * Xbox Cloud Gaming, once set up, is better than I thought it would be. Latency is well within the tolerable range. My only grumble is I would like the resolution to be bumped up a little, it's clearly not 720p. I will be streaming Game Pass a lot. * SteamOS, at this point, is mostly a pleasure to use. Being able to change TDP, refresh rate and frame-limiting options so quickly and easily is the future. * It's been a while since I've used a Steam Controller, but it didn't take long to remember the mix of joy and frustration in dabbling with control schemes for games. Choice paralysis makes me just want to go for the default.

Yeah, the case is huge and dare I say it... pretty uncool. To the point I've found myself looking for something else.
And those control schemes/settings are an absolute joy and pain all rolled into one. I'm playing Singularity now (great game!) and it has no gamepad controls at all. SteamOS automatically applied a scheme made by someone and it's mostly excellent, but the game keeps showing kbm prompts and some screens are really awkward to use (weapon lockers). Still, it's great Valve has managed to create something so versatile and configurable to make sure you can get anything to run more or less well.

FFVIIR is available on Steam since yesterday and SD verified, so I just had to get it (again) like the fool that I am. It’s not a perfect 40, but close enough and I just might complete it this time.
Only 720p though, not that it makes any difference, but PIXELS GOING TO WASTE.

Naturally I’ve spent more time tinkering than playing games on this so far.
I got Championship Manager 01/02 running with the current squads, which was an afternoon’s worth of trial and error.
Boilr is a handy tool for loading non-steam games from other launchers. I had a heap of itch.io titles from the Ukraine humble bundle a few months back - Boilr did a lot of the heavy lifting to slot them nicely into Steam.

Might have to check boilr out as hadn't heard of it. Not been on my Deck for a few weeks as distracted by Switch and PS5 stuff.

Thought this was pretty cool.
tldr: use your Steamdeck as a Bluetooth speaker, so if you plug your headphones in you can have game audio + whatever you send to it from your phone automatically mixed. Some games I play while listening to podcasts, so it’s pretty handy for that.

I haven’t had the urge to tinker, thankfully. I installed Heroic and Witcher 3 that I have from GOG but that’s it.
The SD is pretty mundane, stuff just works for the most part, I haven’t simply played this many games in ages.
