The Steam Deck isnât really all about power and AAA anyway, itâs fundamentally about hardware design and UI tweaks to make games playable on a smaller screen. The Ayas lacking a touchpad will render a whole bunch of m/kb situations annoying. Ever tried to navigate Windows or an RTS using mouse emulation on an analogue stick? Ugh.

From my POV the Deck is in the console ballpark between Switch and Xbox / PS.
The pricing seems to put the Aya Neo as a gaming laptop/PC equivalent in a different form factor, as much as I'd like the extra power I'd probably go for a Deck + a PS5 over this and avoid the faff on non-standard Windows gaming

So...
When my SD arrives, bearing in mind that it seems the last Windows drivers have been released (audio) and Valve still haven't allowed dual-booting, is there any reason for me not to just remove SteamOS and start with Windows for the full gamut of compatibility or do I need to be a bit more patient?
Note that I managed fine on Windows on my old Linux Vision with much less controls. I don't quite see the benefit of using SteamOS for a 'lesser experience'. I have heard about some people installing Windows on the SD but that sounds like performance issues waiting to happen...
Edit - I have a bunch of GOG/Epic games as well as Origin, Uplay and MS Store games as well as a desire to be able to use decent standalone emulators (avoiding Retroarch at all costs)

As far as I'm aware (don't have a Deck), the Windows experience is just poor all round and not just because of driver issues. SteamOS is just better for the Deck. Also, performance seems to be often bad under Windows, with the odd exception. Valve have managed to eek out every possible performance gain, which you lose when moving to Windows.
Nothing stops you going purely Windows if you want though.
As I understand it, most stores have ways to get them to work under Linux (not sure about MS Store). Emulation is also supposedly very good under Linux.
Having said that, I've tried Linux a couple of times on my computer and never seem to be able to get any games working.

Yeah, installing Windows really does seem to be the "lesser experience" in this case. Something I'll only try out for a bit of Destiny 2 when they've sorted out dual boot.

Is it as simple as installing windows on a sd card and dual booting when needed?

Is it as simple as installing windows on a sd card and dual booting when needed? I have heard that you can do it that way (as Valve haven't allowed normal dual boot options). Apparently my Deck has arrived at home (as long as it isn't an empty box ..) Just got to finish work...

In-OS supported dual boot is allegedly coming to beta pretty soon. At the moment you have to either force a boot manager or do boot selection every time, maybe some other options but theyâre not elegant.

I might be patient So far just updated the bios and started installing a few things. Probably try a few simple Steam things first then look into the more compatible Protons for things like the Japanese games FMV issues etc.

Now playing Alan Wake on the SD. It's something quite special, isn't it?

I will, sometime. Though Control's narrative is a nonsensical load of bollocks, and this has been excellent so far.

Tried a few Steam games on the Deck so far, although with work getting in the way and the wife stealing it for Dorfromantik I haven't had too much of a fiddle outside of that area yet.
Trying to get GOG (still got Epic to try too) working with the Heroic launcher either failed or my game list was so big it was just going slowly finding my games...
And for emulators finding out that the SD card is inaccessible by default to anything other than Steam is annoying (I wouldn't have had either of these hassles on Windows...).
Not sure what the 'toughest' game to run I have tried yet is though, mostly been trying older stiff like Dead Rising, Last Remnant, Fallout:NV and FFXIII so far.
Machine feels quite comfortable though. And I do need to look at per game settings to see if I can improve battery life a bit as it isn't great. Got a week off for half term so probably a good chance to have a proper fiddle.

Trouble with Heroic for GOG games is that I canât see how many hours Iâve been failing to kill one of the big bosses :-D

I will have to look into Lutris and see if that is a better option. Only went for Heroic as it seemed the popular option. Thanks.

I use Heroic for GOG as I had trouble getting larger games to install via Lutris. It's a shame as Lutris allows you to add Steam shortcuts, so that they appear in your library

You can add heroic games to steam with this tool github.com/redromnon/HeroicBashLauncherHeroic is a bit of a faff as it has / had a bug which meant it wouldnât create the required prefix folder unless you manually switch to wine and back, but I think thatâs fixed in the latest version emudeck is really cool for getting roms into steam (again had a bit of a faff finding the needed bios for some systems but all working nicely now) Iâm totally in love with my steamdeck. Itâs amazing and is allowing me to play so many games Iâd never get round to otherwise (in bed no less)

Creating the dir using the touchscreen was NOT fun. In general, touchscreen support needs a lot of work.

My brief attempt at Heroic for GOG got stuck at 'discovering games' or somesuch. Was taking a while but only have it five minutes or so.
Emulators are a must to get working too, even if it seems like I have to use shell commands to access the SD card in them for some stupid reason.
My Linx Vision was slow and clunky but it was a lot easier to use.

I didnât have to create folders manually, I installed wine then switched the game to use it, which created the folder. I then switched back to Proton Not sure whatâs showing up in Flathub but I can see the version thatâs meant to contain the fix is up on GitHub Faffing with heroic and emulators aside, Iâve found the core steam experience flawless (I was actually cursing myself for getting drawn into tinkering instead of just playing games)

Well, I looked at the log when the game I installed through Heroic wouldnât start and it complained about a missing file, I went to look for it and the folder wasnât there so I got to creating it and it worked after that.

Probably a Heroic update that broke. Annoying as having Heroic games in the steam library with proper cover art is neat

Ifixit has their Steam Deck page up. The not quieter but less whiny fan immediately sold out of course.
