This is a bit good isn't it! Mine arrived yesterday and I've spent the evening digging through my old Steam list to see what works. After years without a gaming PC I can see this being a great way to pick up on various games I've missed over the years!
I also spent a bit of time getting Epic Games working - which wasn't too painful even with my lack of ability. I'm glad now I've been diligently picking up all the free games as the few I've tried so far seem to work quite well!
I can see this revitalising my gaming time in a similar way to how the Switch managed - now with a wife and baby I struggle a bit to find the time.

Persona 4 seems to have been verified finally! The checkmydeck site from a few pages back is quite handy for sorting by date.

I've been playing some Resident Evil 3 which is unsupported but plays fine. 40 fps, almost locked, dips negligible. The fan was rather loud, so lowered the TDP of the CPU to 10 W, little to no difference in performance, much quieter.
The various settings they offer on this are lovely.

Yeah, all this awesome in the palm of your hand is magic. Valve done us a good thing there, not only hardware- (and price-) wise, but with software especially.
Also, I didn't stick to the 10W power envelope for RE3 until the end after all. I had to set it to 12W to get smooth perf in the final sections and the fan was definitely not quiet.
The gf is not a fan of the deck's fan whine, she much prefers me using the switch. Too bad for everyone I won't be doing much of that any more.

This. It’s an absolute game changer and it should really become a standard target, including next gen consoles. 30fps should be dead.

So why is 40hz so good exactly? Is it just a sweet spot or something.

So why is 40hz so good exactly? Is it just a sweet spot or something. Pretty much, yeah. From a pure feel perspective it’s nice and smooth, from an input perspective it’s the exact midpoint between 30 and 60 (frame rate timing means 45 isn’t the center there) and it fits nicely into 120hz. But it also requires way less grunt than 60 so you can have a nice feeling game with high res and new sparklies easier.

So why is 40hz so good exactly? Is it just a sweet spot or something. It has to do with frame times, so the amount of time you have to wait for the next frame. If you look at 30/60/120hz each frame takes 33/16/8ms. 40hz gives you 25ms. So although it’s only 10hz more than 30,it sits exactly at the midpoint between 30 and 60hz in terms of responsiveness. And while we’re here, it’s also why 240 and 360hz monitors are kind of dumb, because the amount of resources required to only shave 4 and then 2 extra ms of your frametimes are ridiculous. Law of diminishing returns and all that.

Awesome, seems like a no brainer for the next switch. Is this a recent thing or have people been screaming about it for ages?

Fairly recent. It’s only in the age of 120hz monitors and VRR it got noticed as a better performance target than just 30 vs 60.
See the Ratchet and Clank mode as an example.

Yeah, before DF talked about the 40hz mode in Ratchet I had never even considered it or heard anything about it.

Also, in a handheld, you get better battery life at 40 than you would at 60.

Yeah, before DF talked about the 40hz mode in Ratchet I had never even considered it or heard anything about it. This. They found a way to turn on all the ray tracing shinies coupled with a high res and framerate that appears smooth.

Grr. Anyone else ran into Wi-Fi power saving issues? I thought it was my router but looks like a known issue steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/0/3186864655201787405/Lost a couple of hours stats and achievements out of sync on one game. So nothing major. Although I think this was also killing my downloads in Heroic/Lutris

Funny you should mention that, I just got wifi issues this morning. A restart fixed them, though. Someone mentioned this before and I see this as a problem as well, that you have to keep it on for downloads to work. Sleep will obviously interrupt everything, but it won't even turn off the screen, which can be a problem if you need to dl stuff on battery.

Just brought RE7+8 Beyond steel sky. Fucking loving this Does Beyond A Steel Sky run ok? Still listed as unverified but one I’m very keen to pick up for deck Edit: just seen the devs have specifically updated it to play nice with deck in patch notes so looks positive. store.steampowered.com/news/app/1146310/view/3123812991768478119

Looks like I m about 20 seconds off the rtreserve number in today's batch. Maybe this Thursday...
How fast does the Deck actually charge to full? As my biggest concern remains the small battery.

Under an hour to 80% from near empty and then it slows down to a trickle charge, in my experience.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully have my order up on Thursday. Not sure what I am going to play on it first but older games and emulation are two of my goals (and of course to see just what you can push onto it playably). Hoping installing emulators isn't going to be a pain, especially as I want to avoid using Retroarch.

Emulators are easy. Emudeck or Retrodeck are practically one-click and done. They do use Retroarch for the older consoles out of convenience, but working around that is easy enough, there’s a ton of guides out there.

Had a weird Bluetooth issue. If you turn Bluetooth off in desktop mode the setting in Steam OS does nothing, but also doesn’t tell you it’s off.

How are the trackpads? Found them useful for mouse movement uses?
