Weird, irrespective of whether he should have done a violence, a slap is better than a punch as it doesn't hurt your hand, and he had good body control while doing it, making sure not to telegraph any of it.

To me it seemed like a performative slap, to publicly show his displeasure, stand up for his wife and to stop him talking, rather than one intended to cause any actual damage. I've no doubt he could have decked him if he really wanted to.

If you freeze frame the slap you can see Rock's head go back and to the left.

He should have gone old-school and used a glove. 'Sir, you are a blackguard and a bully. I demand satisfaction!'

There’s no excuse for Smith’s behavior. If the video isn’t faked, he didn’t do it to defend his wife’s honor. He did it because he decided he had to make a performance to maintain his position in the relationship with his wife
Fuck the guy.

Real or staged, it's irrelevant. My takeaway from all this is that it's ok to hit people who tell bad jokes. Totally deserved a slap but should have been done after the show. Well, no.

I suspect some people don't want to think that this is a part of Will Smith's character, hence the 'surely it's a bit' thing. He's pretty much curated a character of positivity and affability over the years, so it's more shocking in a way.
I'd no idea about his private life before this thread, but all that stuff with his marriage and his status within that relationship explains why he might be extra sensitive/on the edge.

I recall the footage of him slapping someone in a parking lot (I believe it was a fan that had irritated him and the footage was on a mobile phone) going alongside the narrative of how this would be really damaging to the carefully created persona they have built of "nice guy Will". So 3 times he has been caught slapping or punching people in the face now, so I guess it likes doing it.

It does seem kind of insane how much coverage all this got. Grauniad even had a bit up about male violence.

The worst part is that this took all the focus away from how hot Timotheeeeee was last night.

I think everyone knows it says more about Will’s state of mind than anything else. Guy needs a hug.

It’s times like this I think ‘If it was The Rock up there would Will have stepped up …’ To be fair the Rock doesn't strike me as the type to make a joke like that to begin with, so... Although again, I might be wrong

If it only had been Gervais... Then the "it's staged" would have made sense. Will would be the hero of the people, and Gervais could go on a media tour complaining about "you can't even joke about people's medical conditions anymore!"

If Jada’s this upset about being a smoking hot and incredibly rich bald woman, wait until someone explains to her about ageing and death.
If only I could wave a wand and give everyone in that room an actual debilitating disease.

Yeah, maybe you could have told Robin Williams and countless other celebrities that suffer from depression and addiction, to just be happy with all their wealth instead.

If Jada’s this upset about being a smoking hot and incredibly rich bald woman, wait until someone explains to her about ageing and death. If only I could wave a wand and give everyone in that room an actual debilitating disease. You cannot possibly know another person's state of mind. So what if it's not debilitating, does that mean it's unreasonable for her to be insulted if someone brings attention to it in that way? What if she's been hearing BS about it for years for all we know, is that okay because it's "just a joke bro"? Imagine you had, say, a very slight limp after an accident. It's not debilitating, there's nothing you could do before that you can't do now, you live your life fine... Except there's always this one random douche that shoots you a disapproving look, or a crass comment, or a bad joke about it. You're really telling me that, at some point, you wouldn't start getting testy about it, even in the context of a good-natured joke?
