But why stage it, if it's irreversibly stupid and not obviously staged? It looked like stage combat. It’s literally the first thing I thought when I saw it before all the context around it. It does but what would the point of it be? And Chris Rock's reaction afterwards definitely isn't fake. I've seen him act.

Well in my armchair analysis this is a clear case of misdirected anger.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't staged. Certainly worked, Will SMith's new film won't be short of publicity now.

User Lukus, that photo is out of date. I'd ask you to find one that features my Karate badges and nunchucks I have hanging on my wall.
But, seriously, of the three people I've punched for taking the piss out of my disability - all 3 were people I knew, who had been told where the boundaries are. I wouldn't really start on a stranger because they don't know you - but there is a line and sometimes you just see red - especially when it's people you know and would hope respect the boundaries.

I think it might have been a planned bit that Big Willy took a bit too seriously.
His yelling afterwards was probably not planned.
Whilst it takes away from the winners of the Oscars, it's also the only thing that's made me aware they were really happening. Didn't even realise they were on, it's fallen off my cultural radar entirely.

"I got in one little fight about my wife's lost hair" is the best thing I've seen so far. 🎶"Got on stage and slapped the shit out of a Rock live on air"...🎶

So violence and assault are perfectly acceptable as long as the recipient of said violence deserved it for talking out of turn. Good to know. Mrs Hermit better not be making fat jokes later.

Will is pretty hench and he’s had training for Ali and whatnot. I would expect that even an open handed clap from him would spin you around like biff tannen.

Maybe the same sense of restraint that would have kept some of us from slapping the guy at all managed to go "Hey, maybe don't knock him out completely" at the last second?

You can punch/slap with a huge variation in power. Unless your geefe of course, he always goes for the kill.

Thread needs a 'staged? Yes or No' poll added.

It didn't look fake to me at all, just a bit weak. His feet are planted wrong and he ends up way too close

FWIW I’m not quite saying I think it’s staged, but that I’m finding it hard to believe it isn’t.

Definitely not staged. It was an open hand slap but he put some real snap into it. Rock didn’t sell it but it definitely hurt. He would have needed a sit down after.
It could have all gone wrong - if it landed on his ear he could have done some irreversible damage.

In any case if his goal was to defend his wife's honour he's done a good job of making people aware of her infidelity. She seems shameless

It's weird as fuck but I can definitely see how Smith being the butt of so many jokes about his wife over the last few years sending him a bit crazy. That and she seems a bit of a nightmare. Wouldn't be surprised if he got a "you're really going to sit there and let him say that about me" look from her. Especially as he seemed to be laughing at it.

If nothing else I’m not sure how a terrible joke about a completely culturally irrelevant joke film from over 20 years ago, poking fun at a women who’s also been bald for about 20 years, made the cut for the highest profile gig a stand-up can get.

If it was staged it's the best I've seen Will Smith act as he genuinely looked very angry when he was shouting back at Chris!

No way it's staged, there's an unsettling level of awkwardness and embarrassment to the whole thing that only real life could ever deliver. Smith will be getting the shame shivers every time he looks at that Oscar on his mantelpiece.
If it's staged then Smith and Rock deserve nominations for next year.

Just so you know, my missus just told me if she was going bald and some guy took the piss, she'd fully expect me to Welcome Ta Earth him.
She's totally Camp Smith.

But if no one thinks it's staged, then it may as well not be. This makes no sense to me. The whole point of staging anything is that people think it’s real. Again I’m not some conspiracy nut, and again I’m not strictly saying I think it is staged. But the idea that an industry that is entirely based on faking stuff for entertainment wouldn’t or couldn’t possibly fake stuff for entertainment is a bit odd.

I literally wouldn't believe it was staged even if they now try to claim it was staged. Like what was the fucking point.
"I've got an idea. You make personal jokes about my wife, then I'll get up and smack the shit out of you on stage and swear like a sailor on live TV and ruin the night for me and everyone else while reminding everyone that my wife cheats on me without shame."
