Yep, that's what I figured. They were happy to let it happen to generate attention but when the backlash came, they turned on him. And they wonder why nobody cares about their show.

I'll wait to see what the guys over at Hello! Magazine have to say about this before I nail my colours to the mast on this one. Things are certainly heating up though.

Will Smith? No, but Chris Rock.
Discuss.

I think there might be a bit of tension between cubby and some other members

He didn't even hit Chris Rock the proper way though. Like this:

The amount of memes on this are already ridiculous. I've been loving the ones stemming from Judd Apatow's moronic handwringing-white-dude tweet about how Smith's slap "could have killed him", the whole "what if" genre like:

What if someone DID have an epipen but, in a strange twist of fate, he was allergic to epipens, what about that? Huh? Huh?

What if Chris had a skin condition that made him allergic to human touch?

It's not unthinkable that he could have been knocked out and fallen awkwardly, hit his head on the ground, etc... It happens all the time. It's perhaps a bit of a daft response given he apparently hadn't even seen the slap, but I'm not really buying the whole white person racism thing that's doing the rounds. Obviously it's a thing in general life, but that slap was shocking for plenty of other reasons not related to race.

Woll has resigned from the Academy and it’s looking likely he’ll lose his Oscar. Fun times.

I’d be surprised if he lost the Oscar. Seeing as Harv got to keep all of his.
Honestly I think we should run this exercise every few years just so the biggest gammons raise their heads.

This being America, I fully expect Will to lose his Oscar. What he did is so much worse than what Polanski and Weinstein did.

I don't think he'll lose it. Gotta be consistent!

It's a moot gesture, I believe it merely prevents him from voting. Nothing else.

He won't lose it. Polanski kept his after being thrown out of the academy.
Also what happens if they do, give the award to someone else? No one will accept their Oscar in those circumstances. The only other option is no one goes down as best actor, and that's probably worse.

Kind of funny really
Two of the biggest female sports stars have a film made about.......their dad
The then actor portraying the dad completly overshadows the films achievements by acting like some sort of high school moron defending his wife's honor.
Then also over shadows the other awards of the night.
Meanwhile the academy will be gleaming from the exposure and the ratings for next year I'm case someone else loses their shit.

Film was a bomb too. 50 million budget, 38 million gross worldwide.
Not that that means much these days.

Academy Award wins usually boost earnings quite a bit though.
Wife took the kids to see Sing 2 a few days ago and found the cinema absolutely heaving... but they were all there to watch some movie that just won an Academy Award, not Sing 2.
PS/ Are there any male sports biopics that are all about their mum or dad?

If the controversy/ bitch slap hadn't happened, then I can imagine the gross would have met budget. It's also on HBO in the states but it does feel like it's an uphill struggle, especially for a film that's pushing 2 and a half hours run time.
However, there's probably enough bad will towards...er...Will that some people just won't want to see it.
Chris Rock seems to have done well out of it, though.

PS/ Are there any male sports biopics that are all about their mum or dad? Why would anyone make that, with a male sport star biopic they've already got a relatable protagonist.

We've grown up with our on screen heroes valiantly not shooting people but quite happily battering people 'round the head!

It is a bit odd how little fanfare there was over King Richard, considering the subject matter and Will's performance. Didn't see it mentioned at all in the film threads on here for example. I'd just assumed it wasn't that great, until I heard about the Oscar nomination.
