The article cites historical events and assumes the the reaction to them would be the same as if it happened today.
If John Wayne tried to storm the stage in 2022 I'm pretty sure he'd be heavily criticised and possibly stripped of his award.
Even Polanski would be unlikely to win in this day and age, imo.
The article really is shit.
I'm not saying there's no inherit racism, there probably is some, but the examples provided are false equivalents due to the contemporary culture when those events happened being so different.

If the ovation happened more recently fair enough, but Polanski won the award in 2003, which is a fair bit of time ago. And there has certainly been a lot of criticism of Polanski that I've seen over the years (deservedly so)

I mean I know Republicans always were but were normal people?

I think celebrities of a certain era are more willing to overlook what Polanski did, because they went to the same parties and probably did similarly heinous shit. Read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls for a taste.
Or Woody Allen. Even the non-disputed facts about his love life are extremely fucked up, and he never *really* got cancelled.

JambowayohI honestly think culture is less likely to turn a blind eye to that sort of stuff now. I mean, from a UK perspective at least 2003 was pre Operation Yew Tree, and pre Me-Too. Awareness of sexual assault in general is higher Whilst our UK culture isn't the exact same as the US I do think there would be a bigger outcry around Polanski now than there was 20 years ago. I just think those examples given are so outdated it's hard to draw an exact comparison. We need a control test where, I dunno, Liam Neeson slaps Ricky Gervais. (I would like to see that tbh). If Liam Neeson slapped Chris Rock it would be ...interesting to see the reaction, given Neeson's previous comments.

What the fuck is he babbling on about? I think what he's trying to say is George Bush doesn't care about black people.

Yeah he was probably supposed to just read the auto-cue but decided to cram 5 million thoughts into a 60 second monologue, off the cuff. Not posting to make fun of kanye btw, more for the other 2 guys reactions.
