I own GI Jane on bluray. I'm just putting that out there for context.

I’m not offended, I’m just easily annoyed. To put me in context, I had a weirdly alienated childhood, a surprisingly violent early teens in a boarding school (ritual beatings, thrown down a staircase in a sack, hit every day kind of stuff) raped when I was 18, bashed unconscious and robbed on a train station when I was 20, a generally miserable adult life due to mystery illnesses that are only more recently diagnosed and being dealt with, somehow collided with two different murders (that otherwise had nothing to do with me), then was stabbed dozens of times myself after an eighteen month breakdown over the second murder, by a fucking nutter who thought everything was about him, among other things. ...I can't even imagine. Once again, I'm very sorry that all of this happened to you. Completely agree on that point. As crass as the joke may have been, Will Smith's reaction was absolutely not appropriate either. Confront the guy sure, but even that should perhaps have been done backstage (although I have a feeling that, the joke having been made, if Smith hadn't said anything at that point he'd have been panned for his lack of response instead...) and definitely shouldn't have escalated to violence, unless both men kept pushing each other to it I guess... Frankly all of this could have been avoided with some backstage talk before the show even began. It couldn't have been that hard to go "Hey man, maybe don't mention my wife's condition while you're up there, it's a sensitive subject". Hell, he might have done so for all we know, and Rock ignored him (which would make him much more of a jerk). Instead we got this whole mess...

Maybe she liked having hair though. Suffering isn't really relative
I imagine losing your hair can be difficult (especially for someone in the public eye). Debilitating illness is also difficult. It's not a contest. We're also talking about a thing that happened in the heat of the moment, on live TV
By your logic, we just keep going down the path of x is worse off than y, who is worse off than z until no one is allowed to be upset about anything
To be honest, it doesn't matter what you or anyone else thinks of baldness in women. It's for her to decide how she feels about it

It seems that the recent trend has been that awards ceremonies need to become more and more like roasts of the guests, in a desperate attempt to attract viewers. This seems like the natural culmination of this path.

That. Is. Fucking. Pathetic.

A whole conversation about alopecia, and not one mention that I've seen of the other sufferer, Gail Porter. And how her arse was plastered over the Houses of Parliament.

If you're talking about Twitter/social media, there's people on there supporting way worse things than Will Smith giving Chris Rock a love tap
If you have a problem with how people are interpreting the altercation, take it up with them. But you can't tell Jada how to feel about her alopecia or that she has no right to be sensitive about it

Completely agree. I imagine for someone in the public eye, it's devastating for their mental health and self esteem. As you say, it's not a competition - you can have sympathy for her as well as the millions of people with debilitating conditions.

Given that we live in a society where young black girls are told how they can and can't have their hair, in school (along with being strip searched for no reason and no parents around), it's very reductive to suggest how they can and can't feel about their hair.
Again - this isn't a "X is worse". It's that it's not for us to decide how someone else should feel about how something affected them.

She has a shaved head, he made a film related shaved head quip.
No awards gag justifies marching on stage and assaulting another person.
Spme weird fucking Qanon type analysis going on in this thread.

Of course. He lost control and there should be consequences. He could easily have called him out on stage there and then and made it clear such a gag was not ok. Losing his temper does not reflect well on him at all.

In his apology Smith says "I was out of line", which suggests that the slap didn't go as planned and he hit Rock harder than they had rehearsed. The evidence for this being staged just keeps growing.

I don’t think anyone has gone full blown Qanon or overly woke here. It’s just a weird thing that happened that touches on a number of topics. Anyway, yesterdays chip paper now. Water under the bridge.

Jesus fucking Christ, now we’ve reached “You can’t make jokes about missing hair if the missing hair would have been African hair, even if you’re a black guy to begin with.” Stuff like this is why Trump gets votes. I can’t tell if you’re being serious. It's a bit of a reach from "I'm annoyed someone did a woke." to "I'm voting for an incoherent racist lunatic."

Water under the bridge. A celebrity marched on stage and hit another celebrity in the head in front of millions on live TV. I'd describe that as more than weird. What's weird is the absurdity of trying to justify it as some exercise in awareness and sensitivity to alopecia sufferers.
