You can use it as an independent CD player can’t you?
edit: The PC Engine CD-ROM unit, that is. Stupid page break.

You mean how you could, in theory, use the CD ROM without the PC Engine as an audio player? I suppose that makes sense but it seems to me it would just have red/white stereo outputs for that reason. It has a complete duplicate of the PC Engine AV port.
Actually it wouldn't surprise me if it was compatible with those crazy Japanese karaoke VCD things

Ah finally found someone else asking and answering the same question. First model PC Engine's were RF only - connecting them to the CD unit upgraded them to composite and stereo. It serves no purpose if the console itself has already has AV out.

Played Karateka (Atari 800 version) for quite a while tonight.
Got the hang of it more or less, first stage is very easy, but in the second stage enemies turtle up and don't give you any chances to take them out quickly, plus the damn hawk prevents you from running so enemies will keep spawning. Gets monotonous very quickly that way.
Anyway, great concept and production for 1984, but I'd say Prince of Persia was much better overall.

I'm done collecting retro games now. The last straw was seeing 3DS games going absolute batshit crazy. Once the store is closed, I'll be hacking it I think. Luckily I've got all my 'favourites' that I intend to play, and not sit on a shelf for years.

I'm coming to the end of the magnificent Broken Sword 2 and basically decided I'm going to play point n click games for the forseeable. Here's what I have played already over the years:
Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3 Simon the Sorceror 1 and 2 Toonstruck Broken Sword 1 and 2 Day of the Tentacle Grim Fandango Syberia 1 and 2 Sam and Max: Hit the Road
I think that's all... on my current "to play" list are Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Beneath a Steel Sky and Bladerunner. And recommendations for either classics or more obscure?

Well, there's Full Throttle, and then there's also Lure of the Temptress - I remember enjoying both of those.
If you want to go really retro, there's the old Cthulhu point and click adventures - Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of Ice
I think you can get them on gog and/or steam too.

Harvester and Sanitarium if you want a different vibe. In more modern but retrostyled Wadjet Eye's Blackwell games and The Shivah.
There are the Dark Seed games which have cool imagery but some nasty unfriendly gameplay at times. I have no mouth and I must Scream is worth a play too. Phantasmagoria 1 and 2 are hokey but entertaining and the first 2 Gabriel Knights (and remake of 1) are well regarded, albeit I haven't actually played through them yet. Moebius was a spiritual successor that wasn't too bad.
Also Broken Sword 5 goes back to classic point and click style too. 3 and 4 are the ones I haven't played through yet.

I wish someone would do a remake of the old Spectrum Hobbit game but making it point and click.

It’s already been mentioned but Gabriel Knight 2 is the finest point and click to come out of Sierra in my opinion.

Well I got my Atari 800XL fully working with usb power cable. Had some great times playing classics such as The Goonies, Bruce Lee, Kissing Kousins etc. I'll have to try Karateka.
Any other games worth trying from that era on Atari?

And recommendations for either classics or more obscure? I Have No Mouth And I Must Scre<m is very well regarded, but like many others from the era, the gameplay is nasty and unforgiving. Shadow of the Comet a bit less so, but there's still some annoying pixel hunting. I should also add one of my personal favorites, The Neverhood, but it's a bit more logical and not inventory based. Think of it as Myst with a third person side camera and lots of style. Also it's not available anywhere and used copies are super expensive, so you might need to... dig around. At least it's supported by ScummVM. Also, if you aren't worried of first person point and clicks, some great ones are Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor. The former for more logical puzzles and great atmosphere, and the latter for more Lucasarts-style puzzles with inventory and humor aplenty. Finally, I guess Alone in the Dark technically counts, even if it has combat? Well I got my Atari 800XL fully working with usb power cable. Had some great times playing classics such as The Goonies, Bruce Lee, Kissing Kousins etc. I'll have to try Karateka. Any other games worth trying from that era on Atari? Mountain King on the 800 is the best version imho. Also try Montezuma's Revenge, Castle Hassle, and A.E. (this one really needs composite artifacting to shine).

I just stumbled onto an amiga longplay video as this conversation bizarrely reminded me of Weird Dreams on the amiga. Was actually really good fun to watch. Ticked the nostalgia box nicely. Plus I never used to complete rock hard games so good to see it all.
Which made me think and now I'm halfway through a Lionheart longplay. God I loved that game.

Finally, I guess Alone in the Dark technically counts, even if it has combat? Yeah I played AitD 1-3 back in the day! Also remember playing something called "Jack in the Dark" which I think I got bundled with 3. I considered playing them recently but it's been nearly 30 years since... not sure if the years have been kind due to the style of game...

Jack in the Dark is a nice little freebie, but you can finish it in twenty minutes. It was basically an advertgame to promote AITD2 at the time. AITD1 still holds up though, I think. Lots of potential deaths and obtuse puzzles, but if you can handle old point and clicks, you should be fine.

I think the biggest hurdle with them is their control scheme, where I think you have to switch between modes and use quite a lot of different buttons to do things. Its not only pretty esoteric but also a lot to work into muscle memory.
Once you get that down though, it's still a very atmospheric game.

The fact that it controls a lot like RE helps though. Also there aren't really many buttons, it's basically just the spacebar. Much more annoying is the run command. I'm surprised that nobody has made a native modern port with improvements yet.

Another decent point and click worth playing is the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game - specifically the special edition released on CD in 1994 and voiced by the original cast. Really captures the original series.
The sequel, Judgement Rites, is equally as good.

The Retrotink 5x has been updated with HDR support. It obviously doesn't create real HDR so much as it just puts the image in an HDR container which you can then gamma boost to make a much brighter image. Apparently it goes well with scanlines and BFI (which both dim the image), but my game room TV doesn't do BFI and SDR seems plenty bright enough to me even with scanlines. The result looks strange to me too - I'm guessing I don't like whatever tone mapping is going on - but the community is abuzz about it so.
Anybody here tried it with BFI?

I thought it was a little odd Sega are to release Mega Drive 2 mini, but there are some curiosities among the games including an MD version the original Space Harrier (never ported to the MD) and also an apparently re done smoother version of Space Harrier II. Both are said to be using some form of sprite scaling? There are also mega cd games on this so I'm wondering if they're using the emulation of the mega cds sprite scaling to do this?

Signed up for the Nintendo Online free trial and obviously fired up Super Mario World straight away. I never had a SNES but I played it on emulation years ago. Anyway, I'd forgotten how good it actually is and I'm very proud of myself for genuinely stumbling on the Star Road at the first opportunity.
