I’m surprised a studio can get away with shooting the lead actor these days. Fair enough in the 90s but that’s gotta be a cancelling in the 2020s.

Sounds like plans for Tarantino's last film have been scrapped and it's back to the drawing board. It did sound a bit rubbish in fairness.

Agree - an 80 minute effort would be just right.

He's talked in the past about not wanting to be one of those directors whose later films lack the vibrancy and verve of their earlier work.

I would strongly argue that the likes of Once Upon a Time, Hateful Eight, and Inglourious - whatever good qualities they might have - are all probably too long and self-indulgent.

Meanwhile you've got guys in their seventies and eighties - Scott, Scorsese, Spielberg, Miller - making films that are dynamic, fast-paced, daring in certain ways, often with young casts, almost always displaying a meticulous grasp of filmmaking craft.

This isn't to slag off Tarantino at all; he's definitely a good enough director to be spoken of in the same breath as those other guys. And apart from Hateful Eight and maybe Death Proof, I like all of his films. It's just that I don't buy his argument at all. Make more than ten films, Quentin! Make as many as you want! It doesn't matter! Also you're 61, you're already old! Get over it!

I really liked Hateful Eight, Death Proof of the only film that's a bit shit.

Once Upon A Time has some great moments but surrounded by a lot of meandering nothing.

I kind of felt similar about Django Unchained, quite a different film but it has some great scenes surrounded surrounded by bits where I just lose interest. Not seen it for a while though, maybe it's worth a rewatch.

I still *enjoy* the Kill Bills the most of his films. Arguably not the best objectively but the ones I enjoy the most. Did enjoy Inglorious Basterds in a similar way. Not the most iconic but fun. For me, at least.

It's fun to compare Tarrantino's approach to Takashi Miike though, who just churns out films constantly, and only a small percentage are actually great.

Bit bizarre you calling Tarantino's latest films too long and self-indulgent but then mention Ridley Scott and Scorsese as a counterpoint when Scorsese's last two films have both been over three hours and Scott's last few films have also been a bit long and a bit shit (though Last Duel was decent).

Edgar Wright is 50 today. He doesn’t look it but then Spaced is 25 this year and that wasn’t even his first tv directing job so he’s probably had the career of a much older man already.

Watching Nandor Fodor last night was a real reminder of how influential he’s been on British cinema. There is basically a whole category of film that has been going for the last 20 years that wouldn’t exist as we know it if him and Nira Park hadn’t been able to get Shaun of the Dead greenlit and its everything from Son of Rambow through to Ben Wheatley’s stuff and arguably even a film like Nativity might not have got funded either. It’d all be period drama, Ken Loach or Richard Curtis instead.

No idea where to post these but I found this anthology of shorts today and thought they were impressive
