I remember him saying he was going on holiday so most likely reducing forum time which is always a good thing. Indeed. A wee break from the internet for two weeks was bliss.

Fie! 'tis all beyond my ken.
I've bought this today and restarted from my previous effort since I now actually have time to read and ingest what's going on and not limited to smashing through as much as poss in a 2 hour window.
I've created a super tall female archer lady with a short sword & board girl ... think Xena and her companion. On my previous go, I hadn't realised I could have 2 additional companions from the pawnhub so I rounded out my lady par-tay with a sorc and a thief and did some menial jobs around the first camp. There is a shack on a hillside that I'm confused as how to get to so I'm assuming it becomes available later or I learn some traversal mechanic that will allow me to reach it.
I'm enjoying it so far, just got Melve after a bit night time travelling, it gets DARK dunnit! I quite liked mooching through the countryside by lanternlight and being set upon by skellies. I arrowed one in the face so it doubled over and then ran up and booted it off the edge. One of my minions exclaimed that it was a clever way of dispatching foes and will remember to relay the story to her master. I loved that! Then we all high fived and basked in the healing glow from my sorceress.
More!

Does my archery damage increase with vocation level or does that just grant access to higher level skills & augs?
I was going over all my stuff earlier and realised the extra pawns I had in my crew were still level 2 so I swapped them out at the nearest hub for level appropriate ones. Side affect of this is I now have fire arrows cos the new sorc sets my bow on fire. Wish I'd swapped them sooner.
I was mooching around the city we arrived at and obvs wandered too far because a load of guards ran up and fucked my shit up then threw me in jail. 10 fuckin grand to get out. Robbery I tells ya.

I think it's a combination of leveling up, getting new abilities plus finding phat lewt. Yeah, keep an eye on your hired pawns. I normally have mine higher level than me, because, why the hell not. A mage should be able to buff your weapons yeah but if it's a hired pawn, you won't be able to change what they cast. If you had a mage as your pawn, then you could change it up a bit. That jail seems odd, I'd reload the save!

I tried to reload my save but it out me straight back in jail. I didn't reload the last inn save because it was so long ago I can't even remember it.
Anyways I'm 10k lighter.
I must have ticked past some arbitrary goal or checkpoint because I've started picking up a bunch of quests from random peeps in the square that weren't available before.
I'd got one to teach some guy my slick archery moves after buying him a bow, so I'm about to set off back to Trevo Mines which I've just got back from.
Also, cooking while camping must surely trigger the veggies/vegans ... food pawn!!

Fuck it, you'll make 10k quickly enough, just crack on
Also, you don't have to have loads of camping kits - they're not consumable items so this helps with your equip load.
I should really get back into this again. Too many games as per usual

I keep giving them to Erin (my pawn) and regularly find her sat on her ass . I've camped a few times and not realised they're not going down. Poor girl must be knackered. Never complains though

Well you know now I did the same at first too Have you gone archer then? That's what I am too. I'm hoping they have the equivalent of 10 fold flurry from the first game I can't remember where I am in this, it's been a while

They're kind of consumables, as attacks at night can destroy them IIRC, although that never actually happened to me.
You can also sell at shops/upgrade gear with stuff that's in your inn storage IIRC, so just dump any heavy stuff there asap. There's loads of stuff that the game doesn't explain well or at all!
RE weapon upgrades. Where you upgrade them also has a slight impact. Not really worth worrying about now, but you can squeeze some extra damage out of them later in the game.
Some of this may be absolute bollocks that I've just made up...

So my camp could be attacked at night ... awesome.
My archer is a bit limp at the moment so I'm relying on my supports a bit while I ping enemies from high ground as best as poss.
Addmittedly the main story has not really drawn me in much and it's the random exploration that's hooking me but it's early days.

It's usually just a few basic mobs, nothing too bad. You can also get different camping sets for the different areas (forest for early game) which reduce the chance of being attacked.

If I'm doing an all nighter, as it were, I just find some shelter or an abandoned place and just sit it out. It's more realistic! Plus, you can get some awesome night encounters where you barely make it till morning

Holy shit how big is Trevo mine?
I've moved further north and found a hole in the ground and it states that it's another entrance on my map.
Also, I finally caught the begger wandering off so followed him to a bar and nothing was happening so I selected 'pass the time' with the barman ... Gone! This begger is a slippery fish. I'll get him

That follow the beggar quest is a pain in the arse. The stealth isn’t hard - it’s barely stealth at all - but it is an exercise in patience.
Trevo mines are well worth exploring fully - check the map to see if there are any nooks and crannies you’ve missed. There’s some handy early game loot to find there… and be sure to visit the Vocation guild too!
I keep promising myself I’ll continue the NG+ I started and only did a couple of hours on…

Played for about 4 hours last night and all of that was 1 quest and then a fuck ton of exploration. The oxcart owner asked me to ride with the cart and keep it safe to deliver a note to sir lennart. Simple enough I thought yet for some reason I was still charged 100g to get on. Smallscale nighttime scuffle mid journey where the cart got trashed and the accompanying soldiers all turned on me for some reason. This is not right surely, so I approached the cart handler who was stood by the remains of a cart in bits on its side to be told, the cart is not accepting passengers at this time. LOL. I ran a bit ahead wondering what to do since I think I've broken the quest to then hear a noise behind me. Upon return to the cart it's now upright and ready to go. Oh that'll be another 100 sweet gold pieces ser! We arrived in Melve, handed the note off to lennart and decided to make my way back to the city on foot following the original route we travelled at the start of the game. Starting to explore more off the beaten track on the way I found a cave up above a waterfall that I clearly missed the first pass. Worth an investigation. This tiny cave actually exits back out where the original griffin crash landed waaaaaay back at the start and I think if I'd come in here the first time I'd have been rinsed by either weird lion looking thing or from opening that fancy ass chest in the large cavern opening and spawning a load of magical skellies and a stupidly powerful wizard thing. OMG it had an OP-AF tornado spell that threw my 3 companions around like rag dolls and down them all. Got a sweet cheevo from a multi-revive though and a tasty looking magic coat. I'll keep it if I start using the magics. TLDR tiny cave ended up being quite large and involved and I'm now quite fat with loot. Game is ace

The sense of adventure, and sense of place, combined with satisfying as fuck combat with pawns being flung left right and centre is exactly what it's all about. Forget frame rates and inventory management niggles, and you can see past all that crap to really enjoy it. Even sounded fun to read

This sort of thing is indeed why the game is great. (Tiny spoiler but just to say that the OP tornado spell is called Maelstrom and is very much something you can learn and then turn on your enemies. It’s every bit as awesome as you might imagine!)

So much has happened since my last check in and it seems that every time I return to vernworth, some other quest giver seeks me out. I've explored the slums, found some secret stuff. Pimped a little girl into a noble family for a bit. Investigated the goings of of the Abyss/nun lady and have a waypoint that is now miiiiles away. Finally caught the beggar. Nearly thought I'd screwed it up as the door locked but I was randomly jumping all over trying to get on the balcony or a roof or anything and he suddenly appeared and I clattered through the door like del-boy through the bar hatch. Luckily this was the right thing to do as I grabbed the thing and handed it to the woman at the bar. She only fuckn murdered him 0_o Out in the wilderness, I've discovered a hidden village and gained 2 theify items that I can't use yet cos I'm all about the arrows. I've cleared out the rest of Trevo mine, literally only had one more room/area to explore and I would've had both items /headdesk Journeyed to Arbour (elf town) and got myself a slick furry bow. Then immediately replaced with a thorny bow costing 33k, welp! Finally, i found a port crystal, didn't even know this was a thing. I dropped it in Arbour and ported home. All that above hardly scratches the surface of my adventuring today, I can't wait to get back to it. So much I wanna go do

I love the lighting in this. When I first saw it months before release I thought it looked a bit dull but it really is purdy at times. I was making my way out of the misty marsh (aside, the also looks cool AF) and as I was making my way back out of the forest to the path the early morning sunrise started to pass through the trees. I just sat and watched it rise and cascade all around.
Alas, poor Gregor. I am without wakestones.

Maxed my archer and I got a special skill from an elf guy in Arbor but happened to reload and he wouldn't give me it again :/
Level 33 now and I've swapped to warrior now that swinging a huuuge hammer about. I spent nearly 3 hours taking some wildly off the beaten track along the coastal edge and through caverns and tunnels to Bhatal investigating eeeeverything along the way.
Warrior is cool and things die quicker from my actions but I still prefer the archer.

Like you though, I always end up ranger in dd1 and archer in dd2. It's just a pity they took away the dagger melee abilities away from the dd2 archer though. I do miss not being able to pick them off from afar but also have the ability to double jump, instant reset and toss and trigger when I'm surrounded. But apart from that I love it

Finally slogged my way through to the true ending. What a load of nonsense it all is I still have no real idea what I really achieved through the whole game. It was mostly fun, but definitely outstayed it’s welcome for me. Just not enough variety. Solid 7/10 overall though.
