Yeah I got a high five from my pawn as I walked past him. Felt kind of good It’s definitely a bit janky, but it’s got charm for sure.

It's absolutely loony tunes. Also, the food cooking 'animation' cracks me up every time.

This is great, but I am a bit more bothered by the performance than I thought I’d be - it feels sluggish and unresponsive (PS5). Won’t keep me from playing it, mind - I am a fighter/warrior, but I would imagine archer doesn’t feel good? Archer feels fine for me personally. Hasn't felt sluggish.

One of the PS Access videos about the game has Rob almost obsessed trying to work out if the food cooking is FMV or computer graphics.

I've time stamped the video here, it certainly looks real to me, Rob has asked Capcom themselves, I'm not sure he's got an answer.

Should've used an air fryer.
I wish there was a lock-on mechanic, but I'm sure I'll (eventually) get used to not having one.
The Thief class gets a dodge move by default, which is nice - it's more of a dash than a roll or quickstep, and I haven't played around enough to see whether it has i-frames, though.

This archer unhappiness is disappointing. I created an archer as i was a ranger/strider last time round and really enjoyed it.
Guess i'll have to see how it goes first. Half-tempted to redesign a character, but will try it out & change path if it is a pain. I will try a balanced group with theif, fighter and mage pawns with me as stealthy archer arsehole.

Same here!
In fairness, I didn't give the Archer class as much time as I should've done - the first couple of combat encounters didn't feel great, and not being able to use L2 to aim/R2 to fire was a pain in the dick (stupid muscle memory!), so I changed over to Thief very early indeed.
Looking at some of our fellow forum members' accounts, playing as an Archer gets better with time invested and skills purchased, so it's almost certainly worth giving it more of a chance than I did.

It’s definitely real. Right? Definitely. Real enough to make me feel hungry every time is see it, anyways. I didn't think I'd ever find a cut scene of a chop being fried making me laugh, but here we are.

All I’ll say is the archer has properly clicked with me after a very short time. Don’t give up the notion just yet.

Played a bit more this morning. Very much enjoying it for all the reasons everyone has already said.
The Fighter vocation is good fun, although I’m having to battle with my Elden Ring muscle memory of having block / parry (with my shield) on R1, and having to hold L1 to use all the allocated skills… the controls can be remapped but then I fear messing with other allocated abilities…
Anyway, my left / right brain issues aside, the combat is a lot of fun. Climbing up a Minotaur to stab it in its head will never get old.
So far, the Fighter Meister (Lennart, who you meet early on as part of the story) isn’t giving up any special abilities despite all my good deeds doing his errands, but I stumbled across the Thief one who was very keen to teach me new moves, despite neither my Arisen nor Pawn using that Vocation…
I’ve lots of exploring to do and can’t wait to get back to it.

Yeah I'm missing the close combat of the daggers with the archer. I might change
This is one of the few things I'm missing from the original, thus far - the Strider and Ranger vocations in DD1 both allowed the use of a bow and dual daggers. It's a shame to have to choose... unless an advanced vocation, allowing both, will open up later on? Hmm.
Thief is a lot of fun, if you fancy a change of pace I swapped vocations at the first inn I found. I think I saw a wayfarer class somewhere that can use skills from different vocations. I'm going to have to read up on that before I switch as u want to get this right. And I'm so glad you mentioned the l2 r2 thing when using the bow. I was struggling last night with the current control method

I think it’s the controls I don’t like for the archer. Having square as quick fire isn’t really working for me. Maybe I’ll wait for a couple of upgrades to see if it clicks. Yup, same here

Ahh man this is such an expensive but janky game it's hilarious. I'm having a lot of fun here and it's very clear no one higher up at Capcom said no to the director about its quirks which really shouldn't work but strangely do. It's great that games like this are given the greenlight to be made because I've really enjoyed just exploring and not having icon vomit all over my map.

Archer is quite engaging combat wise as you have to aim for almost everything. It's a bit like playing a third person shooter. I don't even really use the quick attack. Hang on then, not even using the square button? Can you tell me exactly what buttons you're pressing to fire and are you aiming somehow? Ala down the sights but with a bow?

Yeah, it's that bit that is difficult to explain when discussing what the original is like. It's simpler to just get people to play it. Super fun though isn't it.

Started. Duff, grabbed your pawn (another archer) and maybe stripyrex's i think (a fighter). Didn't see any theiving pawns, but we'll see how two archers go. Not sure if I can supply any decent stuff in return once i get going as it's early days, but will try to limit sending them back with stones in their pockets.

This is from gamefaqs re the wayfarer class - nitpick but warfarer won't show you wearing multiple weapons you just switch vocations with a button then that vocation's weapon materializes in your hand. imgur.com/gA3Arg8

Have you figured out a way to remap the controls so that the Archer plays like Ranger/Strider in DD1, then?
If memory serves, the original had various preset control schemes you could choose. Aiming and firing were mapped to L1 and R1 respectively by default (it was originally a PS3 game, after all!), but one of the other layouts allowed you to use L2/R2.
In DD2's default control scheme, L2 sheaths/unsheathes your weapon, while R2 grabs objects/people/whatever. Square quickfires an arrow, while holding and releasing R1 allows you to target enemies.
I can't see separate 'aim' and 'fire' mechanics that I could theoretically remap to make it play like the original.

Holding and releasing r1 to target something really doesn't fit right in my head

Same for me - I've played so many third-person shooters that my muscle memory kicks in every single time. "Left trigger to aim, right to fire."
I had the exact same experience with Dragon Age: Inquisition, in which I started out as a ranged Rogue and respecced to melee Rogue as I couldn't hack the archery controls.

I'm guessing that they want each class to be more specific and use the pawn system more. So you do the bow, your thief pawn does daggers, next pawn does spells and heals, fighter tanks. All split up a bit and have to rely on the other pawns more.
Apparently it was also implemented in dragons dogma online because using a strider/ranger pretty much made you fairly op

Still worth climbing as an archer. If you get on their head you can fire loads of shots into their faces.
