Bloody Amazon's still saying my copy isn't due to arrive until Saturday No, fuck that! Can't you get it tomorrow from somewhere else quickly and then cancel the amazon one? Curry's are doing it for 52 quid with a code of dragon20

Not sure when mine will arrive as the wife ordered it. Tomorrow would be nice though.

I'm too well behaved to have a quick trip to NZ. sadly, I also have stuff on tonight and tomorrow night, but later on tomorrow, I will probably take numerous hours to design a character and pawn...and then have to call it a night. Then on saturday I might finally get to play a bit.

I normally have band practice on Fridays, but it's moved to Saturday this week, and the mate I normally go for beers with has his kids over on Fridays.
So that means I can pop to the pub for a few tomorrow, come back, have a smoke and then just fucking go for it.
If it turns up, that is...

There was a character creator somewhere wasn't there? Maybe I should try and find that later tonight on xbl and get started, then I might get to go and explore briefly tomorrow, or just get caught in choice inertia tonight and just try to sort out my class etc for hours and leave properly choosing until tomorrow.
Honestly, deciding on what to start as and getting the character built is the worst bit! At least in the OG gameyou could change easily enough with no issues, and I hear this is similar, so I should just choose something quickly and see how it goes and avoid that trauma.

Good question! Will have a look.
In my experience, Amazon usually sends out an automated email saying, "One of your pre-ordered items is now eligible for release date delivery and has been upgraded at no additional charge." For whatever reason, that hasn't happened with DD2 (yet, he added in a rare display of optimism).

Yeah, I'm a bit afraid of that character creator. I'm bad enough with soulsborne and skyrim. I'll have to give myself an extra hour of playtime to incorporate my agony of choices

I am a bit underwhelmed with how familiar it looks in videos. This is me. I've not played the first one, but the general cult status the first one and good reviews make me intrigued. But the videos generally look like Fisher Price RPG. Very generic... :x

As an open-world action RPG, this looks far less generic to my eyes than, say, Rise of the Ronin.
I particularly like the idea that it follows the Elden Ring/Breath of the Wild approach to organic exploration, in contrast to Ronin's reliance on the Ubi-quitous (see what I did there?) AAA open-world model.

Very generic... :x It's really difficult to explain how good the first one (and hopefully this one) is - you can say satisfying combat, amusing pawns and both seriously tense and seriously amusing bits till the cows come home, but you just have to play it to feel how it works so well. Someone else try and explain - I can't do it

I might get it just to test out the new rig. I was mildly concerned that the cpu wasn’t good enough so this looks like a good fps test. (i5 14400 with 4070 32 gig ram.) helldivers gets 80-120fps on max settings and that gets very very busy on screen.

I watch a lot of 'Let's Play' stuff on YouTube, in no small part because I don't have much of a budget for gaming and want to amass all the information I can before deciding whether to buy a given title.
Of all the games I've checked out in this manner - and subsequently purchased - Dragon's Dogma was probably the hardest to get a handle on by watching gameplay footage alone.
It looks kind of janky, the graphics aren't the best, the story's sort of bland, the pawns never shut the hell up, modern QOL features are largely absent... and so on, and so forth. "What's all the fuss about?" I'd wonder.
But for finding myself with loads of free time during lockdown in early 2020, I might never have bitten the bullet...
... However, I'm really glad I did.
While it may look generic at first glance, it's far more than the sum of its parts; moreover, what seemed like standard fantasy RPG fare when viewed on YouTube turned out to be far weirder (in a good way!) than I'd anticipated.
If you have any interest whatsoever in the sequel, and if your circumstances permit, I'd encourage you to give it a try.
TL;DR "Pawns etc.," as a wise man once said.

I never tried the original and how you describe watching it is how I feel. It looks janky, the pawns annoying, the dialogue meh but yeah everyone seems to love it. One video review I watched of the combat made me question if I could play it solo without the pawns.

peacemaker I get that, really I do... but this is one of those instances in which watching someone else play the game is only going to give you part of the story. (At least, that was the case for me - your mileage may vary.) If you have any interest in checking out the sequel, and £60 to spare, I hope you'll do so; failing that, the original is only a couple of quid on PS and Xbox right now, and it should give you a decent idea of what we're all banging on about!

DD is like the essence of the Benny Hill theme music put into the form of an action rpg.
Anything can happen at any moment; a quiet stroll in the country can suddenly become a crescendo of comedy, chaos, and utter bedlam with pawns being tossed around by giant ogres, thrust off cliffs, sometimes whilst on fire, or just screaming random phrases as a pack of goblins suddenly descend on you out of nowhere. You try to flee only to run into a pack of sleeping wolves who then join the melee. Sometimes attacking you, sometimes the goblins. Absolutely no one knows what is going on.
This can sometime takes place in the pitch black with only torches to illuminate the carnage taking place around you.
And the combat and class systems are really good!

The main memory I have of the first game is pitched battles that just never end as more and more enemies get aggroed. I seem to recall fighting along a river against invisible lizard men, before running downhill through a heavily forested area, fighting goblins before we all spilled out into a clearing where a dragon murdered us.
I was only popping to the shops to get some milk.

Right, got an archer sorted and a mage for support. Not sure why they required a moniker along with the name i gave them, which is odd.
Anyhoo, ready for late tomorrow night now.
