Not really planning to play all the way through, just want to get a feel for it.
Messing around with party composition should help there, if you feel inclined to keep playing for a bit, as it's quite an important mechanic.
Quaddy's advice in that regard is bang on, as usual.
I managed to hire a powerful mage pawn free of charge, courtesy of a PSN friend - it didn't trivialise the game, but it sure made life easier!

Sorry I mean my main pawn is a mage. I’m a strider. I hired a warrior and a sorcerer I think. Then I met the guy at the gate who was telling me to consider my party before taking on his training. Ah right, cool. You've got it sorted then, misread your message. Crack on!

Yeah you can get some cool high level guys to help! All it does is simply make the game even more enjoyable and you smile more. And yes Rob, party mechanics are pretty much essential to make it all work well. You can adjust your main pawns behaviour for example, by sitting in a chair at the main Inn in gran soren. There, you can customise how they'll behave on the field. More or less aggressive, spell/party priority, talk less/more etc. It goes further than that too. Later on you can get potions that do the same effect and can use them on the fly. And going even further, when you hire other people's pawns, you can inspect *their* traits as to how their player has customised their behaviour so you can select an aggressive or defensive sorcerer for example. Deeper than you think, this game. Edit 3 for fucks sake - the d pad is important too. There are commands on the left right up down buttons that make your character command your pawns - things like help me, go, come on, etc etc. These can help when things go wrong in the field, but if you use them too much, over time, it will change your pawns default behaviour so you have to sit at the chair in the Inn again or neck a rare potion to change it. Right, that's gotta be it now for party mechanics, surely! Edit 4: The last bit about the d pad only affects your pawns traits, not the hired ones.

So. This is becoming like dark souls in the sense that I’ve now bought it a third time for another console. Started a handheld play on the switch last night. It’s awesome.
Erm. I have now bought dark souls for the switch as well of course. That’s… oh gosh. That’s the fifth version of dark souls 1 I’ve bought.
Help.

But surely you've got to have them for all the consoles you own? I mean, otherwise, that's just daft, isn't it?
Erm.
Yeah.
Help.

Moving on from our mental instability, good to hear it's good hand held. I always have it docked because I'm a lazy bastard. What character?

In the original game, my Arisen was a Ranger while my main pawn was a Strider - not the most sensible of approaches, in hindsight, as it basically led to me having two archers on deck at all times.
I think I'll stick with Ranger* for my protagonist this time, and have my pawn be something else. Archer + mage + warrior + [something] seems like a better plan.
* Assuming this class is in the sequel.

I hope night time is still relatively bowel-loosening in the new one.
Wandering through the woods in the pitch black and stumbling across a church under siege by creepy ass mumbling zombies still sticks with me. A lot of stuff was set on fire at that point. As were my pants afterwards.

For me it was walking through the woods at night, fighting trash goblins, when out of nowhere, king of the fuckin’ forest a dragon lands and breathes fire, wiping my party.

I definitely remember getting murdered by a dragon in a forest while fighting goblins.
And a big chimera or manticore fight I somehow stumbled into.

Think I’m going to do an archer type thing Correct answer. Strider for 10 levels then switch to ranger, get 10 fold flurry and Comet shot = death to the infidels.

I think I’ve just found that quest you guys were talking about. Will tidy up some stuff in the opening area then head out.
Regarding the pawns, I guess I just pick the ones I want then leave them to do their shit? As in they don’t need micromanagement?

Yeah leave them to it. Their human owners set up their traits so you can't change their behaviour. Just keep an eye on yours and make adjustments if it's not panning out right.
Basically your mage should be doing these things, hopefully in this order when a fight happens-
1. Buff everyone's melee weapons with fire, ice or whatever buff you've loaded them with 2. Nuke a bit 3. Stop nuking if people are getting seriously battered and heal instead. 4. Talk incessantly until you sit them in the chair and tell them to shut up more.

Also, I assume you have the dark arisen version of the game?
If so, you should have an eternal ferrystone in your inventory. For God's sake, never ever lose that. It's your fast travel item. Anywhere you are, if you use that, you'll be able to warp to gran soren. Later on you'll find items called portstones.
You can put a portstone down on the floor anywhere and then later, when you use your ferrystone, you can then select where to warp. Either gran soren or wherever you have any portstones on the floor. Very useful.
You should also have some specific armour for your class. It should have a slight green outline, indicating it's special. I'd probably check that out too.

While we're at it, try and make sure you are always at "very light" regarding inventory items and burden.
Think of the percentage checks you get in dark souls when you can fast roll etc or fat rolling. Keep it in Very Light or if you have to, just Light, or you'll start to slow down.
Give everything to your mage pawn- mages don't need the agility. I always make my mage pawn a massive fat bastard so he can carry more.
Which brings me nicely to point 2 - pick up *absolutely everything*. That harpy pinion may look useless to you as you loot it, but weapon upgrades require all manner of random items, as does creating crazy (and amazingly useful) potions and item. (Make sure you create a skeleton key at some point or locate a chest in gran soren that spawns one every day or so up some stairs on the way to the castle.) The weapons merchant in gran soren is the guy in the shop on the right hand side as you come out of the main Inn with the inn behind you. Hes the guy that constantly says, "theyre masterworks all", all the fucking time.
And get lanterns for everyone and give everyone spare oil. Or get your mage to hold the oil. And give him/her a ton of healing herbs so they can adequately heal on the fly as well as casting heal. Use your mage as the resident evil storage chest, basically.

I'm so tempted to look at some videos but I'm going to be strict and wait. I saw some videos on Reddit. Essentially magic spells tank the frame rate, especially if your pawns do them too. Other than that it looked really solid.

Other than that it looked really solid. Yeah, I've heard similar but not checked any videos out yet. I'm quite excited - I normally don't give a shit and read up on stuff but I really want to go in blind on this one. It's a shame about the frame rate, but fuck it, it is what it is, and the first one isn't exactly smooth as glass, and while the ps5 sequel should be, I'm still fucking well up for it anyway.

I'm pretty excited too.
Part of it's the anticipation of having something new to play - having decided to skip Persona 3 Reload, Dragon's Dogma II will be my first gaming purchase of the year - but thinking back to when I first played the original, during lockdown in 2020, has also got me psyched for DD2 in its own right.

Wow, quad, that’s loads of info, thanks! I’d say I understood about half though Not sure about that item, I don’t remember seeing it but I’ll check again. Not sure I can upgrade or create potions yet. But I’ll pick everything up like you said. Regarding levelling, is there anything I’m supposed to do? I’m like level 6 or something but not sure if that means I have some skill points to spend somewhere at some point. So pawns are other players created pawns for their game? I missed that. Do those players then have to be online for them to be available? This is almost as confusing as souls

I am not forum user Quadfather, and his knowledge of this game dwarfs my own, but I'm fairly sure I can answer this one: no, they don't. You can hire pawns regardless of whether their creators are online or not.
It's a really cool system, actually - pawns gain quest experience from adventuring with other players, which can be helpful when you next boot up the game to find that someone has been using your pawn in the meantime.
Also, you can send little messages/gifts to the owners of pawns you discharge from your party, which is a nice touch.

You can also send them back with a gift, which is funny when it's a load of endgame armour and now your returning pawn is making your own damage look pitiful.
