Rings of Power S2
I considered stopping about halfway through, but powered through to the end. I doubt I'll be watching more.
I don't hate the show. It just makes me feel... nothing. Like when there's rousing speeches and swelling music, or when a character does something cool that would have had my fist pumping in a screening of the Peter Jackson movies, I watch it and just go "huh, I guess that was ok". There's no pumps, no nothing.
I'm not sure what the problem is; it's not like I'm immune to the charms of a good fantasy story! Maybe it's that nothing really has any stakes, because you know half of these people are going to survive and so never feel like they're actually in danger. Maybe it's the often-flat performances, or the subtle-as-a-sledgehammer writing. Maybe it's the result of too many characters and storylines to split attention between. Maybe it's the hobbits, upon all of whom I wish painful death.
Either way, I just didn't really give a shit about any of it. I'm happy for the people who it clicked with, but I won't be back for Season 3.
5/10

Can't currently watch this where I live and it's pissing me off to the point I'm looking at BR players and importing the boxset. A VPN would be cheaper, surely? That's actually a good shout. Having gone straight from TPB and the like a few years back I hadn't actually considered that.

It's quite funny seeing Sophie in Slow Horses after watching Detectorists earlier in the year. Pretty stark difference in character! Same when she rocked up in Peaky Blinders

Shogun, Disney+/FX
My wife signed up for 3 months of Disney+ for Ā£2 a month. Not much I'm really bothered about tbh but noticed this.
Great cast, sets/FX and costumes. Not a thrill a minute watch but intriguing story based loosely on history and the book, of course.
The extras are a good watch as well. If you fancy a bit of fuedal Japan, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Futurama s12 / Hulu era s2 (disney+) Thankful to report that after the first Hulu season was a disaster comprised almost entirely of failed, out of date attempts at topic satire and multiple worst episode ever contenders, theyāve mostly turned it back around again. Still a couple of slight topical misfires but theyāve got better at making the references feel like part of the world of the show. Otherwise things are broadly in the spirit of the Comedy Central era revival and for the most part this season is back to giving us āmore Futuramaā and thatās no bad thing. Huh. Colour me (re)intrigued.

Are there many callbacks to the first D+ season? Iām wondering if itās worth just skipping the ones I havenāt bothered watching. (The Dune one was sooooo bad).

Tokyo Vice S2
Like S1 it took a few episodes for me to get into it again, but once it got going I really enjoyed it. It tied up the main story nicely but there were a few loose ends left dangling; maybe they were planning to pick them up in a S3 but it sounds like that isn't likely to happen. A really interesting insight into Japanese Yakuza culture though and well worth watching.
8/10

Just finished this last night too. Probably a 10 for me to be honest, absolutely loved it and am surprised it's not getting more attention.

Refreshing my memory of Industry ahead of S3, and boy have I enjoyed it...
Industry S1 - 8/10
Starting with the criticisms, it feels a little disconnected as a season, with lots of individual episodes and events and only a handful of storylines running throughout. The sex is sometimes gratuitous and the shock factor has aged a little, but largely develops the characters and their relationships, particularly Harper, Yas, and Rob. Overall it's absolutely fantastic - I worked in finance for longer than I care to remember and it's some of the events are not a million miles away from things I experienced in my 20s, and that obviously makes the show feel more relevant. Sesh is a 10/10 and hits the nail on that stomach drop feeling of fucking up big time at work (I had a 5 figure fuck up once). And the Nutcracker Christmas episode brings back a lot of fuzzy memories.
Industry S2 - 9/10
When this first showed in weekly serial form I didn't enjoy it as much as S1. There are a handful of weaker characters given too much screen time (nu-Kenny and Venetia are constant irritants), it leans heavily into a post-Covid society and some of that impact of life after lockdown has been lost with time, and at times there's an odd amnesia about some of the things that went on before. But running through the season are 4 or 5 strong storylines and it feels as through the lead actors have really found their feet, and there's far less reliance on sex and drugs (though plenty of that still). It builds to a brilliant climax where the dynamic and illusion of who is really in control shifts constantly in every storyline.
It's an easy and lazy comparison given the subject matter, but I'm pretty sure that - up to this point - I like Industry more than Succession. Let's see how S3 goes...

Gulp!
I really need to find time for series 2. The first season came along at the perfect time for me as it was lockdown and Iād got myself a wicked case of insomnia. It was a good show to kill time while I waited for either the two hours of sleep Iād get or work to start again.

Brassic 6. 8/10, but maybe a third of it was a 10, when it was good it was hilarious but there was a wee mid season lull - never unwatchable though.

Mr McMahon (netflix)
Sets itself up as a profile of what a controversial character Vince McMahon is but 95% of it is a nothing-new-here truncated history of the WWE complete with all the standard self-made myth making of one of their in-house documentaries. There are glimpses of what a weirdo he really is here and there but for the most part, since it was made before the worst of the recent sexual assault allegations emerged, its got nothing you wouldnāt already know if youād consumed any wrestling media in the last 20 years.
Would have been interesting to see my wifeās reaction as she doesnāt watch wrestling at all but she didnāt want to watch it. Which I think is a big problem for the show - wrestling fans will already know it all, nonwrestling fans have no reason to watch it. Its well enough made but I donāt know who they think this is for.
Myth Country (iplayer)
Charlie Cooper (Kurtan from This Country) spends three episodes exploring British folktales and mysteries. Only heās playing(?) a version of himself thatās very similar to a slightly more grown-up Kurtan and the documentary style its shot in is very reminiscent of This Country. Its a funny lightweight watch and I wish there were twice as many episodes. Enjoyed it a lot.

Can only echo user Simpleās comments on Mr McMahon. The great majority paints him as a ruthless businessman with a sketchy side and when it does finally cover the rape and sex trafficking allegations they 50/50 it. Not surprising when you know Netflix have bought in to be the home of the WWEās flagship show from next year.
I finished and felt like six episodes wasnāt anywhere near enough to scratch the surface. Especially when they devote a whole episode to how his kids have worked in the company, and then only give 20 mins to the recent controversy.
The main selling point is that you get Vinceās direct participation, for what itās worth, and he does at least give himself plenty of rope to hang himself with (āthe affair was consensualā¦ and even if it wasnāt the statute of limitations has run out.ā)
If you have an interest in this, you get a deeper dive in Viceās the Dark Side of the Ring series.

That statute of limitations line was so chilling.
Like those people who know the different technical/Latin terms for fancying pubescent and pre-pubescent children. Why would you even know that if youāre not guilty or a lawyer?

The Orchestra (Orkestret) - S1&2Danish sitcom about the cutthroat world of classical musicians. Follows two main characters, Jeppe who is a simpering and spineless administrator out of his depth in his job and dealing with his nightmare of a wife, and Bo, the orchestra's second clarinet who jealously battles for the position of first clarinet held by a brilliantly portrayed villain called Simon. Season 1 was great, all the characters are awful people but you somehow root for them. Season 2 leaned a little too far away from comedy and towards straight-up drama for my liking, and I hated how things ended for one of the main characters, but overall it was also highly enjoyable and both seasons had some proper laugh out loud moments scattered throughout. Gamers may find that one particular actor sounds familiar, and surprisingly he also looks a bit like the iconic video game character he voices too. I finished season one of this last night and enjoyed it immensely. Iād love to start on season two next but havenāt been able to find a torrent of it. I see season one is on Apple TV so maybe season two will get put in there eventually too.

House of the Dragon S2 Hmm. They kind of fucked the last episode, which was a bit frustrating. Overall it was bloody brilliant but that last ep does let it down a bit. The whole bastard dragon rider sequence of events just suddenly happened and then moved along VERY quickly. With so much else taking so long to be resolved, I would have thought this would have been the natural season cliffhanger to build to. Characters seemed to switch personalities quite quickly as well, like it's natural for Ulf's type of persona to end up being full of his own importance, but it was too soon.
The Lannister man's adventures in Essos were incredibly cringeworthy, with the mud wrestling a particular lowlight.
The well paced and proper slow build of Daemon and his army building, with his motivations always murky, had a brilliant payoff and that was one aspect of the season I really liked. Others may have thought it drawn out but to me that captured the early GoT magic of watching something slowly unfold over time to a proper and satisfying conclusion. The little Tully boy was absolutely brilliant as well.

I'd agree with a lot of that. The plot point you praised in the spoiler was great because it was one of the bits where the outcome wasn't obviously sign posted.
HotD does occasionally foreshadow too much and too obviously. GoT was at it's best when there was that slow setup that laid out the complexity of a situation and the viewer had the anxiety of being unable to predict the resolution. Also aided by the shockingly 'bad' outcome actually happening every so often meaning you could never relax into a plot armour comfort zone.
I wish HotD would do more to replicate this than it has done thus far.

I absolutely loved Daemon's character in the first season, but it felt like they spent far too long with him in the second one with fuck all happening.
Mostly excellent stuff, though. Pisses all over the later seasons of GoT from a great height.
There were supposed to be two more episodes in this season IIRC, but they got held off for the beginning of S3 (which is going to be an agonising wait).

I seem to be in the minority as I actually enjoyed Kaos but I don't think it needed a direct sequel.
May have helped that I did a Classics GCSE so half remembered the stories. I actually thought the modern transposition worked really well plus Jeff and co were fun.
I'd certainly have watched more greek mythology adapted this way but I didn't need any more of these characters. Probably one of those shows that's so expensive that it would've taken massive viewing figures to keep going.

Loved it too. I thought it would probably make it to 2 seasons and then be cancelled, so not even getting past 1 is really disappointing.

Bosch S6. 7.5/10. It's Bosch, very competent. Wasn't really invested in Jerry's storyline with Avrile. But the Daisy Clayton stuff was excellent imo.
Oh, and Maddi. I know I've said it before but Holy Christ, what a terrible actor.

Hijack - Apple TV+
A poorly written, poorly plotted, nonsensical attempt at making a 24 style TV show in sort of real time (it would have worked on broadcast TV to pad out its 45 minute episode run time to an hour) about a 7 hour flight from Dubai to Heathrow. Unsurprisingly for a TV show with that name the plane is hijacked and Idris Elba is the man with several plans that's trying to get home to try and mend his very, very dead marriage.
It is intensely stupid at times with some things never making any sense at all, the cleaners that are used in two countries seem so utterly pointless they can only have been involved to use up some time for the real time aspect.
So absolute shite and not worth bothering with? Not exactly, it's pure bilge that's true but being able to binge mindless garbage like this in a short period of time made it quite entertaining, if I had to watch an episode a week? Fuck that.
