I did notice that... of course Spider-man being Spider-Man there's nothing to say that's not a clone. With Spidey's track record it would probably be a good idea to have a couple of spares of every loved one to pull out when needed.

Resident Alien S1 8/10
Great mix of comedy, drama, sci-fi and (light) thriller. Alan Tudyk is perfect as the alien and the rest of the characters are a great mix of fun / lovable / funny as well.

I’m sure there’s some genius (read: geek) out there that can gauge whether it’s pre or post-portal based on when the Neogenic Nightmare crossover episodes took place… not me though. I’m just going to say the cameo happens before MJ got yeeted into the unknown.

X-Men '97
Just fantastic. I'm biased as I grew up watching the '90s series, and I love the 90's era of X-Men, but this is exactly what I want.
It's the best screen adaptation of the X-Men ever, and honestly one of the best things Marvel have ever done on screen.
10/10 most enjoyable and exciting and moving thing I've seen for a very long time.

X-Men '97 You have to navigate round a bit of clunky dialogue (I AM THE GOBLIN QUEEN!) but it’s a small price to pay. There’s some real heart in mouth moments in there. And incredibly, it’s so content-rich Wolverine comes out of it as a fairly minor character. [ I can understand why it's seen as clunky but honestly I just think it's staying true to the comics that it draws from. I like the fact that dialogue is frequently ridiculously dramatic and silly, because that's how comics are written, and I like that the show largely avoids he sort of eye-rolling self-awareness found in the mainline MCU.

Rebus 9/10 (BBC iplayer) I read a couple of the books way back, but this is a very well made adaptation with a cracking Rebus. It’s dark, funny, tense in parts and just very well made, Edinburgh looks gorgeous as always, even if we don’t spend long in the nicer parts. I thought the last episode spent a wee bit too long in eulogies, but they set it up for a second season beautifully and I really hope they make it. Well worth a watch, six episodes about 50mins each, I think That ain't John Hannah!

The Gentlemen 7/10
I'm not a Guy Richie fan but it was alright. There's too much of it and the geezer stuff is just mildly irritating. It's not funny, not sure if it's supposed to be.

Continuing a trend of being late to all the recent TV parties, we finished Shogun tonight. Damn, didn't know I needed feudal Japan in my life but there's a giant hole now and nothing to fill it. Outstanding. Nailed everything and what a beautifully shot/crafted bit of television. 9/10, felt like watching prime HBO at times.

Sugar (AppleTV) first 5 episodes 9/10, last 3 6/10
Towards the mid point I started to think there was a twist coming that I really didn’t want them to go with. Then they did.
I’d have been happy with a whole show going full on with the film noir style. Why they felt the need for the shift I don’t get and it made the whole thing a bit stupid and annoying.

Race Across the World S3 - BBC - as a mix between a travel show and a reality show I think they strike the balance really well and manage to build drama without it feeling fixed or overly manipulated in post. Some touching personal journeys along the way. Took a couple of episodes to get going, and of the three series it's possibly the weakest, but it was enjoyable filler, so if you liked the previous series you'll probably not be disappointed, but it won't convert anyone who wasn't already on board.

South Park: The End of Obesity - Paramount+
South Park take on Ozempic and the American Health Care system.
It’s fine. The commentary on American Healthcare and Insurance was probably the bit that works best. The Mad Max 2 references were fun but it’s not like South Park hasn’t done that before.
And I guess that’s the problem. There’s only so much mileage you can wring out of Cartman being fat and racist or Randy being stupid enough to fall for every current trend. The long form stories don’t particularly improve the South Park formula… I kind of wish Matt and Trey would move on and focus on something completely different at this point. They did that with Team America and that’s still probably one of my favourite comedies of the 2000s.

Arcane
Heard some pretty good stuff about this so thought I give it a watch and…
… they were right! It’s ace. One of those tv programs where it’s so assured in what it’s doing it’s all falls into place. Its universe is ridiculously strong. Also now want to play dishonoured again.

They did that with Team America and that’s still probably one of my favourite comedies of the 2000s. I watched that again quite recently and, sadly, found a good chunk of it sucks ass now. It is largely due to me being over my nihilistic ‘everything sucks’ period (which is why I’m also pretty much done with South Park) but it takes a proper dip in the second half when it starts covering its own arse with all the ‘both sides’ stuff. it really loses its energy and purpose and is just kind of shitty by the end. Proper libertarian arse gravy nonsense.

X-Men '97
Unpopular opinion alert. After all the glowing reviews on here I was expecting something really special but came away a bit disappointed.
It looks pretty much how I remember the original in my head. Memory being what it is that probably means it actually looks loads better but still, it's decidedly retro and not what you would call a great looking show by modern standards. It follows on from the original series and there's no quarter given to anyone who didn't watch that or doesn't remember all the nuances of something from 30ish years ago, with no recaps or standalone episodes to help reintroduce the characters. They are clearly only targetting fans of the original with this and yet there's little consideration given to the fact that said fans are much older now, it remains very decidedly a kids show with some truly overwrought dialogue that would have seemed dramatic to child me but now seems very cheesy.
The worst part though is the pacing, which makes everything feel so rushed. It gives the impression that the show-runners didn't expect to go beyond the initial band of episodes so had to squeeze every story they wanted to tell into one season of 30-minute episodes. Nearly all the characters get some really big stories (except Wolverine who contributes nothing except his constant bitching and might as well not have been there) with what felt like some big revelations but they're over so quickly it robs them of any emotional weight. It's one big wtf moment after another but with no time taken to really let events sink in, the impact they should have is lost. It also robs the show of any sense of timing, it feels like all these things happen in the space of a few days.
It feels a weird thing to say about a Disney series but they really should have stretched this out to 2 or 3 seasons and let it breathe a bit. It would have been much better for it.
I enjoyed it as a bit of nostalgia and it had some real potential but it's not masterpiece IMO. Not sure I'll bother with the 2nd season.

Sugar (Apple Tv) 7/10 Enjoyable enough private eye series with Colin Farrell searching for a movie mogul’s daughter. It’s spliced with old movie footage and has high production values and is generally very well done. After a very strong opening, it meanders a bit and doesn’t do the noir as well as LA Confidential. All in all, worth a watch but it does peter out a bit, despite a major reveal in the later episodes Pretty much my thinking although I liked the slower pace so didn't feel it meandered though can see why you felt it did. I loved the intro to the show and always watched it in full every time (I would always watch the Bosch intro too). That reveal though. It was always building to something and I was always expecting some deeper conspiracy or evil twunt at the center of it all but ... what the actual fuck?! Just odd.

crashV👀d👀 - yeah, they made a bit of a mess of that subplot. I thought after the reveal, it would really kick down, but it just petered out as though they’d run out of ideas or where to take it. I hope there’s another series, but won’t hold my breath.

Inside No. 9 S4 - 7/10
The live episode was pretty amusing. Must've had a little internet blip in the middle of it, so iPlayer got stuck on a spinning circle. I refused to reach for my remote for longer than I'd like to admit, thinking it must be part of it. "You're not fooling me twice damnit!"

Clarkson’s Farm S3
This series in particular focuses on showing the travails of turning a profit on a farm, along with the genuinely heartbreaking moments that come with rearing animals. I wouldn’t say it was undercut by Clarkson’s cheeky boy persona and the artifice that comes with creating his brand of entertainment, but sometimes the two don’t mesh. If anything seeing him try to game the system via the farm shop makes me side with the council on their decisions - it’s less a farm shop and more of a Jeremy Clarkson themed tourist attraction.
That being said, it’s a hell of a lot more watchable than Countryfile.
7/10
