Our son's primary school sent around a warning yesterday about "quite shocking" Squid Game content in Roblox. Of course, now everyone is checking it out. Some of my teacher friends have said that the kids are all obsessed with it. Basically games like Red Light Green Light recreated in Minecraft and Roblox on Twitch. Apparently they’ve been asking to play some of the games which is cute since it means they’re actually asking to play Whats The Time Mr Wolf and other Victorian playground games.

There are literally hundreds of k-dramas on Netflix. Yeah, I started watching them in lockdown after I completed english netflix. Can recommend: Uncanny Counter Sweet Home Sisyphus Hell is other people And Kingdom, obviously. Nice I was looking for K flavour content, yeah Kingdom is great, will check out the others, ton of Korean content on NF, didn't know where to start

Was talking to my daughter (11) about Squid last night. She knew everything about it! I'm like, what?! how do you know all this?! She then proceeded to show me the SG game on Roblox and the millions of reenactments on YouTube/TikTok. Exactly the same here.

Thankfully my boy knows full well it's an adult show and doesn't really want to check out too much of what he finds in case he sees something unsuitable.

Yeah, its ubiquitous pop-culture now. The girl got a bit of a head start on it because I started watching it the day it dropped and she sat and watched a bit of it with me on saturday morning when she wandered through the living room to forage for breakfast. Funnily enough, the ep we watched was no.2 (or maybe 3), the one where they have all quit squid game, so theres absolutely no squid gaming. Obviously she couldnt see what all the fuss was about and told her friends it was boring.

See, my son is the opposite. If he knows it might have content he shouldn't see, he absolutely had to watch it right now!

People are getting pretty het up about it but its not like most of my friends hadn’t seen Die Hard and Robocop and Terminator 2 and Predator by the time we reached secondary school.
I’d be more worried by the dripfeed of racism and sexism which colours the banter of the streamers kids find this stuff through than the shows themselves in the longer term.

I haven't watched it yet, but will make a judgement after that.

Theres a lot of CGI blood splatter and one of the gangsters nails the token psycho-bitch in a toilet which, depending on where you are on the 'violence is ok, just no sex' scale, might be a problem. Its just one scene but its pretty grimy.
The violence in and of itself is probably the mildest content. Its suitability probably rests on whether or not he grasps the depths of human depravity yet.

Not sure if you misinterpreted, but I'm pretty sure mrpon was referencing a specific scene in the show.

From the first two episodes it’s probably not too awful for most 11 year olds, but depends on the kid. No idea about the rest of the series and if that’s any worse.
Pretty sure I’d seen as bad at that age and the likes of Total Recall and T2 when I was slightly older.

A little out of sync, but I think that this is an appropriate place to drop this for fans of The Shield. This is a cast gettogether, after the entire show finished. There aren't really any spoilers, but really more of a love-in, with the cast. Really quite endearing.

Rome (S2)
Another show I would love to see another series of. This season isn't quite as good as the first, partly because it is missing on of the best characters (and actors to be fair), but it also feels more fragmented. It's still some of the finest TV made, and Pullo is still my idol :-)

Vigil (iplayer)
I only followed Line of Duty via the odd episode of Gogglebox and I thought that bodyguard one was a bit jumped shark over the top. I think I preferred this to what I saw of them. It was ridiculous and clearly an airport paperback thriller dressed up as prestige drama, but then I think taken on those terms all the nonsense and unlikely coincidences feels more forgivable.

Re squid games, there's at least two events which have brains splattered out from people's heads.

Yeah, my daughter (also 11) was wanting to play Squid Game maps on Fortnite last night, and watch Roblox Squid Game stuff on youtube. I said no because I'm an old fuddy duddy, and I definitely hadn't seen robocop when I was 11. I was kinda surprised how much horror content there is on Roblox and Fortnite tbh. Saw, Halloween, pretty much any horror movie you can name has a bunch of maps.

Vigil - 2/10
Finally finished it. What dross. Possibly the worst series of TV I've seen through to the end. Aside from perhaps the first 30 minutes of the last episode, it was mind-numbingly dull. I can't really think of any other redeeming parts to it. Every plot device and every character was dreadful.

Squid game would have been an 18 back in my day. I am not entirely sure how it is only 15. (But then I never really pay attention to ratings normally).
I don’t think there is any swearing (although I am probably just oblivious to it). It has quite a lot of violence and a sex scene. Violence includes murder with melee weapons, execution with guns and medical dissection. (It is never overly graphic and as of yet there has not been any horror, which is probably how it managed the 15).

You can get away with a lot in a 15 now. For an 18 you'd really need to dwell on stuff a la torture porn or have sexualised violence.

Ted Lasso S1 - 7/10
Just a little too schmaltzy for me. I think I have myself to blame also for picking at the football detail unnecessarily (final game of the season on a Sunday night, rather than afternoon - wut??), especially as the action is pretty well done for the most part.

Fargo s4
Went a bit too OTT with the Fargo quirkiness at the start but it all comes together nicely and leads to a satisfying and violent journey.
It's better than the 3rd season, not as good as the first 2.
