Utterly pointless. This trend of remastering games one gen later really needs to go away. It's an interesting seeing as how Spider-Man Remastered for the ps5 was well received. Whereas there seems to be a lot of cynicism for this one.

And if you bought physical it came with Miles Morales as part of the ultimate edition.

I dunno I think it is comparable. We don't know how it will be sold or the cost. I'm in the mind that this game doesn't need to exist just like Spider-Man Remastered didn't need to exist but here we are.

I'm in the mind that this game doesn't need to exist just like Spider-Man Remastered didn't need to exist but here we are. I'll happily eat my words if it's less than £50. I agree Spiderman didn't need to be remastered but at least the way it was offered had some added value. This'll just be a panicked gap filler now Sony realise their whole live service planned release calendar is kaput.

I think this was planned quite a while ago not far off what you think, although I don't think it was a reaction to the GaaS games tanking more that they've realised that they didn't have shit coming out with how long development is taking and this game fills a release slot for them. And it WILL sell. I mean if we really think about it a lot of their studios are only going to be releasing 1 game a generation now. We'll excuse Insomniac as they're insane.

I feel like some is people who have to buy everything and them some who were young during the ps4 era now having income to spend and want a shinier version that also applies to people here who will spend 800 quid on a console because it makes older games look a bit shinier.

It's an interesting seeing as how Spider-Man Remastered for the ps5 was well received. Whereas there seems to be a lot of cynicism for this one. I suppose the difference is that it was a 'generational' remaster of a well loved game, dragging it from the PS4 to PS5 whereas it seems like people generally don't really give a shit about this game? I dunno, I was similarly lukewarm for a remaster of Spiderman, tbh, this is not a new opinion I have, but I did enjoy it when I played it on PS+ and have to admit it was kinda worth it. The framerate and graphical fancies uplift were pretty transformational so, yeah, fine. I just can't see that being true of this at all, mainly because I thought the game was boring and couldn't really give a shit if they updated it to run inside my frontal cortex.

Surely Sony are only doing this stuff to plug the gap between their big hitters which seem to being taking longer and longer to make?
Maybe they could set more devs on smaller projects, Astro Bot has taken half the time to complete and seems to have done fairly well.

Astro Bot is an interesting one as it takes so many assets from previous games as far back as Rescue Mission for the PSVR which explains why 60 people were able to get this done in the speed they did it. At this point you're not getting anything from Naughty Dog et al until late 2025 mid 2026. Although we'll have to see when GTA is released as I doubt it's making 2025 and there'll be so many games having to change their release if it lands in 2026.

So we get robo dinosaurs doing a loop on hidden scaleletrix tracks in 4k 60fps with ray tracing now?

Definitely sounds like a release for the sake of it, just to tell investors. This cycle of taking 5+ years to make a game is coming to bite devs as there is nothing to put out, so pile resources into remasters and remakes. Used to be we would have a new Ratchet and Clank game every year or two. Different times now I guess for these AAAA games.

I have zero intention of playing HZD again, but the story, at least for me was compelling. I couldn't wait to unravel the next part of it, find out what actually happened.
Then the sequel came along and I think I've played about 5 hours.. and I could not be arsed. I have the exact same situation with GoW. I've played about 15 hours of Ragnarok and I just couldn't finish it. It bored me, despite loving the first game.

Also the issue of, oh I'll give it another go (12+ months later) and you end up having to start again because you can't remember how to actually play it or remember what it was you intended to do in whatever area you load back into. Then either you get back into it or you do the same again in another 12 months. Edit: oh and no I also don't intend to play this again. I completed the original release and got the DLC a few years later and never even started that properly. Got the latest one and I've put a good few hours into that but again I've not played that since as I can't be bothered.

Source for that, Jambo? I'd be genuinely amazed if either of the PS5 games used any PS4 assets and hadn't rebuilt everything. Astro Bot using some stuff from Astro's Playroom would make some sense but even those I'd be surprised if they hadn't touched again.

I suspect this remaster is also tied heavily into the LEGO Horizon game that's due soon, so that new/younger players who fall for that have a brand-new, shiny PS5 version to buy once they're done.
Same as TLOU Pt1 was ready for TV show viewers to jump in on.

They’re doing a Lego Horizon game!?
I can’t wait to explore every nook and cranny so I can collect all the characters, like…that guy with the weird face…and her, you know, that one who said the thing that time.

I think what bugs me about HZD, despite me liking the story.. none of the characters felt like this could carry a franchise. Feel all a bit weak sauce. Sure, Aloy is the franchise face, but there's just something I think Guerrilla Games have never been great at, which is why Killzone kind of is seen as this generic shooter.

Agree. They’re all just stoic and dull. None of them have any humour and the VO delivery is all flat.

Aloy could have been anyone, as I was waiting for that lovely man to give me some story.

It would be very typical for an official announcement of this to be overshadowed with the Switch 2 news. Zero Dawn came out a week before Breath of the Wild and Forbidden West before Elden Ring. Has always been in another franchises long shadow.

Has always been in another franchises long shadow. I wouldn't even say it's in it shadow. It's like in another universe although I always thought Horizon's closest comparison was Monster Hunter which it still doesn't come close to.

Most likely a new game as it would seem to be using the Forbidden West Engine because for intents and purposes the PC version of the OG Horizon at max settings would be the remaster. So we're looking at Last of Us Part 1 style thing here at full price.

Whereas there seems to be a lot of cynicism for this one. I think it's fine to remaster games, especially where the original game had issues, but the problem is that sooner or later remasters will be used as a replacement for developing original games. We may already be at that point, given the PS5 Pro has no original launch titles, and people are starting to notice, particularly when the original game didn't need remastering.
