Well, thats kind of the point. Fucking about for hours to make the number go up by one is the entire point of those games. Horizon, not so much.
Or maybe it is and Ive horribly misread the genre.

So…. they kind of fixed this, maybe? It seems like the gear in the DLC is much easier to upgrade, requiring far less mats (and rare mats) for each tier.
I’m genuinely surprised by how low level my stuff is even from finishing the game. Most most of my weapons were purple with just two upgrades and my armour was legendary with the first gated behind 5 fucking slitherfang grinders.
They haven’t actually lowered the requirements for anything else so the old gear is basically worthless now but it only took an hour to get a decent weapon and some good armour going so whatever.

I played through the DLC on story difficulty and just spammed explosive spears to one shot everything and I'm not even sorry. Re-learning everything the game throws at you for a 3 hour DLC was a hard no for me.
I might even do the same for Horizon 3 as I find the combat almost no fun whatsoever.

3hr DLC? That's a bit disingenuous.

It's not, the story took me about 3 hours. I'm not bothering with any of the side stuff.

Hmm, seems to strange to pay for and play something you thoroughly don't enjoy.

But I do enjoy it. Really like the story and the environments are stunning. I get enough from it that I'm happy to pay for it and tune the bits I think are shit down, which is another positive that you can do that.

Interesting. I do agree that it's great that it's so customisable in it's difficulty. I wish more games would do that.

I'd probably play more stuff just for the shinies and the narrative if they did it. Especially this open world stuff. When every encounter can become an absolute slog it makes for a frustrating level of progression. I had the base game on normal and then bumped it straight down to Story to enjoy the side plots post-game.

Stop enjoying something you bought the way you want to.
Down with that sort of thing.

Might even turn subtitles off on Horizon 3.

Might even turn subtitles off on Horizon 3. I used to leave subtitles on by default most of the time but I always noticed I was just focusing on the text rather than what was going on in the game. I remember the God of War reboot having terrible sized subtitles when it first came, like the tiniest writing.

I'm much the same but I really struggle with low frequency sounds for whatever reason so I miss shitloads of quieter stuff. Obviously I've done what any full grown man would do and completely ignored the issue for my entire life.

Yes, I am that guy that will say "What" 3 times and then just play the 50/50 game of saying yes when I didn't hear the third time.

I think most people do that. However if you are having trouble with your low frequency hearing go and see someone as hearing loss is linked to dementia in later life.

Just picked it up and enjoying being back in the world so far. Pretty fucking overwhelming being thrown straight into a fight with a combat system I've completely forgotten about. Decided to do a side quest next to get to grips with things and that got even hairier...
A bit sad starting off with a chat with Sylens, though.

I find it quite distracting.

Can be really useful in some games. Left 4 dead will show you stuff like, [Horde Incoming] before you actually see or hear it. Well handy for stuff like that

All that wailing, moaning, grumbling, Bible-bashing, garment-rending, and general gnashing of teeth over "Gayloy" from the usual suspects, and it turns out you can reject Seyka's advances at the end of the game?
Sure, doing so doesn't change the canonical implications, but all these homophobic assholes acting as though hardcore lesbian action was being thrust upon them could just have picked the "I'm not ready" or "This is too much" dialogue options!

Finished it just now. It's a solid enough bit of DLC and fairly sensibly priced too, but +1 for dropping it down to story mode just to get through the annoying combat.
It probably didn't help that I started the cauldron just before the last stretch, so had a gauntlet of boss fights.

I did the first mini boss a couple of days ago. In the Ascension Hall. I can't remember any of the melee moves, or how to use the valor surge. I love the game and I'm happy with switching weapons on the wheel mid fight. But really, there's too much..

Aye, there's definitely way too much going on. I was still getting to grips with the combat up until the very end, and started remembering stuff like melee combos into an arrow finisher when the blue circle appears (timing for that is ridiculously tight). I still had the invisibility cloak selected which is utterly useless, so probably should've experimented with the new valour surges that got added.
Valour surge is R1 while you've got the weapon wheel up.
The crafting and item wheel are shockingly bad. I just gave up with that yet again and kept it in my mount permanently.

It probably didn't help that I started the cauldron just before the last stretch, so had a gauntlet of boss fights. Heh, that’s exactly what I did. Found the first (only?) cauldron on the way to the last mission… But, yeah, it was good. More of the same but better. They seemed to have listened to some complaints so the interactions were a bit more natural and the gear was better and easier to level. The combat did seem hard at first but as soon as you dump your old weapons and start levelling the new ones up, it becomes quite easy. The bow you can buy from the trader is amazing and then it rains legendary weapons on you from side quests and main missions. By the end I was two shotting the spectres.

Yes, the crafting was pointless again. Just kept it on berries and a mount. ‘Attach element damage to your spear’ sounds nice but in practice it’s just another thing you’re never using.

I’m enjoying it still, it’s helped by the fact it’s just ridiculously good looking. The environments are very special indeed.
The crafting is a joke though. I spend more time in the menu crafting ammo than I do actually fighting, it’s seriously messed up!

You know that you can craft ammo from the weapon wheel, right?
