Fifteen quid!! That seems unusually low for Sony. Tempting. Yeah I was pretty surprised by the price too, I mean I spend that much on random shit at the best of times so it seemed like a no brainer.

I’ve pre-ordered it. Loved the main game so it was a bit of a no brainer for me.
HFW is one of the best looking things I’ve played so if Guerrilla have upped their game at all due to this being PS5 exclusive, it should be pretty special.

It's a shame user Worlds isn't here to tell us how much he's enjoying this, or not enjoying this on he's amazing TV paid for by his amazing job that may not actually be amazing.

Yeah I'll be grabbing this, not a bad price and they have history for creating decent DLC.

I think I'll be getting this as playing the main game now courtesy of PS+ and it's phenomenal. The best looking game I've ever played.

Worth noting that The Burning Shores takes place after the story, rather than integrated into it like The Frozen Wilds was in Zero Dawn, so anyone still playing through has some time before they can access the content.

I'm late onto the Forbidden West bandwagon (played the first game at launch, but my backlog has gotten in the way for the sequel), but blimey it's beautiful. I'm about 25 hours in and trying to strike a balance between exploring, doing side missions and the main quest before getting burnt out by the sheer scale of this game - it's fucking huge.
The DLC sounds very good, but I might be Horizon'd out by then, so will check it out later in the year probably.

mikeckPacing yourself by doing side quests in between main story missions is definitely the best way to play, but you’re probably looking at 80-100 hours to do everything. Be sure to do the quests you get from your companions, but otherwise you can in theory leave the other side stuff until after the main story. It gets much easier to explore, grab collectibles and get to far off mission markers after the story is done. (I won’t spoil why.) Some side quests do reward you with good gear though… which is useful to have when you’re playing the endgame missions.

If you're going for the plat, there's no shame in dropping the difficulty to Casual for the arena fights. Just saying...
What? I feel no shame in that!!

I struggled with a couple of the later ones even then. The combat in this really is a load of wank.
I don't think I've ever come back to an open world game to play the DLC. Bought it for the last game and loaded up a save, spent a few minutes trying to remember the controls and then just gave up. They definitely need a refresher course option on the main menu for people like me.

I agree, to be honest I struggle to play two games now as my brain can no longer quickly figure out the different control methods.
I like the fact this sounds like a new area to explore rather than just populating what is already there, though I doubt gameplay will change much.
I'm really just interested in the PS5 pretty graphics.

Remapping helps. I try to map a vaguely similar control scheme to each game now. Im playing Ghostwire at the moment and whoever thought of assigning dodge to L3 needs slapping.

Makes me wonder if they’ve retconned their original end to the DLC during development to kill off, or irrevocably alter, Sylens. Eg “I downloaded myself into a Stormbird and sound like a robot now.”

Given how recently he passed, I'd be very surprised if there was time for more than "In Memoriam" in the credits.

Played the DLC tonight, it's more of the same but I liked the base a game a lot though. The platforming is still showed upto be lacking as it just isn't on the level of something like Uncharted is. Regardless I'm enjoying it and it's still pretty as fuck.
One big thing I have noticed are Aloy's interactions with an integral character of the DLC and, yeah, I imagine the bigots are going to be out in force again.

Couldn't help myself after that trailer and watched a video of the DLC's final boss fight. Visually it's incredible as we've come to expect from these games, but the awful mustache-twirling dialogue from the bad guy piloting the horus, combined with the constant quips from the protagonist and her partner (who don't seem to be taking the apocalyptic horror awakening in front of them all that seriously) are the final nail in the coffin for this series for me personally. It has fully transitioned into the Marvel zone. I'm sure many will love it for that, but it's a big nope from me. The sense of dread from even being in the same room as a dead horus in the first game, knowing what they are and what they're capable of, was almost too much to bear. Here it has become just another machine to take out by shooting at the glowing spots. And not even a faceless malevolent entity that can't be reasoned with, but a mere vehicle for some ridiculous, cackling human villain. Oh well. I'm still very interested in buying the remaster of HZD, which remains one of my all-time faves and absolutely nailed the storytelling and world-building for me.

Horizon 3 has been all but confirmed by Guerrilla, apparently. I'm not exactly psyched by the news, given how much I disliked the story of Forbidden West, and hated the way in which that game ended; however, I do love the world they've created, and several of the characters are downright great. No doubt I'll plonk down my £70 like a total schmuck whenever the threequel comes out. Bigots in certain comments sections are already swearing off H3 due to the DLC "interactions" Jambo mentioned - sad, but by no means surprising. Meanwhile, the comments section under an IGN movie review is a total shitshow, due to the subheading, "Does watching Nazis die horrible deaths ever go out of style?" (which, apparently, is hurtful to Nazis). This is why we can't have nice things, people!

I’m happy to know there’s a Horizon 3 on the way, but it was pretty much a foregone conclusion, surely. I doubt it’ll be with us for a few years yet.
I made a start on the DLC which is, admittedly, more of the same so far, but it’s stunning to look at (you can see the graphical improvements clearly when high up and looking out over long distances) and the characters and story are engaging.
I must say I did feel a touch of sadness during the opening meeting with Sylens… I hope they can complete his narrative arc in a satisfying way… there’s too much left unresolved just to write him out, and yet I’d struggle to think of any other actor who could fill Lance Reddick’s shoes…
Anyway, early impressions are that if you liked the main game, you’ll like the DLC. That’s probably all that needs to be said.

They need to improve and streamline the combat a lot in 3. Hit the glowy bit with the right ammo type needs a revamp.

I think the biggest thing is changing the animation blending and by association the platforming and climbing because it's far too loose and clumsy for what the game expects you to do. Looking at how Naughty Dog do it would be a good start.

I actually *like* the combat and traversal in Horizon - far more than the equivalent elements of The Witcher 3, of which I'm now eager to see the back - but the narrative veered so far off the rails in Forbidden West, it's hard to see how they could pull it back from the brink and create a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.
Lance Reddick will be sorely missed in the franchise, regardless of where it goes from here. Dude had such presence.

The combat is not awful, it's just so dated and it's a faff with the amount of weapons and ammos for different dinos. Hone it and make it a bit more dynamic. It feels very early 2000s with glowy bits and conviently placed hazards to take advantage of.
Love the games, the combat just felt stale in the sequel.

I agree. The combat is fine, just too fiddly and fights go on too long, which inevitably means I avoid them at all costs. I like the ambition of the encounter design, but it needs distilling into something fun.
I think the traversal is good. In fact I prefer it to Uncharted and it reminds me of good Tomb Raider, where you do actually need to think about how you get from A to B. I don't mind a little frustration if it means I have some agency.
About 20 hours in and it's a very good open world game set in a very well realised apocalypse, with a lacklustre story and mediocre combat. There is a lot to do and I think the exploration is good, but it's the graphics that boost it up into near-greatness. I wish Aloy was a bit more interesting!

The fundamental problem is that its based pretty slavishly on a 15 year old template, which is why the new one feels so so played out. They need to move away from it just being 'Assassins Creed but Robot Dinosaurs'.
I dunno what that looks like but I would take a shorter, more compact, story driven game over another 50 hours of map spam and fetch quests.

It's kind of funny to me, looking back at when GTA V got me into gaming in the first place.
Back then, I was all about massive open worlds. "There's so much freedom! So many icons on the map! Such value for money!"
Nowadays, having got into gaming to a *far* greater extent than I'd ever anticipated, I find myself craving linearity.
