I'm very confused at how sharp this looks in performance mode, it doesn't do well with hair of moving foliage but texture detail looks almost sharper than the quality mode. I like how smoothly it runs but shiny mode looks better overall for me. Something off about performance mode. Might just be I'm too used to shiny mode by now.

Has anyone else had another update hit tonight? Does seem a lot smoother/faster in shiny mode.

I've not noticed one, but I haven't loaded it up in months it's probably not a priority for update on my console.
do you have a 120hz TV? Could be it got a 40fps quality mode patch similar to Ratchet.

Got out into the main Western chunk of the map last night. I only normally hoover up around half the side stuff I stumble across, but I've done pretty much everything that has popped up for me on this so far. Some of the side quests take you to some stunning locations.

I thought the side quests were pretty much all stellar in this. They never really felt like filler as opposed to properly structured and thought out missions, much like the main story quests are. All of it kept me away from the main quests for a long time.

Yeah, I'm at the point where I've done all the side quests and I'm a bit gutted having to go onto the main quest.

Loved it, although there were a few annoyances such as the melee combat. So only about 90% of the actual gameplay then?
Even if you didn't want to melee, pretty much every enemy had a special move that made them able to move over impossible distances in zero time in an unavoidable move forcing you to melee the fuckers.
Nah, there was only one that *really* had a homing attack. And they were indeed pretty tough. But the big fuckers like thunderjaw, tideripper and slitherfang could all be done ranged.

Haven't had a chance to play for a few weeks so stuck the performance mode on without even looking at quality again.
Yeah, it's fucking amazing. It looks ridiculously good.

Reinstalled for a revisit. Finished it too quickly and wasn’t impressed by the last 3rd but it’s a beautiful game and lots of sidequests I could get stuck into/haven’t done yet.
Will turn it on this week and have a look at this improved performance mode.

I think this might have the most boring skill tree I have seen in one of these games. It’s impressively dull.

Nah, the worst I've seen of late is Assassin's Creed Valhalla with its 1% bullshit.

Before I dumped this for Elden Ring I stopped when you get to Chainscape. Going to try again, I'd be as well restarting from scratch after so many months I suppose?

Nah, the worst I've seen of late is Assassin's Creed Valhalla with its 1% bullshit. This is far more bland. I’m only lvl 15 and am sat on 9 points and there’s nothing worth spending them on. Increase my weapon stamina a bit so I can then use the incredibly boring skills I don’t ever bother with? Nah, you’re alright. Unlock another incredibly unexciting special ability? Make food effects last slightly longer? Hmmm. Choices choices. And why is so unnecessarily big? Having to scroll further doesn’t make it more impressive.

Some of the skills under Hunter are incredibly OP. Especially the one with bolt launchers.

I often ended up with loads of skill points that I had little interest in spending as nothing seemed that interesting after getting the bits I wanted. Normally new skill points are exciting, in this they rarely were.

I think I finished with spare points and un-unlocked skills.
If they were determined to have a skill tree they should have had ammo carry upgrades or something on there. Give you something worthwhile to unlock and it also gives a tiny bit of respite from all the fucking around gathering resources.

I definitely didn't enjoy the exercise of hunting for specific resources to upgrade equipment especially as some of it was almost next to impossible to obtain because of RNG Jesus.

Its probably the least completed game I’ve finished recently almost purely because of that. Any quest/errand/upgrade/unlock that needed resources just got left on the shelf after a while.
I still can’t believe it gated overrides behind resource collecting, too. Absolutely pointless. Like there wasn’t enough busy work already.

There's so much fluff to the systems of it all. Too many weapons, too much resource collecting and I don't think I ate food once outside the first side quest for it.

Agreed. I did enjoy the game, but I'd hoped for a sizeable step forward compared to the original, and extra busywork really didn't cut the mustard on that score. The glider was kind of cool, I guess.

I unlocked one of the tools to get into one of the many different locked off bits in this earlier. Went back to an area to try it out and see what exciting treasures it would uncover, to find a chest that gave me 2 metal shards and 2 metal blocks.
Don’t think I’ll be bothering to hunt down any more.

Whelp, I'm enjoying this more than I enjoyed the first game. That is, admittedly, a very very low bar to clear.
What's odd is the pacing. I think I completed the original in under 30 hours, but I'm already at 12 hours in this one and I haven't even reached the titular Forbidden West. Definitely a lot of busy work, but as a self-confessed open world addict I don't mind that so much.
It's unforgivable that the traversal is as bad as, if not worse than, the original though. The combat is clicking more, not that I've had much of a challenge to this point, but the RPG elements with so many skill trees seems... unnecessarily fiddly. It's not Ass Creed Valhalla bad, but again that's a low bar to clear.
Fuck but I'll be glad when this new console generation actually begins. Hopefully there'll be a new idea or two.

Sony never have to release a new game ever again. I look forward to playing the same 4 games in ever-increasing levels of shininess for the rest of my life.

Fucking hell. If it's a free patch then great, but it's already 4K/60 and looks absolutely fine.
