I kept getting told my pouch was too small but I didn't really understand it. So I thought I needed the upgrade but it called for a bird's feather or something so I gave up on the pouch altogether given there was zero chance I was going to start bird hunting.

Oh god... The constant "pouch is full" chatter from Aloy before the patch was infuriating.
Bird hunting wasn't too bad either tbh. I just googled rough locations and they really weren't hard to find if you knew where to go (pretty much any sandy beach for pelicans)

I think the upgrade system may be the worst part of the game. There seemed to be quite a few animals/ materials that you never naturally ran into through the entire game and there is more than enough bush work to be getting in with to be arsed with running around with yet another shopping list.
And then when you did find an animal RNG meant you never got the bit you wanted.

Bloated is the word I'd use to describe this game. There's simply too much of everything. Weapon types, skills, side quests, collectables, elemental damage types, tribes, parts, tasks, map markers, stats, armors, enemy forts. You could strip back so much of all that and be left with a better game.
That said, I'm now 35ish hours in and am mostly really enjoying it. It has managed to reproduce the two things I loved about HZD: an intriguing sci-fi story with mysteries, twists and drama, and some really intimidating battles where you're dropped into the thick of it against seemingly overwhelming odds. I'm playing it on the hardest setting which is still a pretty relaxing experience compared to Elden Ring.

It's only really bloated if you don't care about it all but aim to play it all. If you don't care and don't play it, there's as much as you want.

That's true for things like collectables and side quests, but the excessive number of weapon and ammo types, weaves, upgrades and elemental damage types (which are essential to use on Very Hard) make it really awkward to compare weapons when buying from a weapon seller, or to know which types of weapons to equip for example. It just seems needlessly complex. Shock traps, advanced shock traps, vertical shock traps, advanced vertical shock traps... each of which take up a separate item slot... come on, that's absurd.

Honestly I've barely used any of the multitude of traps and the like that it gives you, I use two bows and that's it and I've had no difficulties or felt that I should or want to use the other stuff. Basically I think you can use as much or as little as you want and the game doesn't bat an eyelid or say you should be doing things differently. Like I've said before the game is clearly aping the Monster Hunter games and all the options it gives you, if you want to use the tools then great if not then that's fine too, there are obviously some people out there who want and do use everything it offers you. I don't think there's anything wrong with that especially as the game doesn't force their use down your throat.

Oh yeah, having to collect materials for overrides. That is ridiculous.
They are pretty much worthless anyway and absolutely not overpowered so I cannot fathom why they would gate them so hard. Lock something else behind the cauldrons or, gasp, do something else.

Yeah I never really understood overrides either despite completing all the cauldrons. I also never really used overrides anyway even for a mount.
It's also difficult to see which outfit or weapon is better, so I normally just stuck with the best tier I had. Upgrades were hard to come by but then not sure I would notice the difference anyway, unless it have me bundles of ammo.

I used mount overrides quite a lot but using them for fighting is pretty much pointless as all they really do is draw aggro and then turn on you when the timer runs out.

I've just had the west opened up after that epic ambush. Really enjoying the game so far but what some better loot.
My outfit and bow are both crap.
The HDR on this is incredible, love it when it turns to night and you can see fires and blue lights clearly from miles away.

I’ve never seen a single fish in this game. They were abundant in the first game. In this one, there’s little “graphics” fish (in the same way there are butterflies or something) but no fish you can actually catch. Rivers and streams and bodies of water appear to be lifeless. And yet the pouch upgrades call for all manner of fish parts. So it’s like we have extra bloat from added complication to the upgrades collectible shit, but the upgrades get stalled because there’s no fucking fish anywhere. Fish locations get marked on your map.. And, you have to swim up to them. You don't shoot them.

There's a spot with a Frostclaw and about 4 or 5 Fire Fanghorns. Override a fanghorn to 'aggresive' mode then hide. It attacks the other fanghorns and tends to do some decent damage to the Frostclaw. And then the Frostclaw kills it anyway. Then go and override another one if there are any left. Works like a dream.

It's a bit tedious, but nothing like the grinding of Monster Hunter. Currently trying to upgrade the legendary weapons from the Arena. Found a spot to kill a Tideripper with zero damage. I've got a decent spot to take down Thunderjaw and Tremortusk as well. Stormbird still slightly challenging, and need to work out best approach for the Dreadwing. I'm >100hrs in now. Just completed the Rebel Camps to get the Sunscourge bow. I stopped briefly and admired the snow textures yesterday - the sparkle of the sunlight was really quite impressive.

My first encounter with a Stormbird this time around took a few goes, in HZD I'd rope launcher the fucker to the ground then wail on it. I haven't got a rope launcher so it was a bit more difficult and I discovered firing a huge burst of bolts when you can't aim upwards when you do it was a bit of a waste of ammo.
I've got so much left to do but I'm enjoying my time in the world, makes a change from trying to drive on the wrong tyres in the rain on long races in GT7.

I’ve just been mainlining it while doing some of the side quests that cross my path. I’m surprised, after how the first game was among my all-time favourites, that I just hate playing this. I find everything about it tedious.

I find everything about it tedious. I don't quite hate it but I'm definitely disappointed after adoring HZD. For me that game was lightning in a bottle. This feels a bit like the textbook unnecessary and derivative sequel.

It's annoying when you want to buy loot you need money AND special components. Should just be cash.
And when do you start finding good loot? I'm relatively early on but still only have the starter outfit. Everything I find is green rarity.

A lot of the good loot comes from side quests, especially early on.

I traded this in uncompleted.

Cba'd even with the story tbh.
As with aubergine, I reall enjoyed the first game. The gradual reveal and the story had me hooked.
This one? Meh.
At least alastair is having fun.

Only now is it apparent that EG were on to something with their review, and all other publications are sheep.

The rhetoric within the EG community is slightly worrying, in that nobody will even entertain EG's take on the game, and instead believe EG have "got it in" for the Horizon games, or that it's a joke of some kind.

Finally finished the story. Such I pity I didn’t enjoy playing this. Hopefully the trade-in price is still as high as it was when I checked a few days ago.

Wasn't this kind of the case with the first too? EG thought it was fine, lots of others raved, people criticised EG, and then... it was fine.

I really enjoyed the first game but gave the new one a miss due to the big ER stomping just after its release. Sounds like I made a good choice. Just a pity it has not lived up to its potential. I will definitely get round to playing it as I do like some dinobots, probably go for a disk version so I can resell it if need be.
