Nah, you got it wrong boys. Only pure Alphas confident in the influx of vagina they're constantly getting would intentionally treat their partner like shit, letting them know they hold in contempt to play a video game, nay a video game with an embarrassingly poor script with delusions of a Hollywood film. User Worlds is that alpha. We all need to learn from him.

I kinda agree, actually. It’s really quite rare I actually give a shit about some piece of video game exposition a stiff faced character is delivering. They’re often at daytime soap level, at best, delivered while some character glitches in and out of a hedge in the background HELLO UBISHAFT But the whole can still be more than the sum of it’s parts with gaming because there’s something more involving about being in direct control of a character- games can lack the fitness of films sometimes but they can still equal them because you’re more invested personally.

Aye. Narrative exposition is always wank, especially in a visual medium that can really do it all better. But game design is hard, and players don’t pay attention and then skip the dialogue anyway.
But take something like SotC. Not all that much story to speak of, but it’s definitely more than functional for the purpose of motivating the player to engage. And it delivers more emotion in the back end than 95% of story-based, dialogue heavy stuff.
With Horizon the story is more than good, and better than a lot of other examples, but (some of) the writing and delivery is the bit that lets it down.

Probably looking in the wrong places for a good story. How many action blockbusters actually have good stories? Loads don't (and are still massively popular)
Plenty of games with great stories and writing about if you look for them

The difference is that you are spending 2.5 hours tops with an action blockbuster. If a massive AAA game is asking for 40, 50+ hours of my time, them no, I don't think it's too much to ask for the narrative and dialogue to not be cookie cutter garbage. "Gameplay" can only take me so far.
FWIW I thought HZD had an interesting main plot. It was just all the other open world junk that dragged it down. It bored me, which is pretty impressive for a game about robot dinosaurs.

Eh, the gameplay is there to make up the rest of the time. They are games foremost. If you resent the gameplay, you should probably play different games or watch a film

I think we're forgetting that there are plenty of games not just limited to AAA that have great stories. To say that a majority of games ever released have sub par stories is some grade A bullshit.

If you resent the gameplay, you should probably play different games or watch a film I... don't resent the gameplay? It was probably the best thing about HZD (the human encounters were rubbish though) But after a while, that is not enough. It's just gameplay for no reason, or basically no reason. A large chunk of that game consisted of dead-eyed NPCs asking me to do Open World Shit: find these berries for me, kill that thing for me, complete this timed challenge for me. And that feels like it's just wasting my time. (and yeah I know a lot of it is optional, but a shitty side dish still leaves a bad taste in the mouth, even if the rest of the meal is better)

Anyway, this is probably going to be a fairly common opinion, but... Elden Ring is so very much What I Want from an open world game, that I think it'll be the sort of thing that ruins other, similar games for me. The map is sparse with icons, the world is a place I want to explore and be surprised by, the story is minimalist but still very effective, the gameplay rules even though I die all the time.
And, crucially, I don't get idiots asking me to find berries for them. It's a revelation!

I'm definitely at an open world fatigue point so will probably finish this and have a bit of a break before I start Elden Ring. (even if I know it doesn't have the same icon vomit all over the map) Just focussing on doing stuff that I enjoy in this at the moment and mentally filtering out most of the stuff on the map. Tallnecks all seem pretty great (saved last night at the tree village one), artifact puzzles or whatever they're called are nice diversions. About the only busy work I'm doing is pinning weapon upgrade jobs and powering through those. Annoyingly you can only pin the next level, so need to travel back to a work bench and then pin again if you're missing a part in another step. Fast travel in this is fantastic having come from DL2 and its ridiculously limited system. It's nice setting a distant waypoint on the map on your way to hunt something for upgrade parts and unlocking several fast travel points on the way just by wandering near them. Main story has been pretty decent in this despite what Worlds says. Just did the Poseidon mission, then the SOS call bit and brought Beta back to base.

I imagine I'm well behind the curve on HFW, but I've just unlocked the fire thingy on my spear. So far the game is everything I had been hoping for. I almost feel like I want to splurge some cash on one of these:

Thats about where I am. I just completed a full set of salvager mission hoping to get some armour but it seems like I need to do all of them to get anything so fuck that for a game of soldiers.

They really went above and beyond to make the PS5 look ugly. I've yet to be granted the opportunity to give Sony or Microsoft money but the look of the PS5 actually gives me pause

I enjoyed doing a stealth run through the rogue Tenakth camp. Once I get through the current 'dungeon' I think I'll head back to Chainscrape and do the melee pit stuff so I actually understand close combat a bit better.

I'm quite far into this and when you're actually hunting certain machines for parts for upgrades it really does feel very Monster Hunter, especially as you find harder versions of the same machine.

I also got a black controller too as the white one looks shit (and grimy thanks to the little logos) So yeah, I just spent an extra £75 to get the console that should've just been a default option.

I didn't know that was possible. I at the least was of a mind to wait for an all black version. I actually really like the look of the Xbox and it seems more readily available (never had one before). The main thing stopping me would be the potential for a Bloodborne remake/sequel. Exclusives super work

It is unique I will give it that. Fortunately, after a while you forget about it. You can always try hiding it but easier said than done due to the size of the beast.

Mine is hidden. I black plastidip'd the faceplates early on but its still too ugly to have out. It does mean Ive never updated the firmware on the pads but whatever.

I like the white controllers, they look tidy. Don't really care about the console itself as I can't see it. The only console I have visible is the OLED Switch (again, white looks crisp).

Less is definitely more when it comes to stories. Our brains can only remember so much, and must assume that 99% of dialogue is unimportant, as we only remember the highlights. There's really no point stuffing a visual medium (game or film) full of dialogue. SotC is a textbook example of less is more. I'm playing Mass Effect Legendary Ed. at the moment which is at the complete opposite end of the scale, where 90% of the game is "winning" at conversations... but even then most of the dialog is superfluous. Same with Witcher 3. It must take so much effort to put all these conversations together too, effort that could be spent on other aspects of the game.

They really need to introduce the Horizon equivalent of a Tranq Bomb for when you've inflicted the shocked state on a machine. Conversely, MH doesn't allow you the opportunity to shoot off parts from a distance. Or rather, it takes you a lot longer to break parts and cut tails.

Annoyingly, they made the air blast arrow things very expensive in this one. Tbf, they were quite OP in the last one but they take a dumb amount of resources to craft in this. They actually nerfed the entire sharpshot blow line, really. The sniper arrows aren’t as good, either.
