I'm quite far into this and when you're actually hunting certain machines for parts for upgrades it really does feel very Monster Hunter, especially as you find harder versions of the same machine. They really need to introduce the Horizon equivalent of a Tranq Bomb for when you've inflicted the shocked state on a machine. Conversely, MH doesn't allow you the opportunity to shoot off parts from a distance. Or rather, it takes you a lot longer to break parts and cut tails. I was thinking that because it's extremely clear a lot of people at Guerilla love Monster Hunter as the system is almost copied wholesale especially with the introduction of food boosts. They even have the same annoyingly long animation time it takes to get up after being hit.

Annoyingly, they made the air blast arrow things very expensive in this one. Tbf, they were quite OP in the last one but they take a dumb amount of resources to craft in this. They actually nerfed the entire sharpshot blow line, really. The sniper arrows aren’t as good, either. There is a sharpshot bow ability that is OP as hell I think it's called the bracing shot that essentially ends any battle before it starts.

Ive found enhanced hunter arrows are good enough for most fights. They do good physical and tear damage, a shot with 3x usually tears a component and they only need wood and shards to make so you can spam them like mad.

I may simply need to 'git gud', but the boss fight I've just reached is annoying me. (i.e. I died twice)

Scan it and see what level its on. Thanks to farting about with side-quests and whatever, Im now at least five levels over pretty much any enemy, so they are all going down quite quickly. A bit of weapon upgrading and a few errands should sort you out.

It obviously helps if you target their weaknesses. 2x trap caster electric traps in a row are great for any big thing that's weak to elec. Then just get in their face while they're down and spam critical strikes. (that and silent strike are handy things to focus on upgrading). Nimble smaller dinos can often jump over or walk around trap caster traps, but the big bois just seem to plough straight through them.
You can turn on stuff like auto heal (and easy loot as mentioned previously!) if you set difficulty to custom.
Having said that I got to about level 18 on normal difficulty and left the game for a week, then came back to it and dropped it down to easy.

Every line is grunt. It's like they asked her to be lady Vin Diesel.

I may simply need to 'git gud', but the boss fight I've just reached is annoying me. (i.e. I died twice) To be clear, it's the fight where you have to shoot parts of the recluse spider. I don't think that's a spoiler.

I don't think I had Aloy say she was going to put anything in her stash while playing tonight, hurrah.

I don't think that's a spoiler. That one I did first time on hard, once I realised that nothing else matter apart from shooting the bits off I just kept moving, using concentration to give yourself as much time as possible is a good idea as is the accessibility function that slows down time even more in the weapon wheel. It makes switching weapons or crafting ammo a lot easier when you've got time to think.

Couple of guys here are too serious. I’m only winding you up.
But yeah, most stories are garbage. One chap on the page before hit the nail on the head.
HFW has gone from a solid 9 to an 8/10 for me. At first, its world was stunning - and still is - but that’s been tainted by dialogue that takes up more time than combat.
Combat itself is feeling repetitive. It’s all too easy.
Having to scan every single machine is frustrating. Why not show me the weakness of enemies I’ve scanned a hundred times before, quicker?
The equipping of outfits and ‘load outs’ is a chore. For example, you have outfits that are better suited to stealth, and special abilities, yet you have to manually click through multiple menus to change it all. Why not have a quicker way to save a load out.
Outfits, those special R1 (in menu) abilities, all totally useless. Haven’t even swapped my ability once because cba.
The dialogue though. Wtf. People rave about the lore in this game, the story. Yes it has potential from a sci-fi angle, but they’ve destroyed it by making you spend more time on dialogue and less time actually doing something skilful or fun.
Finishing this and Dying Light 2 off now, as quickly as possible. Both let down by god damn awful story and dialogue.
Elden Ring sits installed on my PS5 ready and waiting.

Some of the side quests have pretty great self contained stories. Just randomly came across the Deluge quest last night and was properly gripped by that.
Walking up to a green quest marker in a camp and getting 5-10 minutes of dialogue that I really struggle to not skip... Not so gripping!

Yeah, I think I did that one last night and its exactly what I was talking about a few pages ago. Youre pootling along to an objective and you see some guys. 'Help, our village was covered in a landslide'. An hour later, youre back to the main quest. And, wrt the above, once youve scanned something once you can just hop into the menu and look at its beastiary entry if something gets all up in your grill so you dont have to sit there with your thumb up your arse while it tries to eat your face off.

What is slightly annoying is when you scan a new machine, if you then die during combat, the reset point is before the scan. Great big snake thing, I am looking at you. I figure I'll see one again at some point to scan it again.

The actual gameplay stories can be fun, e.g sidequests are put together well, nice bite size stories.
What I refer to with poor script is the actual long dialogue in the main story.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun game, looks unbelievable at times, with an epic open world.
Last thing; melee isn’t good. Ghost of Tsushima was far superior.
All roads are leading to Elden Ring, so I’m hoping combat and focus on playing the game trumps, rather than listening to hours of dialogue and wading through hundreds of map icons.

alastair - getting all machine scans is one of the only missable trophies in the game, so hopefully you haven't missed it for good!
