The camera work has got a lot more masturbatory over the last season or so but other than that, I can't remember the last episode I didn't enjoy.
I might have to watch the Gene bits again if the last few episodes are going to tie that story up. It's been so long and those sections are so fleeting I can barely remember any of those scenes.

Probably best summarised as: he runs a Cinnabon franchise in Buttfuck, USA (Nebraska or something?). Every once in a while, he furtively and nostalgically watches his "Better call Saul" TV commercials at night. One day he freaks out at the mall, thinking he's being watched and convincing himself his past has caught up with him, had an anxiety attack and passes out. That's it, I think? |

See, I thought that was about the sum of it. But I keep seeing mad, sprawling theories online that the last couple of episodes are going to be entirely in Gene's timeline to tie everything up like I've missed something really important in those scenes.

Found the latest a bit dull, more about tying up the plots in a very business like fashion. Fascinating to see what happens next though.

The episode was full of conclusions to certain character arcs, Mike's and Fring's until Breaking Bad, there's no reason we'll see them again, Kim's - she's not died but there's the reason we never see her in Breaking Bad, it's possible she'll be back in a Gene based episode and the death of Jimmy McGill, he's now fully Saul Goodman as we've skipped ahead.
The wine tasting was him trying to just have some time off from his job but he just can't do it when left alone. There's been hints that Gus is gay for a long time, especially his relationship with his business partner Max which is a lot of the reason why he hates the cartel. Surprising to see Reed Diamond in such a small role. The photos at the memorial were from Patrick Fabian's Instagram account if anyone was wondering. |

It was to demonstrate just how little he allows himself some enjoyment. After Max's death, he's realised the risks of allowing anyone close to him. He was clearly interested in the wine bloke and has a rapport with him but he doesn't want to allow anything that might ruin his plan/ hurt anyone else.
It shows he's singled minded to the point where he derives very little satisfaction from life. Makes him quite tragic.

Also we're now around Walt and Jesse joining. The new masturbator that Gus has is Badger.

I liked that scene. It's not as if Breaking Bad never took time off (even a whole episode off!) to just focus on characters with no plot progression.

Just watched the latest episode. It’s good, but I was struggling to remember a character’s earlier story that leads to the events here. Once you remember, or look it up, it makes perfect sense but there’s been a fair amount of water under the bridge since.

That was..... verging on potentially pointless. I hope this gathers some momentum for the last 4 episodes, unless there was something important in 10 I am overlooking other than saying stuff about the character that is already firmly established by now. Not really a spoiler I'm just being extra cautious. |

Because of Bob's heart attack and the episode being delayed they had to recast the character the whole episode hinged on. They could have done more to remind you who he was. |

That really suffered from lack of continuity in the actor. Especially as the original is a very good actor, who was much more menacing than the new guy.
However, it was a real curve ball and I genuinely didn't expect it to go that way. It does lead me to assume the show finishes with him putting the suit back on.
Which...I dunno...means he's not learned anything?

Spoilerish geefe(I did say ish) The change in character from a tonal perspective was poorly judged as well. He goes from somewhat menacing and outgoing to "nervous around new people" and gets whiny about the heist prep. A rare mis-step |

They'd have been better served reshooting the scene in the mall and playing him differently. It's such a shame, really and it can't be helped but it's a real tonal shift that took me out of it, particularly as I rewatched the original in preparation.
As others said - we go from menacing to bumbling.
I'd have also placed this one somewhere else in the series. One thing BCS has struggled with is ending each series and this feels no different, especially as they flat out announced Walt and Jesse. Which means we're going to go BACK to BB era and will feel awkward, given the excellent transition in the previous episode.
I've seen it said that BCS will benefit from a rewatch when it's binged, as it will hang together better but I'm not convinced. They've done well to wring 6 series out of it but I don't think it ever really recovered from the loss of Chuck.

I don't think I'd have remembered his face anyway, and I certainly didn't remember he was a cab driver... I assumed he was part of a gang, given his intimidating, pushy attitude towards Jimmy, and the 'muscle' standing behind him. They really should have given the character a memorable costume asset, like a hat or something, or an eye patch. In fact, didn't he have a flat cap, or am I misremembering that? |

That felt like a giant filler episode, with a weird pointless heist in it. I assumed Jimmy missed 'The game' and decided to flex his slippin' Jimmy muscle as some sort of high risk way to fight off the boredom of Gene's life. Which made no sense, because why freak out over being recognized and then turn around and jeopardize his cover? Then I read it's the guy who recognized him and he's been recast. Makes much more sense
for him too freak out over being recognized and then devise a way to neutralise the threat to his cover:
dupe this guy into committing crimes to create a mutual self destruct situation and assure he stays mum.
Getting to scheme, plan and manipulate the guards and store manager is a nice bonus.
