Again, it's not driving to the mission that's the problem. It's driving to the mission and then driving to the actual mission with an NPC in tow. In a weird way it can break immersion too because all that open-world/reactive stuff isn't allowed when you have an NPC in the car/story mission on the go. I will counter this with something I posted years ago during a gta4 play through. Early on you get involved in a taxi firm and have to do some missions for the owner, Roman. After completing the main part of the mission I had to drive him back to the taxi firm. As he was chatting to me, the car was beaten up badly(bad driving) and ended up catching fire on a flyover. We both got out of the car but Roman didn't get away in time and got blasted over the wall by the resulting car explosion and fell a good few storeys to the ground below. Slightly panicked about the outcome and thinking I would have to do the mission again, I watched from the flyover an ambulance turning up, chucking the guy in the back and driving off. An hour in game time later, I got a call from Roman saying to pick him up from the hospital as he'd been in an accident. I go pick him up, he continues his story, drop him off at the business, the mission ends. Gobsmacked I was. So that interaction was coded in, but I always thought GTA would be the perfect setting to introduce some really cool server based AI. They have a city with presumably a couple thousand people in it, it would be so awesome if the world and people reacted somewhat realistically or just in unexpected ways.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but I wonder if the main campaign can be done co-op between those two main characters shown in the trailer.

Where GTA V was a let down was that the gameplay itself was middling between acceptable and shite. That could fly in the previous games because it was new and shiny but V had gunplay and driving that was wonky as fuck. It was also completely lacking in enjoyable characters. GTA IV had Roman, Niko, Packie, Jacob and others - V gave you 3 to play as, none of which really matched it. I'd say I liked Trevor the most as he was vaguely meta. Michael had potential but became insufferable and Franklin was incredibly bland. I also found the world somewhat underutilised and the non LA parts were incredibly dull. Rik Mayal also explained my thoughts on driving to start a mission, having started the mission, pretty well. I disagree on basically all of that. Pretty impressive, Geefe.

Only bit I agreed with was Franklin being bland.

To be fair, I only read the first 1.5 paragraphs though.

The problem with V is that it insists upon itself.

I would agree with geefe, with the slight amendment that GTA gameplay has always been mediocre. Gunplay in particular has never been the series strong point.
As for characters in V, I probably haven't played enough to comment, but none really stood out as being hugely interesting. As geefe says, Trevor was probably the most interesting, but he was completely repugnant psycho that wasn't someone I had much interest in spending time with.

They're a bit of knock about fun. None of the plots have particularly grabbed me and I tend to nope out at some gratuitous torture scenes. Driving around taking in the sights is usually diverting.
Though since 3 they come out on PC so late most the buzz has gone and I just go "eh" then pick it up way later in a sale. Even if the tech is mindblowing it tends not to be a year later.

Madness. Rockstar are one of only a handful of companies to write meaningful dialogue and stories and to create interesting, rounded characters.

Red Dead 2 truly had some of the best characters I'd seen in a game in a while. That stuff near the end properly hit me hard.

Red Dead 2 has my favourite narrative and characters of any game, ever. It's peerless.
I quite like GTA but don't think any of them come close as a story-driven experience. I admire them in various ways but they aren't remotely emotionally engaging.

My first thought was genre, but I don't know if that's it: Westerns may traditionally have more emotional heft but there are a fair few Heist movies that engage the viewer emotionally. They could have done it, or attempted it more fully, if they'd wanted to. I guess they didn't prioritse that level of engagement, didn't feel it was important to their demographic. Even as it's got more serious, GTA has always remained more cartoonish and parodic than Red Dead (though no GTA has made me laugh as hard as the Lennie drinking scene in RDR2).

The hardest GTA ever made me laugh was GTA IV's radio ad for WING IT PRESENTATION SOFTWARE

But yeah I do agree that GTA does lend itself to a cartoonish vibe but I thought 4 was more serious in its tone but it wasn't received as well, especially as it wasn't as "fun" I guess even though I loved it and The Ballad of Gay Tony was great. 5 was very much a reaction to that criticism I guess as a result the characters were written the way they were.

I swear to God just thinking about that scene brings tears to my eyes. Such a brilliant interlude.

I swear to God just thinking about that scene brings tears to my eyes. Such a brilliant interlude. I played that bit two days ago as I'm currently replaying it after last playing it in 2018 so it feels quite fresh.

I'm going to have to go back to it.
All this talk of GTA makes me want to play Red Dead.

Aye, I'm tempted to start a fresh game of it soon. Drifted away somewhere in the middle of it shortly after launch and it's gotten pretty foggy in my memory, but all this talk of Lenny brought it straight back! Such a shame there isn't a 60fps option.

Speaking of 60fps some folk are really thinking GTA 6 will have a performance mode. I just don't see it. I could be wrong here but it seems unlikely.

Have a read of the notice on the upper half of the supermarket door, near the end of the trailer.😁

Now that they’ve completed another circuit round the three original cities, it would be amazing if they did new locations for future games. If indeed there are future games and I’m still alive when they happen.

Sleeping Dogs probably put an end to any chance of it happening but I always wanted them to do one with you playing an undercover cop.
Also SD is still a great game and should have had a sequel.
Definitely up for a new city after this. Accepted London well never get the 3D treatment.

Wasn't it leaked that they wanted to do a large part of America but scaled stuff back so they'll be adding more locations over time?

They should make Starfield, but with GTA!!! No, silly idea, too big. They should set it in some sort of futuristic neon city or something.

I'm a bit apprehensive of what Rockstar would do with their version of the Sphere if they revisited Las Venturas.
