My boiler has five different settings, 1 to 5 basically. The obvious thing to do is turn it down one which I would other than the fact the one it's on now (3) is also badged with the letter E which I assume stands for Economy. So to turn it down would be turning it off the economy setting. Might Google an instruction book and start paying more attention to this shit. I had a look this morning and the so-called Eco mode sets the flow temp to 75c for the radiators. Now it's set to 60c same as the tap water and the rooms took a little longer to warm up as expected so I guess I just trust it's saving a little money.

1 room - 3k. 2 rooms - 6k. Pretty much this. They wanted more money for doing more rooms. I assume 3 rooms would have been £9k. Ok, cool. I never take quotes like that very serious, I want to know material, labour etc as otherwise they also always end up noting something was more expensive than expected etc. For solid wall wall insulation it's basically just taking off and resizing base boards, redoing any sockets, and then putting on battens and insulation, and then plaster. "Per room" for a terraced house this is just one wall, and even then just the bits round the windows!!! I guess the coving could be expensive to replicate. I think I previously paid like £1500 for that.

Fucking energy bills have meant Octopus energy have stopped giving out free toy octopuses because ‘saving money’ and making sure people are warm is more important. I want my octopus. They're actually giving away electric blankets now. I'm sure that will help loads with the old bids bills. Anyone ever won £1.00 on their weighted spinny wheel shite?

Just turned the thermostat down to 19.5C. I can't be heating the house when it's just me in a room in the corner.

Get a delonghi bambino and put it under your desk. Ours has paid for itself thrice over in the last 10 years just to stick in one room you want to heat.

That too. It is super useful to have, though. The girl really feels the cold, so we put it in her room rather than heat the entire house and whatnot.

Used to have an oil radiator at uni, as one house didn't have central heating. Cracking bit of kit.

I'm sure I've read that electric heating is so much more expensive than gas that for the most part its better to have the central heating on rather than space heat one small spot using electricity.

Also as unless you have good internal insulation (who does?) you are effectively heating the whole house, due to heat loss to other rooms.

It's a good way to heat e.g. a home office rather than run the heating for the whole house. Because who can be arsed turning every thermostat on and off all the time. But, if you are one of those people, using gas to heat the small space would be cheaper.

I've got WiFi thermostatic valves on every radiator (except hall and bathroom tower rails), so I can just turn on a single or selected set of rooms. But I still think it might be overall more efficient to not do too much zoning. That's what heating design YouTube videos tell me anyway...

Just done a quick Google and possible options are: 1. Central Heating: ~£2.50 an hour 2. 500W oil filled radiator (e.g. a bambino): 17p an hour 3. 2KW oil filled radiator: 68p an hour 4. Heated throw: 10p for 7 hours 5. Hot Water bottle: £2 to top up twice a day for 3 months With gas prices at 10p per kWh, 25kw of gas every hour seems excessive?! That is also more than double the heat loss I think for my not very efficient property at -2 degrees C.

We're getting to the nitty gritty here but your CH will reach your thermostat temp quite quickly and will then be using nowhere near 29kWh. And it will have warmed your whole house while doing it.
Your electric heaters are on nearly constantly* and will use their max rated energy rating pretty much continuously as they only temporarily* heat a very small space.
I can see having an electric heater on if it is literally one person at home in one closed room but go beyond that even a little bit and I'd personally put the CH on. And turn off/down radiator valves in any rooms are typically empty (and what's the difference compared to an electric heater in a different room).
With several people in the house it's no question. Use CH and adjust the radiator valves so people who like their rooms warmer can have it warmer. If you turn down your CH thermostat "to save money" but then top up the heat in different rooms with electric heaters you're almost certainly doing it wrong IMO.
*both due to lack of interior insulation

You're all giving me technology envy. I don't have a smart meter or techno gadgets. Do I want them? I think so but I have no fucking clue where to start and Hive can get fucked with their awful ads.

Yeah I think average actual UK requirement is 6-8kw, again for the coldest days.

One short circuit caused by a black out and your charred corpse will be entombed and preserved in molten zorb, which I can only imagine will be like thick cling film. Should there be a nuclear war, the aliens picking over our charred planet will wonder wtaf we did when they find that!

Ah the joys of it all, my Direct Debit is going up by £77 but that doesn't take into account the £66 a month credit. So it's actually only going up by £11 for 6 months, then it's going back up....when the usage drops.
That's pretty damn convoluted.

I've just wrapped a bambino in bubble wrap, have I just invented infinite heat? As long as it has fuel and oxygen, there will be heat... I just noticed our smart meter had disconnected from the WiFi (tbh, it's not really that smart), so as I was fiddling with it anyway (it knew the password, it just didn't want to connect unless I handheld it back through there plodding setup) I checked the daily/weekly usage. Then I remembered that we're still on a fixed tariff from last year and I probably shouldn't mention anything in case I get lynched.
