It'll be fine, once our poorest 10 million have all got through to Pip Schofield on This Morning.

I'm always amazed how expensive the UK is for things that needn't be. Rent, childcare, public transport all fucking ridiculous. Living in the UK always felt like being squeezed for every penny every month. Our descent into a plasticene USA is accelerating by the day. I'm half-surprised some backbenchers aren't frothing about a 2nd amendment :/

Well, if you think about it, Brexit did kind of work. You no longer have all those polish unskilled workers, instead, you will soon be able to go to Poland yourself to do their jobs requiring unskilled labour.

As someone currently doing up an house it’s really depressing the lack of good foreign workers.
These days it’s mainly brits and you have the same worry as getting a taxi except it’s for multiple days hearing their shite out dated opinions and the work is inferior in most cases to boot.

The press always seem to claim Scandinavian countries are a lot more expensive, usually mentioning the price of alcohol. I think they usually overlook that a lot of that is taxes which are spent on infrastructure and services which make those cheaper and better. ( Not: not an expert in Scandinavia).
Having been to a lot of other countries as a tourist, I always notice things like transport are a lot cheaper and housing always seems a lot nicer.
In short Britain is shit and I wish I’d moved to Canada when I had the chance.

I think it's the press selling the myth that socialist high tax countries are all expensive to live in. However, when property and childcare are cheap (oh, and fee-less uni education) then that does free up quite a bit of money for beer. My tax on my pay is 31% or so. That's it. No council tax coming later. And beer is expensive in the pub but not prohibitively and at the Systembolaget (booze shop) it's comparable to the UK.

Are you saying you are a pleb that wants to use PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE? I have my own infrastructure, and obviously don't want to spend some of my money to make somebody else's infrastructure better. This is probably the reasoning behind the socialist fear? I have no idea, because I'm actually a pleb (parasite?) and happy to use public infrastructure that other people pay for. Well, I also pay for it, but other people pay a lot more.

I don't get the desire to live in a failing tatty shithole but have slightly more disposable income due to lower taxes.
Who wants to be rich in a country with shit infrastructure and social ills rather than slightly less rich in a country that properly invests in public services? Spoiler warning: Tories.

Incompetent governments that waste money on vanity projects and mismanage the delivery of so many things doesn’t help. I guess that idea might work for some things but certainly not things like roads, education, public transport, and then the socialised approach is far more efficient for things like waste collector, libraries, and health services. I also like Oxford commas.

To an extent I agree and middle England is pretty shielded but they still often have to use the NHS, schools, roads, rely on council services like bin collections. And even if I was pretty wealthy, I wouldn't like my children to grow up surrounded by societal poverty.

Tories do like that. Someone nearby to hate, belittle and blame, and a reason to get great big gates. 'We had to really, just look at them ...'

Morrisons own brand Fanta knock off is 99p. It was 85p last week, 50p this time last year and 35p pre-COVID.
I am outraged.

Be patient - once Truss has completed her bonfire of the regulations, they will be able to make it out of cheap stuff like rats teeth and powdered death, it'll be 3 for 50p before you know it.

I suppose if they sack off the sugar tax that’ll take it down a few pence.

There's also something I've frequently encountered which is this idea of "I don't want to be a benefits scrounger, I want to work for myself" which, in theory, means people want to support themselves as much as possible but actually means people are too ashamed/ proud/ uppity about having any sort of state support.
I am increasingly of the idea that they've been brainwashed into this by the likes of the Sun, Mail and those who want to bin off government support.

Its the cousin of the similar sneering mentality the billionaire class encourage that see's people deciding that anyone on benefits shouldnt have a mobile phone, tv, broadband or, indeed, fun.
You see it shot through our performative social care system. Anyone on benefits should be punished for being on them rather than, you know, helped.

E.On have dropped an email in, our monthly goes up from £395 to £400 from October. Better than expected, plus the £400 rebate/loan makes it good news. Although I logged in and the email was quite misleading, the bills are going up to £470, and the rebate/loan brings it down to £400 until March.
We’re £1250 in credit with the fuckers so looking forward to getting any interest added to the money we’ve lent them

Yeah, we got the same email and are similarly in credit.
It is a problem that seems to have taken care of itself, though. Our boiler just died, so no expensive water heating for us.

I only just started my account. Got the email but haven't logged in. Allegedly my bill goes down to about £140 a month. Mix that with the solar I've had put up and it should be more than manageable.
Just lots of blankets and layers this winter.
