At my folks today. My mum seems to be completely ignoring the world right now as she has declared she is going to get a log cabin built in the garden... 0_o There is certainly something to be said for making a lifestyle change that would remove dependency on energy companies/credit/mass production. A log cabin doesn't sound that appealing mid-winter but being shafted for every penny left right and centre isn't that fun either.

You'd be surprised how warm a log cabin can be, especially if it's small enough.

Well I don't know about you guys but I am thrilled about the next few months of life. Being 32 means I have had the fortune to spend my entire working life through financial crashes, recessions, austerity and now I've been lucky to experience several once in a lifetime events and to really put the cherry on top, a war between two countries which is now preparing to give me the no vaseline treatment. It's a situation where I just can't even care any more. We have a 4 month old girl so she was making things a bit harder regardless but now I'm having to wonder at what point do I burn her to keep warm or ship her off to a sweat shop so she can earn her keep. What a joyous time to be alive! That’s nothing, many here lived through the summer of ‘76!

The summer of ‘76 is the new Blitz. Soooo in 25 years the 2011 riots will be that as well? I'll be dead by the time they reference the winter 2022 guillotine marches

Solid persuasive argument from our soon to be cretin-in-chief as to why everyone is wrong to be annoyed with a corrupt price-fixed industry that no one can opt out of profiteering off the misery of people they don't care about. Well, my mind has been changed. Well done, you plucky industrious fellows, for fucking up the world for everyone.

I think Argentina's inflation rate has been over 40% consistently for like 8 years? They had a different horrible spike in 99/00 which brought down a government and I think just after the Falklands War it went up to 2000% or something nutty. Import Substitution Industrialisation left a lot of the Latin American economies in odd states.

Yeah, Argentina been a basket-case economy for a while now. They're one of those "emerging markets" that doesn't actually emerge, but just continuously sinks. Yet still, some how, soldiers on.

People on those horrid meters should be looked after first. You could change the tariffs on those instantly. And charge people who live in large homes / highest council tax bands pay more!
You know there are people with second homes who will have the heating on this winter when they're not there to stop damp and keep the pipes from freezing?! Are they a significant amount of the population, dunno, probably not, but the fact remains some people can afford to pay a lot more.
Looking forward we have to invest in nuclear and wean ourselves off gas!

I was wondering if you can charge by marginal usage, based on size of home.
lower rate = cheap, a reasonable amount to heat the size of house/flat. Mid rate = you're running the heating at 21C all year round or some shite. High rate = taking the piss.
Incentivise things like insulation because it means you're actually using energy at the lower rate.
Probably complicated by gas/electricity divide.

Love that Labour have announced there's so exactly this as one of their measures, and of course all the Corbynites have jumped on it. "OMG so boring. It's only £28 a month. What about everyone else!" I really despise them.

I really despise them. To be fair, it does kind of seem like that suggestion would result in the bad companies that profit from prepaid meters being “paid off” with government funds, rather than penalised for being shitty. That’s the take I saw from the usual lefties on Twitter and I think they have a point - wouldn’t it be better to just make it illegal to charge more for prepay? Sorry if this has already been covered in the UK Politics thread

Yeah, reimbursing the companies seemed an odd position to take. There has to be a reason for that though, other than not wanting to upset them. Regulation of the market is complex, so it's probably something to do with that.

I agree it's complex though I sometimes feel that's a useful and somewhat deliberate situation which excuses profiteering and utilities are governed/regulated (hah!) by different rules to other businesses.
If company X was making billions selling the greatest 3 in 1 fleshlight/phone/snack then I completely agree with a hands off approach but When it comes to essential utilities the Govt should simply say No actually you're not going to raise your prices, absorb the hit and if that's not to your liking we'll look after supplying the population with heat and energy to ensure people aren't dying. Pension funds aren't going to collapse, stakeholders won't instantly deliquesce into pools of ooze.
Paying companies already making billions seems like the worst of the options.

They have probably done better to announce a few things at the same time as well if it’s part of some bigger plan.

I don't know enough about how they're regulated tbh, other than they use the RAB model to incentivise investment. It's clear it ain't working at the moment given the massive profits but market reviews are often set in regulation to give certainty etc. Could always be amended with emergency legislation of course.

So I got a leaflet through the door the other day from from the gov and Improveeasy. They're offering free insulation and energy solutions for people in lower graded energy rated houses.
Which mine is.
So going through the stuff with the guy on the phone and he's saying that I could have a heat pump and solar panels, upgrade boiler etc. All for free.
Except you have to have at least 1 person in the household having some sort of benefit coming in. Like unemployment benefit, housing benefit etc etc. I don't have any of those so he said, ah well, sorry then, we can't do anything.
Great!
