I've reinvestigated solar and oh boy has the market change. In the last year it's been flooded with wankers. EG: I have told several my budget is £4,500 as I will be living solo and my usage is about 2,000kwh per year - based on when myself and partner lived together.
Quote A) after back and forth emails, finally gets down to £4,500 for four shitty panels (1.8kw) but only if I agree this week as it's a temp discount
Quote B) 7 panels, installed, £4,500 for 3.1kw.
Fun addendum - some of them wanted a deposit BEFORE doing a site visit. Quote B sent around an old bloke armed with only a compass and a tape measure. His first words were "tell me how much your max spend is and I'll make it work".

Don't take it personally It's just not the analyst's that news outlets normally use (Cornwall) It's still bullshit cause at that point we might as well just go back to burning witches. It's going to be very hard for huge chunks of the population to take that.

I don't take anything personally, I was literally just mentioning a news report... but that's still an awful lot of words to say "I'm wrong".

As much as I want to, I can't believe the "they won't let it get that bad" narrative. They totally will - they already have - because they simply don't give a fuck about the people most affected.

Yeah, when has mob rule ever gone wrong? Right, because letting a government do whatever it wants without a squeak of protest has never gone wrong? Very large line between “squeaks of protest” and … I am not above the idea of violence and physical intimidation as actual pressure tactics with these people. At the end of the day, you'd get shit done if you had 200 people surrounding your house and kids. … don’t you think?

That's £400 + a month...We can afford it if we have to. The other issue is that it will fuck the entire economy. Everything will take a nose dive. Our not as bad as the financial crisis recession could get as bad as the financial crisis.

There's already a bunch of pubs/restaurants/takeaways saying they're struggling to keep the lights on due to the gas and leccy costs, so surely when fuck all's open they might actually notice?

To be honest there's part of me who would love to see the economy actually crash irreversibly.
There are other, more sensible, parts of me that realises it would just screw over those at the bottom the most.
But still, part of me would love to see the economy absolutely crumble. Just crash to ground. The incessant worship of the economy above all else is a rod we've made for our backs. So fuck it.
(Again, I realise that's not a helpful or wise position, but can't deny it's there).

Part of me wonders if there's anything that can stop it. This is the second major financial crisis in 15 years and this time, it follows a global pandemic and a war which is causing food and fuel shortages, meaning that there are more than just financial worries for most people. I'm tempted to invest in a camel and a rifle for life in our new desert Britain.

Hold off on that investment We're not there yet, it's still relatively easy to muddle our into and out of a middling recession...however that requires a competent governme...ok where do I get the Camel and riffle?

All this talk of a post apocalyptic wasteland made my dumb brain remember the episode of Rugrats where they had a Mad Max style dream sequence.
That's probably the just helpful thing I can contribute. Thanks brain.

Our not as bad as the financial crisis recession could get as bad as the financial crisis. We finished paying our mortgage a few months ago, had hoped to save but that is looking less and less likely. We like yourself are in a privileged position (at least at moment) where we could find the extra*, but I do not feckin want to! and there will be a limit. Mine and missus mums and our siblings might not be in such a fortunate position. The most frightening thing is we are not even into winter yet, when historically a lot more gas will be used. *Our monthly dd has gone from £150 to £220 the last couple of months. We supply readings each month

(Again, I realise that's not a helpful or wise position, but can't deny it's there). It would be a fine course to take if there was enough responsibility and drive to fix the underlying issues after the crash. But the reality is that in the case of a crash the British public would suffer and the corporations and mega rich would still make a bank. The issue with this country is that people have been voting like morons for the last two decades, and whenever there is a possibility to make a change people always refuse it. The lib dems pushed for a voting reform to get rid of the first across the line system that causes the current two party politics. People voted against the alternative voting method in the referendum. Great. Then the lib dems were fucked by backing the Tory plan to increase tuition fees when they were minority party in a coalition, fair enough. But why then have a Tory only government for the next two sessions? Why not double down on your Lib Dem votes and get them to be a majority party so they don't have to compromise to get the most important bills across (like Tories were planning to get rid of the Human Rights act and Lib Dem blocked them, and they pushed for the green deal)? But no, let's fuck everything up out of spite. Corbyn of course was unelectable, for promising to actually tackle issues that affect the people. Because change is scary and let's just keep things as they are and if privatising energy companies was good for Thatcher then it's good for us. I think there's very simple solutions to the energy crisis: The changes in the building law are fine but they should also affect buildings retroactively. Government should then subsidise ground heat pumps, local microelectricity (basically just solar), develop a framework for moving people out of their energy hungry single family homes into a better class of council housing, and invest in new nuclear now (realistically should have happened 10 years ago already). But council estates are for criminals and druggies, and free market will solve all our problems right. Change is scary. Let's just have blackouts in the winter instead.

I'm in Sweden, was on a fixed rate for electricity for years and when I bought a house last year I thought I'd wait and just see how things landed on a variable rate... Big mistake. When prices had quadrupled i took a year at fixed. That will end in December. My bills are roughly now double what they were. I might be wrong but I don't think there's any contingency in place for the coming winter. Crazy that something so fundamental as warmth is allowed to be sold like this.

Well I don't know about you guys but I am thrilled about the next few months of life. Being 32 means I have had the fortune to spend my entire working life through financial crashes, recessions, austerity and now I've been lucky to experience several once in a lifetime events and to really put the cherry on top, a war between two countries which is now preparing to give me the no vaseline treatment.
It's a situation where I just can't even care any more. We have a 4 month old girl so she was making things a bit harder regardless but now I'm having to wonder at what point do I burn her to keep warm or ship her off to a sweat shop so she can earn her keep.
What a joyous time to be alive!
