Awesome and Jeddah are not words I would usually use together.
Unless the sentence was some like "Jeddah is very slightly more awesome than Riyadh", but it's not very likely.

Inflation hits 9%. And will get worse this winter. A lot of people are going to be very fucked indeed. Not sounding good I just was looking at why it's so low here in Switzerland (2.4%) and seemingly only 1% of electricity comes from oil/gas, it's mostly hydroelectric and nuclear. However, mostly buildings use oil or gas for heating so that doesn't make sense, it's clearly a lot more complicated.

Given my situation, I am fairly shielded from rising costs. I have savings, no kids and am not a big user.
I think if governments continue to not tax oil and make a move towards better renewables en masse, then that's your tipping point. People will just not pay their bills. Eventually, the money runs out. Then things really go to shit.

Sure hope energy firms are buying the cheap gas now with all that excess money so they can knock a few quid off in the winter.

The Tories sold off most our gas storage facilities so that's not happening.

I assumed it was tongue in cheek. As if we're getting cheaper bills any time soon!

Yeah, even when the wholesale price falls, the companies will never lower the tariffs.

Yeah, even when the wholesale price falls, the companies will never lower the tariffs. Well this is where competition SHOULD kick in.

Yeah, even when the wholesale price falls, the companies will never lower the tariffs. Well this is where competition SHOULD kick in. Well, everyone is still affected by the same wholesale prices... So, you'd think that maybe a sensible government who gives a shit might step in to offer some protection to the consumers and try to fend off a recession and spiralling costs and inflation... In France, the energy companies have been told to put in price caps and that they won't be allowed to make unrestrained profits, protecting the customers somewhat and preventing runaway inflation (well, hopefully). Here, though, our government has allowed the energy companies to make record profits whilst the consumers suffer and pay more. Inflation now at 9%, the highest in 40 years. Vote clown, get circus.

Yes. If you can afford the upfront costs now and would generate enough to make a difference.

What's everyone's electric bill like now then? Mine use to be "normal" and it's up for renewal with EON.
These are my options -
1) Stay on the variable rate and get shafted, and pay 3.6k a year. 2) "Upgrade" to their amazing fixed deal and pay....er.....4.2k a year 3) Look on uswitch to find the cheapest deal which is approximately 364 quid a month
That sound familiar to your situation?

A quick Google suggests that the average salary of 31K is 2 grand a month so electricity would be 20% of your take home and if you’re a low earner or unemployed then you’re beyond fucked.

First time I've ever had to look for a fixed rate electricity bill. Normally that's just for mortgages.
Joy.

Yup. Actual use at the moment is about £180 a month but paying £300 in an attempt to stave off the worst of winter when prices will rise by 50% again.

Yeah, I think I'll have to do the same to absorb the blow. Christ, this all really sucks doesn't it. Amazing progress we're making.

Galaxy brain: he now only has to consume X - thumb calories come the apocalypse. So... If we all hack off a limb or two, we'll need slightly less heat and can lower our energy bills! Plus, some extra meat. Now we're prepping!

Straw poll - should I pull the trigger on solar? You can't. Nobody has capacity to serve you. Big demand and no supply. Should have done it a year ago or two.

If you can get it get it, although prices might be extra inflated.
I have been waiting for my install since like October, keeps getting delayed for various issues. At least my price is still locked in and I now also get the VAT discount...

I'd also plan for the future. You might live alone at the moment and want things to stay that way, but things change. Go as big as you can now.
