When we got the power back on our central heating pump seems to have reset from 3 bars of power to 1. I left it there as the rads seemed to heat up ok, albeit more slowly - but apparently using like half the gas we were paying for previously according to the smart meter? Big Gas hates this 1 trick.

I wouldn't expect it to affect your gas usage? All the pump does is, well, pump hot water around. It's the thermostat that determines how often the boiler fires etc. In fact, surely the boiler should be firing more often, as the house is taking longer to heat up due to the slower speed the radiators are getting hot? I might have this wrong of course, I'm not a heating engineer I'd expect you to be getting a saving in electricity though! Has this occurred at the same time the weather's warmed up by any chance?

Apparently if the water returns to the boiler too hot it affects the condensing or some such, Google suggests you should set the pump to the slowest setting you can get away with to use the least gas. The other week we were at £10 by the time we got out of bed, we’re only at £16 for the day so far

It was almost £40 per day here at one point. Our monthly DD is £470 before the discount

Yeah we did this at the start of December. Worth mentioning this from the bottom of that page though. WARNING: many new build homes use 'microbore' pipework (instead of standard 15mm pipework you will have 10mm or even 8mm pipework) and it maybe too small to cope with lower flow temperatures. There are exceptions when it can work however.

It takes a bit of trial and error. I dropped mine to 55 but the room temp didn't get high enough to turn off the room thermostat so the boiler was on almost constantly. How well your home is insulated has a big bearing on how low you can go with it as the article says. 50 seems ok for the water temp though. The shower seems fine set at that.

Is anyone finding it really difficult to care about NYE and the pub industry? I hear that lots of pubs will close early and loads may go but, frankly, it's hard to give a shit right now.

I care about the pub industry because I like pubs and think they play an integral part of a community. But the issues are plentiful to try and fix it - energy prices, business rates, extortionate duty, pubco and ties as a starter. I wouldn't want to run a pub in this climate. The margins are so tight, that the only way to make money is to be a foody pub.
My local is being taken over in the new year after the previous licensees threw in the towel. They had a lot of shitty (literally - sewer flooded the place) luck, with Covid etc. But they also didn't respond properly post Covid. When others were throwing the doors open, they maintained a strict entry and exit policy, bookings only even when it was empty. The food was bang average and they charged top prices. The lighting and atmosphere was all wrong too. Guess we'll see what new people do.

I can see that but I also dislike some of the messaging that seems to imply it's my responsibility to keep pubs open. Same with the "eat out to help out" nonsense.

My last local pub that was an actual pub got bought out during covid, they’re all foodie places round here now. Nowhere to sit and drink comfortably, dining tables aren’t cosy

I went to my parents local village pub a couple of times this year. They acted surprised when we said we had just come in for a drink and said we'd have to sit at the (cramped) bar as every table was set aside for their overpriced food.

I always prefer drinking at the bar. Unless in a big group, I don't really like sitting at tables.

Ours pubs still seem to be doing OK, from the outside at least. Central London pubs seem to have been totally fucked by Covid though, which is largely lots of people working from home when they're mostly after work boozers and Westminster council being total douchebags about rates and late licenses. It's pretty hard to find one staying open past 11pm on a Friday in Soho these days.

I live in a town of about 5000 and there are 6 pubs here, with several others a short drive away. It seems a lot of pubs for a small number of people, and only two of them ever have a significant number of people in.
When lockdown ended they all tried hard with outdoor areas but they were all still quiet whenever I went past. They’re nice for the community but people seem a lot less interested in that these days.

Turns out the lower one is our old tariff and the higher is our new tariff but instead of increasing one to the other they just charged us the old amount and the full new amount as separate payments

My Mrs bought them for our dogs but wouldn't spend out on one for herself. I might grab her one then

That's reminded me that whoever installed the boiler in our last place left it on default pairing settings with the thermostat. Worked fine for a few years, but then a neighbour clearly got the same model installed. Our heating was completely ignoring the schedule and going on at all hours and absolutely did my head in for a few weeks!
